facilitate marrow/stem cell matches from local donors to treat patients suffering from blood-related diseases like leukemia and lymphoma. Since its creation in 1989 CMDP has successfully added more than 75,000 potential marrow donors to the Be The Match Registry® and facilitated nearly 450 marrow, stem cell and cord blood transplants throughout the world.

Our fundraising arm, Bonfils Blood Center Foundation, hosts several events each year to raise awareness and funds to support CMDP’s efforts as well as the other funding priorities such as research, blood supply and patient safety and community and donor outreach.

Bonfils prides itself on creating positive experiences for community members who generously support us, maintaining the highest quality standards to optimize patient care and advancing Colorado’s healthcare system by anticipating and expertly responding to our healthcare partners’ transfusion medicine needs.

Our shared successes would not be possible without our blood and marrow donors, financial contributors, hospital partners and volunteer advocates who enable us to impart hope, health and the gift of life upon our community.

Sincerely,

Thomas C. Puckett President and CEO Bonfils Blood Center

Thanks to your partnership, Bonfils met the needs of our nearly 200 hospital and healthcare partners by collecting nearly 165,000 blood donations in 2009. These donations were given at our seven community donor centers and at the 3,000 blood drives hosted by more than 1,100 businesses, civic groups and faith-based organizations throughout the year.

In order to be continually prepared to meet the needs of patients in our state and beyond, we are dedicated to maintaining steadfast relationships with our existing blood donors and cultivating partnerships with new donor groups. Illustrating the constant need for community support, Governor Ritter signed legislation in March 2009 that lowered Colorado’s blood donor eligibility age from 17 to 16 with parental consent – a move that will increase the number of first-time donors each year. While many just began their blood donation habit, five lifelong donors reached the 50-gallon donation milestone in 2009. The collective donations of these high-gallon donors helped save and enhance the lives of as many as 6,000 patients throughout their donation careers.

Yet it takes more than blood to save a life. Bonfils also administers the Colorado Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) which exists to recruit new potential marrow/stem cell donors to the national registry and to

PLEplasma or red cells and are essential to allowing

Bonfils to more precisely tailor the community blood supply to meet patients’ needs.

Regular blood donors are the foundation of our organization. They help us maintain a stable and adequate supply of blood for the community. It’s also important, however, to recruit new donors to support our blood supply needs. Over the past 12 years, our partnership with the Denver Broncos on the state’s largest single-day blood drive, Drive for Life, was the primary venue and event to uncover the largest group of first-time donors. Year after year, Drive for Life welcomes hundreds of new donors into the Bonfils family.

Medical professionals, firefighters and law enforcement save lives every day. The gift of life also begins with a donor. Of the more than 3 million eligible Coloradans, nearly 81,000 made the choice to help save lives through blood donation with Bonfils Blood Center in 2009. Some gave blood for the first time while others reached multi-gallon milestones. Individually, our donors contributed a combined 165,000 blood donations for the benefit of the community and patients in need. These donations are the first step in blood’s journey from donor to patient.

Bonfils collects blood donations from our generous donors at seven fixed-site community donor centers and at as many as 13 daily mobile blood drives held throughout the state. More than half of the whole blood donations Bonfils collects are drawn on our mobile blood drive programs. Each year Bonfils partners with 1,100 businesses, civic groups and faith-based organizations to offer convenient and accessible locations for community blood donations. Five of Bonfils’ fixed-site locations provide donors the option to give automated donations whereby particular blood components are collected through an apheresis technique. Apheresis donations, which generally can be given more frequently than whole blood donations, allow patients to donate platelets,

Approximately 10 percent of the nation’s blood supply is given by high-school-aged donors. In coordination with the 16-year-old donor legislation, Bonfils launched our High School Heroes program sponsored by Comcast last fall to empower Colorado’s youth to demonstrate school pride and make a lifesaving difference in their community. Sixty-one schools enrolled in the program resulting in nearly 2,900 donations between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31. Participating donors were entered to win great prizes like a digital camera, PSP, Notebook PC or a 26” HDTV.

Last year the Colorado Legislature opened a portal for Bonfils to reach a new audience of potential donors. In March 2009, Governor Bill Ritter signed legislation that lowered the donor eligibility age from 17 to 16 with parental consent. On Sept. 1, 2009, Bonfils became the 29th state to collect donations from the new donor group at a blood drive at Pueblo West High School in Pueblo West, Colo.

Ian Imamura was our first 16-year-old donor. A member of the school’s football team, Ian never really thought about giving blood until his school organized a blood drive in honor of a student that had

THEPEOPLE

lost her life. Ian was joined by 55 of his classmates, faculty and staff including 17 other 16-year-olds giving their first-ever blood donations.

