By the time this issue goes to press, the move into the new Klein High School – Phase I will have been completed for several months. Students and teachers are now enjoying larger, more sophisticated science labs, modernized culinary arts facilities and cosmetology labs, as well as many other amenities found in a high school constructed for a quality education. Phase I includes the academic wing and athletic facilities. The academic wing includes the administration offices, classrooms for the core subject areas and library. The new athletic facility contains competition and auxiliary gymnasiums, natatorium, weight rooms, dance floors, Career and Technology Education spaces for agri-science, cosmetology, auto mechanics and much more.

The completed construction represents about two-thirds of the total building area that is planned for the high school. In February 2013, demolition crews razed the old Career Center, gymnasium

and pavilion to prepare the site for Phase II which includes the cafeteria, auditorium and fine arts facilities. Phase II construction is scheduled for completion in August 2014. The final demolition of remaining buildings and finished site work is set for completion in November 2014.

Update on Bond Projects

Grace England Early Childhood & Pre-Kindergarten Center

The first early childhood pre-kindergarten center in the district, Grace England, opened with approximately 500 students. This school serving seven elementary schools south of FM1960,

was critical in providing relief to those overcrowded schools. The students attending Grace England vacated classrooms in the elementary schools that can now be used to absorb projected growth in the area or eliminate temporary buildings. More important is the quality instruction that can take place in a school specifically designed for this type of student.

Zwink and Grace England were both constructed following the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) design criteria. By doing so, the district is assured of having schools that are energy efficient and provide the best architectural features to facilitate the educational process. Some of the features of a CHPS designed school include learning gardens, rainwater and condensate harvesting for irrigation, cool roof, maximum use of natural light (daylighting) and low-flow plumbing fixtures.

much excitement and enthusiasm by students, teachers and parents alike. Students were intrigued with the educational touch-screen display that shows energy consumption for the school and explains how the various systems work; teachers were excited about the innovative classroom design with multiple teaching walls and sound reinforcement system to ensure that all students in the class hear well no matter where they are sitting; and parents were impressed with the volunteer work areas, parent-teacher organization meeting room and the general overall feel of the school.

Klein ISD Student Services CenterThe Klein Student Services Center is located in the southern half of the Kleinwood retail center at Louetta and Kleinwood. The district purchased this building, and the adjacent 2.3 acre tract, to accommodate future expansion of Kleb Intermediate and office space needed for testing and accountability departments. By using this 14,000 square foot facility in this manner, the district can defer renovation and expansion of the Klein Instructional Center and renovate the central office to make better use of the space available in that facility for other administrative support functions.

Klein ISD Multipurpose CenterThe Klein Multipurpose Center, located on FM2920 near Krimmel Intermediate, was constructed to provide large meeting rooms for staff development, state of the art agriculture facility,

departmental offices and warehouse capacities for the food services and plant operations departments. Meeting rooms

resemble accommodations found in premier hotel conference centers with the latest in audio-visual technology and the flexibility to host a small training session for 10 or a large banquet for 600. The Klein FFA show is now held annually in the new barn and auction arena built to accommodate the growing interest in the FFA program.

Bernshausen ElementaryBernshausen Elementary is located on Mahaffey Road near Huffsmith-Kohrville and FM2920. The school opened its doors for the 2013-14 school year and is the fifth and final version of the Benignus

prototype. Like Blackshear and Zwink before it, Bernshausen will follow CHPS design criteria and will ultimately be one of the most energy efficient schools in the district.
