Where Business Works.
www.BuffaloNiagara.org/MillionReasons
Buffalo Niagara, located in Western New York with a population of 1.5 million (2010), is a region that is truly on the rise. In the past decade more than 50 American, Canadian, and international companies have set up shop in our region, drawn to the Millions of Reasons Why Business Works in Buffalo Niagara.
Located on the Canadian-American border, Buffalo is less than 100 miles from Toronto, and within 500 miles of 42.2% of the continental bi-national population, or 131 million people. The region is positioned on the shores of two Great Lakes (Lake Ontario and Lake Erie) and boasts Niagara Falls – all of which provide ready shipping and logistics options as well as sustainable energy and plentiful water. Buffalo Niagara is home to seven international ports of entry (four auto, three rail, one water). These ports fa-cilitate $72 billion in annual trade between the U.S. and Canada, the world’s two largest trading partners.
Buffalo Niagara was recently ranked the third least expensive place to do business among 12 U.S. metro areas with populations between one and two million people – and here’s why. Buffalo Niagara offers com-petitive labor rates, which are seven percent lower than the national average. There is ample, afford-able real estate. And the region has a healthy, in-place infrastructure, which includes highway systems, transportation, telecommunications, utilities, schools, and technology.
The region’s labor pool is not only affordable, but educated and ready to work. Each year Buffalo Niagara’s colleges and universities produce more than 25,000 bright, skilled, and enthusiastic graduates.
Buoyed by the area’s affordability, labor force, and logistics capabilities, key industries such as Advanced Business Services, Advanced Manufacturing, Agribusiness, Cleantech, Hospitality/Tourism, Life Sciences, and Logistics are experiencing great growth in Buffalo Niagara. Companies recognize that there are A Million Reasons Why Business Works Here.

RailFeaturing over 1,000 miles of rail and one of the largest railheads in the U.S., the Buffalo Niagara region is served by four Class I railroads (CSX, NS, CN, and CP) and one regional railroad (Buffalo & Pittsburgh, a division of Genesee & Wyoming Inc.), which interchanges with all four Class I railroads.
Both CSX and NS have centrally located intermodal yards, offering superior access to the Port of New York/New Jersey and Chicago, IL. Domestic and international container service is available.
PortThe Port of Buffalo is the first major U.S. Port of Call encountered when entering the Great Lakes. The Port provides many benefits to Buffalo Niagara companies:
• Encompasses Foreign Trade Zone No. 23, which means incentives for area businesses
• Piers with 27 feet of water (Seaway standard depth)
• Two hundred acres located on or near deep water are set aside for bulk cargo storage
• Sheltered by the harbor breakwall, self-unloaders and conventional bulk carriers can safely discharge and load
• Features 230-ton American crawler crane and a heavy-duty front-end loader
• Provides in-port rail service via the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, interchanging with the CSX, NS, CN, and CP
