I couldnt be doing this without the supporto a number o people, and at the risk oorgetting someone I wont try to name themall, but the daily operation comes rom mebut with massive support rom Dazem with theweb/IT shit!!! Designs and additional nerdystu has come rom Herbs, Bien and CodyFinney.

BSCI: In Canada, its not always easy toget our own artists and businesses o theground, especially when looking at the artworld, because so many people would rathersupport the American or other oreign bodies.Despite being its own sub-culture, I nd thatCanada has a tendency to be slow when itcomes to supporting its own. For example:Banksy and Revok can get more love inCanada than EGR or Elicser. How supportivehave Canadians -both individual and marketwise- been to the Block By Block brand? How

important is it or Canadians to get behindtheir own kind?

Its o the utmost importance that we asCanadians throw our support behind our localartists and brands! Were the second largestcountry in the world with the populist o theState o Caliornia spread over its huge landmass. At times, it can be dicult here BUT thesupport Block has received is HUMBLING on allronts! We appreciate it.

BSCI: Beore we start talking about thebusiness aspect o your company andbuilding process I want to ask you, whoare the individuals that make up BLOCK BYBLOCK? How did this entire movement cometo being?

We can start with me: my name is Sizeo and Iam the creator o Block By Block ink. Im bornand raised in Toronto and have been involvedin grati since 96.

As ar as building the brand goes, it has beena two year process; set o rom the inuencerom some riends o mine, but keeping it aslocal and homegrown as possible seemedonly right as there was no real Canadianbrand. It seemed like the right time to comeout with a high quality product(s) that couldbe sold at a reasonable price or EVERYONEinvolved - rom the people buying it to thedudes selling it. I got tired o seeing kids splittheir lunch money three ways to buy a pen

only to nd out that these [expensive pens]sucked and the guy who sold them couldbarely make a prot due to the high price.

Afer some serious research everything wasset to go and the name BLOCK BY BLOCK justseemed rightits how you see the best a cityhas to oerby getting out there and walkingit BLOCK BY BLOCK, its how you build a solidoundation, and Im not just talking abouthousescould be your rep, career or brand, it

Grati has given me an amazing networko riends, which Ive used to promote theproduct and to reach out to shop ownersthrough riends o riends etc. Using my owngrati career wouldnt get me that ar.Imnot a talented artist, just a dude thats honestabout what Im doing and willing to work hardor it.

BSCI: What kind o satisaction do you get romknowing there are people using your ink toexpress their ideas? I imagine that would bean intense eeling.

Vandalism acilitation has been the mostsatisying and stressul project I have been apart o. But while going out and walking theblocks and I can point out whos using BLOCKand it drives me to walk that extra ve blocks.That motivates me to stay up all night and getthe boxes packed or the next day. Seeing

those drippy tags make all the hard workworth it.

BSCI: BBB (Block By Block) seems to embody atrue hustlers ideology o hard work and blue-collar eort paying o in the end. We all knowthe amount o work one puts into a task willreect on its outcome-whether it be grati orbusiness, the eort is essential. I want to knowmore about the eort; the work that goes notonly into establishing your brand but also

establishing yoursel as a writer. What goes on

BSCI: How important is word o mouth(advertising) concerning your product? I askbecause unlike many American or Europeanbrands, BBB is not using slick-product ads orbuying spots on websites. So how would youdene your marketing strategy?

Word o mouth is so important as to whatsgoing on with Block; everyone wants to bethe one to put the next dude on to someshitwere all guilty o it But using some slickpromo ads would be sweet. I the moneywas there maybe there would be some highbudget block AD..but that wouldnt beBLOCK, hard work rom the network o riends

that have been accumulated throughout theyears o painting grati and social mediahave been kind to us! Our strategy is to be outthere and to be honest. I Block wasnt aroundprowling streets would still go on in my dailylie!

Block as a reality is ucked (hectic). Its notmy ull time job so afer being a productivemember o society I spend a ew hours eachday- in the grind- lling bottles, completingorders and doing whatever I have to do in theoce. Some days it takes three hours, othersits over 16. To be honest, I dont always noticethe time because this is like painting to me;its un and seems natural to work hard atsomething.

The hardest part o branding Block has beendocumenting all it. Its hard or me to stop anddocument things and be like, LOOK! LOOK!THIS IS US!

I eel nothing is cornier then seeing somedouche writer be just that, a douche writer. Sohonesty has been the main ormat or not onlymy grati but or my brand, its really easy tobe yoursel..it has awarded me some greatthings and limited a lot , as I will always speakmy mind and do what seems right.

ATM were the realest crews in my hood. I usedto pass by TSN wall and see burners and piecesby these guys(mostly BBC) when i was youngand barely able make out the letters.

Back in the day shit was more real, Now thescene in the west island has changed, Grati isall toys. 95% o these kids dont even understandwhat it is all about.

SMAK: My dad used to tutor legal and sawhim drawing throw-ups and asked him i hewrote. Legal said yeah and then my dad said:

This summer the city went buckand bued all the highways even throughout
