THE CERNE ABBAS FESTIVAL
The Gaudier Ensemble was formed in 1988, made its London debut in 1989 and in 1991 inaugurated its own annual chamber music festival here in Cerne Abbas. It is invariably a surprise when people discover that, tucked away in this small Dorset village, we have a remarkable coming together of some of the world’s top orchestral principals and chamber musicians. Their playing in the cities of Europe and beyond, their reviews and recordings, books and broadcasts are laid aside for a week whilst they come and live amongst us and make music with old friends.
Today, after over a quarter of a century, the Gaudier still look upon Cerne Abbas as their musical home. They welcome music lovers to their rehearsals, as well as the concerts, in the wonderful acoustic of the village church.

CERNE ABBAS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2018
We are delighted to present the twenty-eighth Cerne Abbas Music Festival, which is now established as a major event in the South West and continues its aim to give concerts of the highest standards performed by the Gaudier Ensemble in a relaxed and informal setting.
The programmes are extremely varied in style and scope, with works from the classical period right up to the present day. Debussy, the innovative impressionist composer and a leading light in the development of 20th century music, died in 1918. We are marking this centenary with several works by him, and these are set alongside other major French composers including Ravel and Saint-Saëns. We are thrilled to welcome back the widely admired harpist Lucy Wakeford who will take the solo role in several of these concerts.
We are again joining forces with advanced students from the Royal College of Music for a performance of a Mozart Wind Serenade in the opening concert. These collaborations have proved very rewarding for all involved. The leading musicologist Robert Philip will introduce the programmes for the week with a talk entitled ‘Where did the past go?’.
Late night concerts in the wonderful acoustic of St. Mary’s are always a particularly atmospheric experience. This year, the concert featuring works inspired in some way by the night should be a very special occasion. Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht seems to be a culmination of all romanticism and never fails to evoke an emotional response. Two famous works by Debussy and Beethoven should make this a wonderful romantic concert.
Our coffee concerts are always very enjoyable, informal affairs where members of the Gaudier Ensemble introduce a wide variety of short works from many genres. These concerts will delight seasoned music lovers, and they also offer an ideal way for newcomers to dip a toe into the richly rewarding world of chamber music.
The Sunday lunchtime concert ends with a Mozart Piano Concerto featuring the renowned Susan Tomes as soloist. Other works in the Festival by Stravinsky, Glazunov, Rossini and Poulenc will make each concert an enjoyable musical adventure through the familiar and lesser-known byways of our musical history. We do hope you will join us for this journey and enjoy outstanding performances in the intimate and
relaxed setting of St. Mary’s Church.
