Coupon tips for deal-seekersCoupons can help people, and parents

in particular, save substantial amounts ofmoney. While television shows have docu-mented the efforts of people who takecoupon usage to the extreme, many shop-pers simply want to earn modest savingson their grocery bills, recognizing that sav-ing a few dollars here or there can add upto significant savings over time.

But even if you have no desire to spendhours on end hunting down the best deals, there are some ways to make the best useof coupons without taking up much ofyour time.

•Understand stores' coupon policies.Begin by researching if stores you frequenthave restrictions on coupon usage. Somestores will double the value of couponsand others will not. Stores may set limitson the number of coupons one register canprocess or how many coupons a particularshopper can use at one time. It may bepossible to use two different coupons forthe same item, provided one is a manufac-turer's coupon and the other is store-based.

•Get organized. Using coupons effec-tively requires some organization. Developa system for categorizing coupons by typeor expiration date, which should ensureyou don't miss out on discounts becauseyou lost coupons of they have expired.

•Subscribe to several newspapers andcoupon websites. Newspapers and storecirculars are still great resources forcoupons, so subscribe to your local news-paper, which likely still includes insertsadvertising the latest sales and coupons. You also can subscribe to coupon web-sites, many of which are free and delivercoupons to subscribers' email inboxes on adaily or weekly basis.

•Consider a coupon-clipping service. Acoupon service will clip coupons for youand send them to you for a fee. Thisenables you to collect coupons from vari-ous regions where coupon values may behigher than where you live.

•Join a store loyalty program. Thosecards supermarkets and other stores scan at

checkout do more than just track your pur-chases. They typically entitle members todiscounts that other shoppers are not privyto. These discounts come off the bill auto-matically, saving you time and money.Furthermore, being part of a store loyaltyprogram may entitle you to emails or otheradvertisements on special sales not open tothe general public.

•Learn how to stack coupons with storesales. Many blogs tell you which stores arerunning sales and how they compare tocoupons in recent newspapers and circu-lars. This enables you to not only get thesale price on a particular item but also earnthe coupon discount.

•Get to know the standard prices ofproducts. The only way to know if acoupon is a good deal is to be familiarwith the going rate of the products youbuy on a regular basis. When visiting thegrocery store, make a note of how muchyour favorite items cost at full price.

•Be prepared to stock up. Some of thebest deals to be had involve buy one getone free, deals which are often referred toas "BOGO" or "B1G1." When such dealscan be combined with a coupon, the sav-ings are substantial.

•Don't forget about paperless coupons.Paperless coupons, or ecoupons, are oftenlinked to store loyalty programs. Manyecoupon services require shoppers to signup online and provide some basic informa-tion about themselves. When you go tocheck out at the store, you will swipe yourcustomer card and any available ecouponswill automatically be deducted from yourpurchase.

•Try competitors' coupons, too. Somestores will honor coupons from their com-petition. If one supermarket is offering aparticular BOGO deal, clip the coupon andbring it to your local store to see if theywill match the discount.

Although many people will not go toextremes when using coupons, when usedwisely, such discounts can help save agood deal of money.

Fun facts about America's national anthem July 4, 2014 marks the 238th anniversary of the signing of

the Declaration of Independence. Fireworks will illuminate thenight sky, the rich smell of barbecue will be in the air, and thecountry will be awash in red, white and blue splendor. Chancesare the swelling melody of "The Star Spangled Banner" will bebroadcast over the radio and on various firework display tele-casts.

The national anthem is synonymous with the United StatesAmerica, and its notes very well may be the patriotic glue thatbinds the country together. Although the lyrics and music of thesong are widely known, many may be unfamiliar with the richhistory behind the beloved tune.

A poem is bornAmerica began its fight for independence from Great Britain

in 1775, and the Declaration of Independence was signed in1776 to identify the 13 colonies that succeeded in winning theirindependence from Britain. However, the battles with Britainstretched on. Fights over territories kept disputes between theBritish Empire and the newly formed United States raging on,and it was during one such fight, and not during theRevolutionary War as some may think, that "The Star SpangledBanner" was written.