Between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009 more than 560 16-year-olds began saving lives with Bonfils Blood Center. Bonfils estimates that the new law will bring in an average of 2,000 new, first-time donors each year.

While Ian was just beginning his blood donation habit, five Bonfils donors—David Mihalik, Virgil Olson, Christine Orr, Sandra Reasch and Elizabeth Stewart—reached the 50-gallon donation level and another conquered the 60-gallon milestone.

Bill Burnham knows a thing or two about service–be it service to his community or his country. In December, Bonfils saluted retired U. S. Air Force Master Sgt. and veteran blood donor’s high-gallon success. Over the last 29 years, Bill’s selfless platelet donations saved and enhanced as many as 1,400 lives. Bill’s dutiful allegiance to this lifesaving function is the essence of American blood donors.

U.S. Operations Director of Orion Registrar, Inc. Frank Bush paid a high compliment to our organization stating, “During a visit to Bonfils Blood Center for a quality audit in December 2009, I was impressed by the high-level of quality of all the process and procedure implementation and by the superior commitment to quality exhibited by its management and employees. Bonfils Blood Center has put into practice one of the best quality systems that I have ever had the opportunity to observe.”

2009 OPERATING EXPENSES

Page 9: Bonfils Blood Center's 2009 Annual Report

THE

PRO

CESSAfter community outreach efforts have been

successful in bringing donors through Bonfils’ doors to help ensure an adequate supply, regulatory and internal quality standards and systems are activated. A unit of donated blood and accompanying blood samples enter our laboratories and production and distribution operations and are tested and manufactured into a safe, pure and potent pharmaceutical product that will save and enhance the life of a patient requiring a blood transfusion.

In 2009, Bonfils Blood Center completed a $6 million capital improvement project to our donor testing and reference laboratories along with the manufacturing operations area of the Lowry headquarters in Denver to further improve quality, efficiency and work processes. Understanding the importance of Bonfils’ work in the community and Colorado’s healthcare system, the city and county of Denver issued a low-interest, private activity bond at the request of blood center management to help fund the project. The redesign and expansion project included the addition of:

- Flexible and scalable workstations that adapt not only to the function being performed but also the employee performing the task.

- Automated equipment to weigh, express and seal blood units replacing a manual process and allowing for additional blood product traceability.

- Upright, modular blood and plasma storage units to replace walk-in coolers and freezers.

ISO 9000 refers to a family of quality standards for management systems and individual processes of manufacturing organizations. Certification to ISO 9001 validates that formalized business processes are being applied. Similarly, AABB is an international association representing individuals and institutions involved in activities related to collecting, processing, testing and distributing blood and blood products. The association supports the highest standards of medical, technical and administrative performance, scientific investigation and clinical application through setting quality requirements, education, advocacy and other activities.

There are significant costs involved with collecting, testing, processing and distributing blood donations from the community. That is why Bonfils Blood Center Foundation, the fundraising arm of the blood center, seeks financial contributions to support the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment; maintain our facilities and; provide programs, education and services to the community.

Bonfils Blood Center Foundation’s contributions are secured through grant awards, corporate gifts, planned giving activities and targeted fundraising events. In April 2009, more than 400 community members attended the second annual Because Life

Happens luncheon featuring remarks from Connor Randall—a 17-year-old and two-time heart transplant recipient. The foundation’s signature Chip in for Life golf benefit was held in August. Both events raised thousands of dollars to support the 2009 funding initiatives for the blood center.

The generosity of our financial contributors, along with our blood donors, allows Bonfils to achieve our goal of providing a safe, adequate and efficiently produced blood supply for our community and beyond.

THE

PRO

CESS

Bonfils also pursued ISO re-certification and AABB (formerly American Association of Blood Banks) re-accreditation in 2009. Although affiliation with these organizations is voluntary, Bonfils chose to seek re-certification because of our commitment to continuous improvement and quality.

Independent auditors from Orion Registrar, Inc. who perform ISO audits spent a significant amount of time at Bonfils in 2009 observing and reviewing critical business processes related to blood products and laboratory services. They also observed employee interactions with customers and were highly impressed with all other processes.

The AABB team appraised Bonfils’ laboratories, a community donor center, two local blood drives, manufacturing operations, purchasing and warehouse location, Donor Relations nursing staff, Colorado Marrow Donor Program and more. Additionally, a thorough review of the quality systems that support all of these activities was performed.

Analogous to the feedback from ISO’s independent auditors, AABB assessors were pleased with the processes and systems they observed and commented that it was a pleasure to work with such

well-organized and enthusiastic staff. Subsequently, Bonfils was recommended for accreditation.

Maintaining world-class facilities and focusing on efficiency and excellence throughout our work processes and business systems demonstrates our ongoing commitment to safety and quality throughout blood’s journey from donor to patient.

