C&O recently took a group of customers to the New Holland Combine Harvester factory in Zedelgem, Belgium, to take a closer look at the manufacturing process. The three day trip also involved a tour of New Holland’s tractor plant in Basildon, this year celebrating 50 years of tractor manufacturing. Stopping off in Ypres the group took the opportunity to visit museums and memorials to the First World War, including attending the nightly ceremony at the Menin Gate, visiting the preserved trenches at Hill 62 and Sanctuary Wood war graves cemetery.

Just an hour on from Ypres, on the outskirts of Bruges, lies the New Holland combine harvester factory at Zedelgem. The facility has become a centre of harvesting excellence and manufacturers CR rotary and CX conventional combines, Big Balers and Self Propelled Forage Harvesters. Operating since 1906 and employing over 2,500 people, machines from the world class manufacturing plant are on farms across the globe.

At the factory, as well as having the opportunity to take a close look at the latest models, customers were also given a detailed presentation on the design and production process and walked the factory floor to see the manufacturing process in action.

Andrew Pond

It is with great sadness that we learned that Andrew Pond, Managing Director of Stanley Pond Ltd passed away suddenly on 11th May.

Andrew Pond, with his brother Tim, ran the agricultural franchise at Blandford and Wilton until 2000 when they sold the business to C&O, marking the end of almost 250 years of service by the Pond family to the local farming community. Andrew had worked at the Blandford depot and previously at the company’s site in Wimborne. Andrew is still remembered fondly by the staff still working at C&O who worked for him at Stanley Pond Ltd. Condolences from the directors and staff of C&O go to the Pond family. The funeral took place at Gussage St Michael parish church on Monday 19th May and was extremely well attended by family, friends and former colleagues.

50 Years of Service

At the end of May 2014 Tony McCarthy, Agricultural Sales Representative at C&O’s Wilton depot retired. Starting in 1964 when the Wilton depot was A. Brewer & Co. Tony began his working life as an Apprentice Engineer, back when the workshop was divided into different shops for blacksmiths, combines, electrical welding and tractors. Tony began working for Bob Stacey in the tractor shop, before moving around to build up his experience working in the blacksmiths, combine and baler shops.

After 11 years in the workshop it was a natural progression for Tony to move into sales, his first new tractor sale being a Ford 7000 sold in 1975 to H. Goulding & Son at Ringwood. Since then Tony has sold hundreds of blue tractors to farms across Wiltshire and Hampshire, his biggest achievement being selling 8 tractors in one go to Johnson Plant Hire, Lymington in 1988.

Throughout his career Tony has worked for the three companies operating the agricultural machinery

business at Wilton; A. Brewer & Co., Stanley Pond Ltd and since 2000 C&O Tractors Ltd. Reflecting back on 50 years of agricultural sales Tony says the biggest change is with the technology, ‘back when I started in the workshop there were only four tractor models, with

two different gearboxes, now the range and differences between the machines is enormous.’

Tony, who is retiring on the same day as his wife Diane, is looking forward to finally taking a summer holiday during harvest and catching up with a long list of overdue jobs at home. When asked what he’ll miss most Tony said, ‘I really will miss my customers, they are the most important part of the business and over time you build close working relationships with families. I have lots of customers where I’m working with the third generation of the same family and even have one farm where I’m working with the fourth generation, having started to work with his great-grandfather I’m now working with Mr Simon Martin and his son John at Nunton Farm near Salisbury.

Tony will be missed by customers from the Wilton depot and staff from across the whole organisation. He has made a big contribution during his 50 year service and we wish him a long and happy retirement.

Tony’s position has been filled by Andrew Innes. Andrew is a very experienced agricultural sales man having previously worked for other main dealers in the industry. He can be contacted on 07980 730 243.