The War of 1812 was declared by the United States to setright some of the issues that were not resolved after theRevolutionary War. Francis Scott Key was an American lawyerat the time of this war, negotiating for the release of anAmerican hostage being held by the British. Although Key wonthe hostage's release, he was not able to leave the British fleetwhere the negotiations took place until the British completedtheir attack on Baltimore. Key witnessed the British fiery bombson Ft. McHenry at Chesapeake Bay. Just before dawn on themorning of September 14, 1814, Key was said to have noticed ahuge American flag still waving above Ft. McHenry in defianceto the British attack. This imagery helped inspire the words of apoem that eventually would become the national anthem.

Key penned the poem on the back of a letter he held in hispocket. After the battle was over and Key was released, he com-pleted the poem at the Indian Queen Hotel, where he was stay-ing. The poem was titled, "Defense of Fort M'Henry." The poemwas put to music to fit the popular melody "The AnacreonicSong" by English composer John Stafford Smith. Key's brother-in-law, Judge Joseph H. Nicholson, anonymously made the firstprinting of the lyrics to the melody, and the song was printed intwo newspapers. The song quickly became popular, and soonafter, Thomas Carr of the Carr Music Store in Baltimore,Maryland published the words and music under a new title,"The Star-Spangled Banner."

"The Star-Spangled Banner" takes off"The Star-Spangled Banner" became one of the nation's most

beloved patriotic songs in the 19th century. According toSmithsonian, the song gained special significance during theCivil War, a time when many Americans turned to music toexpress their feelings for the flag and the ideals and values itrepresented. The military used the song for ceremonial purposes, requiring it be played at the raising and lowering of the colors. But many versions of the song were used during these cere-monies and celebrations.

By the 20th century, President Woodrow Wilson wanted toestablish a standard version, so he tasked the United StatesBureau of Education to provide an official version. In response, the Bureau of Education enlisted the help of five musicians, including Walter Damrosch, Will Earhart, Arnold J. Gantvoort,Oscar Sonneck and John Philip Sousa, to agree on an arrange-ment. This new standardized version was first played onDecember 5, 1917, at Carnegie Hall.

It wasn't until March 3, 1931, that "The Star-SpangledBanner" became the official national anthem of the UnitedStates when President Herbert Hoover signed this designationinto law.

This Fourth of July, people may be struck by the magnifi-cence of the fireworks or the enjoyment of the parades. But asthe music swells, they also can think about the significance ofthe events that inspired the creation of the country's nationalanthem.

July 4, a holiday since 1941The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941.

Though that may seem like a long time for the country to waitto celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the traditionof the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day,dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and theadoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn ofAmerican independence, and celebrations that included fire-works and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. OnJuly 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become thefirst capital of the United States of America, held the first annualcommemoration of American independence, and exactly oneyear later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers beoffered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th anofficial state holiday, and the day was actually declared a feder-alholiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declara-tion did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That ben-efit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized asthe first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federalholiday.

Strange, but trueBy Samantha Weaver

It was Martin Luther King Jr. who

made the following sage observation: "In

the end, we will remember not the words

of our enemies, but the silence of our

friends."

If you head up to the top floor of the

U.S. Supreme Court building, you'll find a

basketball court. It's known, of course, as

"the highest court in the land."

During the filming of the classic film

"The Wizard of Oz," the dog that played

Toto was paid $125 per week. In contrast,

the actors who played the munchkins were

paid $100 per week -- and their manager,

Leo Singer, kept half of that.

If you're suffering from xanthodontia,

don't worry; a dentist can help whiten

those yellow teeth.

Moments in timeBy The History Channel

On July 9, 1777, New York elects Brig.

Gen. George Clinton as the first governor

of the independent state of New York.

