eMpowerment Through Book Choice

• Students are empowered when given choice over what they are reading.

• Using the age-old techniques of Scaffolded Silent Reading (ScSR) method, students are given time throughout the week for teacher-guided independent reading. This time is structured as follows:

1) Allow for free choice in independent novels (3 finger rule) monthly2) Offer short lessons on reading strategies and time in class to read silently 3) Monitor with student checklists and conferences

• Read and Relax—students read silently using comprehension strategies discussed in class.

• Reflect and Respond-Students reflect on reading log, then turn to elbow partner to share.

• Rap- Students share partner’s response with the class and comprehension strategies used.