Giving blood is just one way to help save a life. Bonfils Blood Center also administers the Colorado Marrow Donor Program (CMDP). In the two decades since the CMDP was established, it has added more than 75,000 donors to the Be The Match Registry® and facilitated more than 400 marrow/stem cell matches and 50 cord blood matches for patients all over the globe.

Every year, more than 10,000 people from all ethnic backgrounds are diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases. Roughly 70 percent of these patients will need to search for an unrelated donor. People of similar ethnic backgrounds are more likely to provide tissue matches for one another.

To increase the likelihood of finding matches in minority communities, it is critical that members of the African-American, Asian, Native American and Hispanic communities become part of the Be The Match Registry®.

To assist in this effort, Bonfils’ CMDP established a partnership with the Colorado Rapids in August for the first-ever Rapids Rally for Donors marrow donor recruitment event. By tapping the Colorado Rapids’ loyal fan base, Bonfils’ CMDP added 80 new donors to the Be The Match Registry® at the one-day drive.

Through a variety of community, corporate and special event donor drives, CMDP placed more than 4,700 potential marrow donors from Colorado and Wyoming on the Be The Match Registry® and facilitated 32 stem cell/marrow matches and seven cord blood transfers in 2009.

Bonfils’ Ambassador Program gives blood and marrow recipients and loyal blood donors the chance to advocate the necessity of blood and marrow donations by sharing personal stories with the community.

To encourage donations, Bonfils sends ambassadors into the community to represent Bonfils Blood Center through public speaking at various events, festivals, health fairs and appearing in Bonfils’ publications among other opportunities.

Blood is a precious community resource and without a safe and sufficient blood supply, physicians and other medical providers are unable to do their lifesaving work for patients in need. Established in 1943, Bonfils Blood Center is Colorado’s first and oldest community blood center. Servicing nearly 200 hospitals and healthcare facilities, Bonfils is responsible for the recruitment, manufacturing and distribution of more than 80 percent of the state’s blood supply. Once the needs of the local community are met, Bonfils provides blood products to out-of-state healthcare partners and shares our resources to support disaster preparedness and recovery efforts when called upon, including events like the Oklahoma City bombing, the September 11 tragedy and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Bonfils plays an integral role in Colorado’s healthcare system—a fact that is highlighted each year at the blood center’s Community Lifelines event which introduces a blood recipient to his or her blood donors and celebrates our partnerships with local hospitals.

On July 26, 2007, Jason Lansdown visited his family physician after complaining about pain in his knee. Doctors assumed it was a stress fracture because Jason was a typical active teenager, but x-rays revealed a 22 centimeter tumor in his right tibia.

The following week, Jason began chemotherapy at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center (P/SL) and began preparing for surgery to remove the cancerous tumor. Twenty units of blood, a custom prosthetic to rebuild his leg and the expert medical care he received at P/SL have given him the ability to make a miraculous recovery and earn him the nickname “Bionic Boy”. During the event, Jason had the chance to meet many of the 20 donors who gave the gift of blood and also thank the Bonfils Blood Center and P/SL employees who played a role in his medical care and recovery.

By the fall of 2009, Jason was cancer-free and started college at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where he is pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering in hopes of helping others suffering from bone cancers.

The total cost to add a new member to the Be The Match Registry® is about $100. This includes the initial tissue typing test needed to match donors to searching patients and other related costs. Community members are invited to make a tax-deductible donation to offset the costs of adding new donors to the registry in the future.

After a unit of blood has been donated, tested, manufactured and transported to our hospital partners, it reaches its ultimate destination—a patient in need. The 165,000 blood donations Bonfils collected in 2009 directly benefited up to 495,000 patients in our community and beyond. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a transfusion of donated blood. Blood transfusions are used to treat accident victims, organ and marrow transplant recipients, cancer and heart surgery patients and those with blood-related diseases like sickle cell anemia.

Robin Sicilia Cartwright understands the importance of giving. She spent her formative years watching people give blood in the blood bank her father ran in the Pacific Northwest. Seeing people unselfishly give blood day after day ensconced a sense of altruism in Robin. Little did she know that one day she’d be counting on blood donors to help save her life. In 2004, Robin required several blood transfusions to replace a significant loss of blood due to complications from childbirth.

Thanks to the selfless acts of others an emergent situation was thwarted and Robin is able to watch her son grow and to instill in him the same charitable values she learned as a child.

INDUSTRYACCREDITATION

Page 20: Bonfils Blood Center's 2009 Annual Report

THE

Apheresis donations, which generally can be given more frequently than whole blood donations, allow patients to donate platelets,

facilitate marrow/stem cell matches from local donors to treat patients suffering from blood-related diseases like leukemia and lymphoma.