Clinton's career was marked by his hatred

of British loyalists, called Tories. He kept

the public's tax burden low by confiscating

and selling land belonging to Tories to

maintain state coffers.

On July 7, 1865, Mary Surratt is exe-

cuted for her role as a conspirator in

Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Surratt's

boardinghouse, a few blocks from Ford's

Theatre, where Lincoln was murdered,

served as the place where a group of

Confederate supporters conspired to assas-

sinate the president.

On July 8, 1898, notorious con man

"Soapy" Smith is murdered in Skagway,

Alaska. Smith earned his nickname

"Soapy" selling bars of soap wrapped in

blue tissue paper. He promised crowds that

a few lucky purchasers would find a $100

bill wrapped inside the $5 bars of soap.

On July 13, 1951, rivers across eastern

Kansas crest well above flood stage, and

500,000 people are left homeless. Two

million acres of farmlands were lost. In

addition, the flooding caused fires and

explosions in refinery oil tanks.

On July 12, 1984, Walter Mondale,

Democratic presidential candidate,

announces that he has chosen Geraldine

Ferraro as his running mate, the first

woman nominated by a major party for the

vice presidency.

“A TIMBERLINE HOMES OF LA Company, LLC”

MODULARCONSTRUCTION

MATTERS!Come See Why!

Home projects perfectfor the 'staycationers'

The "staycation" was a concept many

first acquainted themselves with when the

economy started to struggle and men and

women were forced to tighten their belts.

In lieu of trips overseas or family trips to

popular tourist destinations, many men

and women opted to stay home and save

their money.

While the idea of a staycation makes

practical sense, many found that idling

away a week of hard-earned vacation at

home could grow somewhat boring after

a few days. But whether a staycation is a

week-long escape from the office or a

three-day weekend, homeowners can

tackle a few projects around the house to

turn their time at home into one marked

by productivity instead of boredom.

Add a splash of color. One of the eas-

iest and most effective ways to give a

home a new look is to repaint the home's

interior. Such a project can be a small-

scale undertaking focusing on one or two

rooms in the house or a more ambitious

exercise in which more lived-in rooms

like a family room and/or kitchen are

given an entirely new color scheme.

When removing old paint, consider using

sanding pads to make the task easier than

the days or yore, when paint was often

tediously scraped off of walls with a putty

knife. Parents on staycation can even

involve the whole family in their painting

project, allowing youngsters to choose

new colors for their rooms and do a little

work with the paintbrush as well.

Say farewell to old faucets. Faucets

have a unique way of making bathrooms

appear dated. But vanity faucets can

quickly and easily be replaced so long as

the main problem is appearance and not

plumbing. Homeowners who suspect

potential plumbing problems with sinks

should seek a consultation with a profes-

sional before replacing vanity faucets.

Once the go-ahead has been granted,

homeowners can spend a weekend or a

day or two during their staycation replac-

ing vanity faucets around the home.

Though the project might seem small, it

can yield dramatic and aesthetically

appealing results.

Consider some eco-friendly updates.

Homeowners who live in older homes

might be able to turn their time away

from the office into an exercise in going

green around their homes. Eco-friendly

updates, which can include replacing old

air conditioners with newer, more effi-

cient models or replacing older toilets

with more newer models designed to con-

serve water, may even earn homeowners

tax breaks and will almost certainly lead

to lower utility bills. Additional eco-

friendly and easy home improvement

projects that can be tackled in a day or

two include replacing inefficient and

wasteful water fixtures and installing a

programmable thermostat that makes it

easier to control heating and cooling costs

and conserve energy.

Stain the garage floor. Many home-

owners treat their garages as a workspace,

and as a result garages tend to be ignored

when making cosmetic changes. Staining

the garage floor can clear away any oil

spots and paint stains that may have accu-

mulated over the years, and a clean and

well-maintained garage can increase a

home's resale value.

