    All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

    Blessed be the holy Trinity, † one God, whose voice is upon the waters,

    whose mercy is poured out upon all people,

    whose goodness cascades over all creation.

    Amen.*

    Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness.

    Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

    We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters

    and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.

    Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people

    Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy

    Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and

    servants of all.

    We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in

    Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love.

    To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord

    in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

    Amen.

    The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

    and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

    And also with you.

    Let us pray.

    Holy God, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your

    Spirit, that we may follow your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

  • Mark 1:4-11 Kids can find the story on pages 242 of the Spark Story Bible.

    The holy gospel according to Mark.

    John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of

    sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to

    him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with

    camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed,

    “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the

    thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

    In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as

    he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove

    on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

    The gospel of the Lord.

  • I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

    I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

    and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

    He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at

    the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

    I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of

    sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

    Guided by Christ made known to the nations, let us offer our prayers for the church,

    the world, and all people in need.

    See page 7 for a list of prayer concerns.

    At the conclusion of each petition: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

    Merciful God, hear the prayers of your people, spoken or silent,

    for the sake of the one who dwells among us, your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior.

    Amen.

    “Lord, Be Glorified” ELW #744

  • ELW p. 220

    O God of justice and love, we give thanks to you that you illumine our way through life with the words of

    your Son. Give us the light we need, awaken us to the needs of others, and at the end bring all the world

    to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor

    and glory forever.

    Amen.

    Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

    Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth

    as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

    who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the

    kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

    God the creator strengthen you;

    Jesus the beloved fill you;

    and the Holy Spirit the comforter † keep you in peace.

    Amen.

    “Shine, Jesus, Shine” ELW #671

    Lord, the light of your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness shining; Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us, set us free by the truth you now bring us. Shine on me, shine on me.

    Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory;

    blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.

    Flow, river flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;

    send forth your Word, Lord and let there be light.

    As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory, mirrored here, may our lives tell your story. Shine on me, shine on me.

    Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory;

    blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.

    Flow, river flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;

    send forth your Word, Lord and let there be light.

    Go in peace. Be the light of Christ.

    Thanks be to God.
