Timetable Week B

History plays an important part in our learning. We can read about it, watch it on TV and hear about it on the radio, but we don’t always get the chance to touch it or interact with it. On Wednesday, Shane Blackman arrived from Sydney to teach our students about World War One through ‘Living History’.

Mr Blackman is a history professional and dedicates his career to educating young people on history that they can’t experience in person.

In his presentation, our students learnt about what life was like for Australian soldiers living in the trenches, fighting on the Western Front and the tactics used during the war.

Each class got to hear about real items and feel them as they were passed around. Many students reported that they thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Throughout the day, all students from 7-12 sat in on his presentation, interacting with various artefacts from World War One, including replica uniforms and tools, and even tasting an original morning tea that soldiers in the trench would get to eat!

The kids were thrilled to volunteer to pick out items to talk about, and in Callan’s case, get dressed up in the full uniform they would’ve worn at the time. The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about the war and develop an understanding of the ordeals the soldiers went through.

Year 7 Art students were set the task to create a creepy creature. The students had to make a sculpture using one found object. Students could also use other media like paint or collage.

During Terms 1 & 2 Year 7 learnt about the elements: texture, size, shape, colour and line.

Students have their artwork on display in the front office.

This week in Careers… Canberra Careers Expo

Nine students from Years 10-12 attended the Expo on 8 August. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore all career options and post school study with over 120 stalls to visit. It is always a positive experience for our students and I would encourage all students to attend the Expo at least once over the following years. Thank you Mr Challman for his excellent transportation in very windy and wild conditions.

University of Wollongong (UOW) Early Entry and Scholarships Session

As part of our Learning Partnership with UOW, we were lucky to have Sam Aviata, Campus Manager at UOW Bega Campus, come to school to work with five Year 12 students in completing their Early Entry Applications. Sam mentored the students through the application process as well as giving the students interview tips and the required information to apply for the many scholarships offered at UOW.

We value our partnership with UOW and would like to thank Sam very much for taking the time to work with our students. The UOW Early Entry Program enables students wanting to go to UOW to apply, attend an interview and if successful are informed of their acceptance prior to sitting the HSC Examinations which relieves a great amount of stress.

UC Aspire Sessions

The UC Aspire Team presented sessions to our Year 10 and 11 students. The workshops looked at goal setting and the post-school options available to all students, as well as time management and problem solving skills. We value our learning partnership with UC and thank the Aspire Team for working closely with our students.

On Tuesday 13 August representatives from Snowy Hydro came to introduce their traineeship program for 2020 and beyond to our Year 10-12 students. There are a number of traineeships available across a variety of areas, which is particularly exciting as the company moves towards Snowy Hydro 2.0. The application period has been extended.

Year 11 Subject Selection Evening

Year 10 students and parents attended a stage 6 subject selection information evening on Tuesday 13 August. Students and parents were provided with information about the broad range of courses available to them in Year 11 and 12, and the room was buzzing with questions after the presentation.

Individual interviews with parents and students will commence next week to assist students with their choices.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions around subject selection.