Staycations have grown increasingly

popular over the last half decade, as many

homeowners are opting to forgo costly

vacations in favor of staying home to pad

their nest eggs. While it's important for

staycationers to squeeze in some rest and

relaxation, it also can be beneficial to

tackle a few projects around the house

during time away from the office.

Try this handy tipThe best way to get a bloodstain out of

clothing is by dousing the stain with

hydrogen peroxide and washing as usual.

For clay stains, you absolutely must have

a Fels-Naptha bar. It looks like a bar of

soap, and you wet the material and rub in

the soap. It's magical.

By Angela Shelf MedearisI was watching a morning news show

and saw a fascinating interview withBaseball Hall of Fame pitcher and cattlerancher Nolan Ryan about his new cook-book, "The Nolan Ryan Beef andBarbecue Cookbook: Recipes From aTexas Kitchen." Footage of Ryan withhis family on one of his cattle ranchesprovided a different perspective of a manthat many people know only from hislegendary baseball career.

Ryan has loved raising cattle since hewas a child. He first got into the cattlebusiness in a roundabout way. He startedvisiting ranches in South Texas becausehe was interested in deer hunting. Heended up spending a lot of time drivingaround looking at the cattle in the pas-tures and decided to go into the cattlebusiness. Now, Ryan provides his tenderNolan Ryan All-Natural Beef to Krogerstores, suppliers and restaurants aroundthe country.

"I have high standards when it comesto steaks!" Ryan says. "After years oftrying to find a consistent steak, I finallydecided the only way I could guaranteebeef that's good every time was to startmy own brand. I gathered several ranch-ing friends and enlisted some of the topmeat scientists and beef marketing peo-ple in the world. Together, we developeda program to provide guaranteed tender,all-natural beef that would always be ten-der, tasty and a great value for families."

I've never cooked with beef productsthat were even close to the quality ofRyan's All-Natural Beef. While there aremany definitions of "all-natural," his beefgoes beyond even the U.S. Departmentof Agriculture's definition of "minimallyprocessed with no additives or preserva-tives." The company uses the mostwholesome ingredients from cattle raisedin a stress-free environment. The sciencesays that happy cattle produce a greatproduct. It turns out that stress is the sin-

gle biggest cause of tough steaks. Ryanand the other cattle owners who providebeef for his company treat their animalsin a humane way that ensures a safe, pure and healthy product.

To develop the cookbook, Ryan andhis team worked with Cristobal Vazquez- executive chef at Rangers Ballpark inArlington, Texas, and Nolan's personalchef - to produce a practical and inspir-ing recipe collection that will allow youto prepare delicious beef.

One of my favorite recipes in Ryan'scookbook is the Easy T-Bone with Soyand Pineapple Marinade. It's the perfectrecipe for a holiday celebration or a casu-al family dinner.

Easy T-Bone with Soy andPineapple Marinade

This recipe for marinated and grilledT-Bone steaks was a winner with myfamily! It showcased the full flavors andtenderness of Ryan's beef perfectly!

Staging yourhome for afaster saleBy David Uffington

If you're ready to sell your home, youhave lots of competition. Staging can go along way toward making your home standout, resulting in a faster sale at the priceyou want.

Before you put your home on the mar-ket, ask your real-estate agent for sugges-tions. Your agent can advise you aboutlocal trends and preferences -- and yourcompetition. Incorporate as many of theagent's suggestions as you can.

Give serious consideration to hiring aprofessional stager, despite the cost.According to a study by the Real EstateStaging Association, homes that werestaged before being put up for sale spent87 percent less time on the market.Unstaged homes stayed on the market anaverage 166 days. After staging, thosehomes received offers within an average32 days. Homes that were staged beforebeing marketed received their first offerwithin 26 days. Quicker sales were trueacross all price ranges.

