Simon Godwin (Man and Superman) directs George Farquhar’s wild comedy of love and cash.

The ‘Beaux’: Mr Aimwell and Mr Archer, two charming, dissolute young men who have blown their fortunes in giddy London. Shamed and debt-ridden, they fl ee to provincial Lichfi eld. Their ‘Stratagem’: to marry for money.

Lodged at the local inn, posing as master and servant, they encounter a

teeming variety of human obstacles: a crooked landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a fervent French Count, a maid on the make, a drunken husband, a furious butler, a natural healer and a strange, turbulent priest.

But their greatest obstacle is love. When the Beaux meet their match in Dorinda and Mrs Sullen they are most at risk, for in love they might be truly discovered.

rAchmAninov piano concerto no.3

rimSkY-korSAkov Scheherazade

Sir mark elder conductor | Sunwook kim piano

Sir Mark and the Hallé open Blackburn’s classical season with this exhilarating all-Russian programme: music brimming with vibrant colours and superb melodies. After Mussorgsky’s atmospheric prelude, the phenomenal Sunwook Kim joins the Orchestra for Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto. Kim has the precision and passion to meet the considerable technical and musical demands of this tour de force of the romantic piano repertoire. Then for

the exotic delights of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, in which its eponymous heroine (a solo violin) enthrals with stories of Sinbad the Sailor, a dramatic shipwreck and the thrilling attractions of a Baghdad fair (while cleverly dodging her fate). Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral writing simply takes the breath away.

Pre-concert talk: Sir Mark Elder, Music Director of the Hallé, talks about the orchestra’s working life.

It’s no accident that Vivaldi’s extraordinary colourful and virtuosic quartet of violin concertos has been such a favourite with audiences for almost three centuries. His brilliant evocation of Italian life throughout the seasons with its barking dogs, sultry summer heat, tipsy harvest celebrations and chilly winter scenes is brought out, fresh as a newly-restored old master, by Bradley Creswick and his distinguished colleagues from Tyneside. Tonight also offers an opportunity to hear not only Bach’s boisterous

jam-session of a concerto, his third written for the Margrave of Brandenburg, but two of the most glorious concertos ever written. Many think the interweaving of the violins in the ‘Bach Double’ represents the summit of Baroque perfection, until they hear the other ‘Bach Double’, for violin and oboe!

Pre-concert talk: Leader of tonight’s concert, Bradley Creswick, discusses the evening’s programme.

Verdi operA - LA trAViAtAStarring Bolshoi Theatre guest Soloist, irina Bozhenko in the role of violetta.

(Sung in italian with english surtitles)

Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a large live Orchestra with over 30 musicians.

Following the enthusiastic reception which greeted the performance of Rigoletto opera earlier this year, the renowned Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back with another world-class opera, La Traviata - a love story shrouded in sacrifice and misunderstanding.

This haunting tragedy with its beautiful arias will transport you to the world in which it is set. Giuseppe Verdi brings to the stage the incomparable splendour of mid-19th century Parisian life in all its gaiety, sadness and pathos with a tragic and resonant tale of society and morality in which Violetta, a high-society courtesan with a heart of gold, sacrifices everything for the man she loves. Masterpiece in its own right, it contains some of Verdi’s most beautiful and memorable music.

It encompasses an astonishing range of moods and emotions, from Alfredo’s fresh-faced charms to Violetta’s vivid effervescence, perfectly captured in Violetta’s Toast to life and free will “Libiamo ne’ licit calici” (let’s drink from the joyful cups) and “Sempre libera” (always free) - a vocal showpiece to rival any other.

A deeply moving opera filled with human feeling and strokes of genius.

To see this opera is to have an experience of unforgettable emotive power and reflection.

Madam Buttefly – Set in Japan at the turn of the century, Madam Butterfly is among the most colourful and exotic of all operas, and from its theme of noble self-sacrifice spring melodies that grips your heart.

‘This touching story of innocent love crushed amidst two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.’

Nightclubs and music venues can change lives, define a town, and breed scenes and bands that make music history. Dave Haslam’s new book, Life After Dark, takes us from vice-ridden Victorian venues to acid house and beyond; from Mecca dance halls to mods in basement dives; from psychedelic light shows to high street discos; from the Roxy to the Hacienda; from the Krays to the Slits; and from reggae sound systems to rave nights in Stoke.

This Life After Dark book event will

include Dave Haslam in-conversation with a panel of guests, and a special collaborative music performance. The panel features David Shepperd (Music Journalist and author - Mojo, Q, Uncut and the Observer), Paul Stan Nataraj (Sound and music researcher), Pete Eastwood (Founder-Night at the Museum Live).

Let’s hear your stories too (where did you go out? what’s the best live gig you’ve ever seen?) as we spend an evening discussing and celebrating the value of venues, local and

nationwide, past and present.

Copies of Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs & Music Venues will be on sale at the night with a special discount.

niCK BurtonA talk with author and rambler Nick Burton – From pendle to parliament

A long walk across the fields of England from Lancashire to London

In June 2015 author and rambler Nick Burton set out from his home in East Lancashire to deliver a walkers’ petition to the Houses of Parliament. He attempted to do this the old fashioned way – walking on foot the whole way south to London. As Nick was campaigning to get Britain walking, the 280 mile route he took did not follow any roads. Instead he followed historic green routes – footpaths, bridleways and canal towpaths – navigating his way using OS maps.

Join Nick for an entertaining evening as he recounts the story of his long ramble through the Pennines and Peak District, the cropped fields of the English Midlands, over the Chilterns and along the Thames Path, eventually sneaking into central London by the back door. Along the way he encounters lost medieval villages, Roman roads, prehistoric tracks and the forgotten canals and railways of the industrial age. It is a perilous tale involving sleeping in the shadow of the A5, doing battle with crops and high adventure on the outskirts of Newport Pagnell.