Even if you can't hire a professionalstager, there are still quite a few things youcan do yourself. Here are some sugges-tions from HGTV.com:

•Declutter. Professional stagers willoften remove as much as half of the furni-ture in a home to make it look bigger. Payspecial attention to crammed closets.

•If you have a junk room, give it a roleas a specific space, such as a reading nookor yoga area.

•Add lighting. You want 100 watts foreach 50 square feet, using a variety oftypes of lighting.

•Paint adjacent rooms, such as diningand living rooms, the same neutral color toadd more visual space.

Other staging websites suggest:•Take down anything personal on the

walls, such as family photos and religiousitems.

•Don't make potential purchasers won-der how much it will cost to change allyour personalized wall colors or carpet.

•Make the outside inviting. Mow, edge, sweep, rake and add mulch to make itmore likely a potential purchaser will wantto see inside.

•To find a professional stager, start withwww.realestatestagingassociation.com. Todo your own staging, search online forideas at HGTV's Front Door (www.front-door.com) and HGTV (hgtv.com), as wellas Bankrate.com and Realtor.com. Visitnew model homes to see how they're done.

Your payoff for staging your home? Afaster sale means not making those extramortgage payments while your house lan-guishes unsold.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot per-sonally answer reader questions, but will incor-porate them into his column whenever possible.Send email to [email protected].

Fireworks have acolorful history

Independence Day celebrations aremarked by many spectacles. But few cangarner the "oohs and aahs" of a good fire-works display. Summer is a time of yearwhen the resonating booms and brightspills of color that dot the night sky arequite common.

Fireworks, which can be traced backthousands of years, have an interesting his-tory. Many historians believe fireworksoriginated in ancient China as early as 200B.C. It is thought that early fireworks werenot the gunpowder-filled explosives oftoday, but something made from bamboo,a material native to China. Chunks ofbamboo, a thick, fast-growing grass, mayhave been tossed onto a fire as fuel. Therods would blacken, but eventuallyexplode in the fire, causing a loud, fright-ening noise. This noise was a result oftrapped air and sap inside of the bamboorods heating and expanding until the bam-boo exploded under the pressure. Theexploding bamboo was used to ward offanimals, other people and evil spirits.

Chinese alchemists eventually stumbledon a recipe for basic gunpowder, mixingtogether saltpeter (potassium nitrate, then acommon kitchen seasoning), charcoal, sul-fur, and other ingredients. This powderwas packed inside of hollow bamboo rodsto produce an even bigger bang. Soonpaper tubes replaced the bamboo, and fire-works were used for more than just scaringaway spirits, as they were routinely includ-ed in special celebrations and evendeployed during military engagements.

Fireworks may have begun in China, but they were soon being used around theworld. Italians had been fascinated withfireworks ever since the explorer MarcoPolo brought back firecrackers from Asiain 1292. During the Renaissance inEurope, the Italians began to develop fire-works into a true art form. Since this was aperiod of artistic creativity and expression, many new fireworks were created.

"Firemasters" were fireworks experts inmedieval England. They worked with"green men," who wore caps of leaves toprotect themselves from raining sparksfrom the fireworks.

In 1758, the Jesuit missionary PierreNicolas le Cheron d'Incarville, living inBeijing, wrote to the Paris Academy ofSciences about the methods and composi-tion of fireworks, including how to makemany types of Chinese fireworks.

The world remains fascinated by fire-works even now. Fireworks displays havegrown more elaborate over the years, requiring the skills of pyrotechnic experts, carpenters and digital sound masters.Various powders and chemicals mixedtogether produce a rainbow display of col-ors and aerial tricks that would likely haveshocked the earliest firework creators.

Not forgetting its origins, China contin-ues to produce and export more fireworksthan any other country in the world. Safetyexperts recommend the public leave fire-works to the professionals and sit back andrelax during awe-inspiring pyrotechnic dis-plays. As the United States and Canadaprepare for their respective IndependenceDay celebrations, flashy fireworks displaysare bound to be part of the festivities.
