Animal Farm by George Orwell

‘All animals are equal but some are more equal than

others’ is probably the most known quote of this book.

Many of us have studied this book in school and it is

just as relevant today as when it was written.

Orwell’s cleverly written satire parallels human and

animal behaviour using animals in a farmyard where

all animals live free from human tyranny. Over time,

the pigs become the bosses and manipulate the

language to control the other animals. The gullibility

and self-destruction of followers and leaders is

demonstrated powerfully in this story. It shows how

easy it is for those in power to change the rules and

morals using specific language which in turn changes

the social fibre of the community.

This book, told from the animals point of view, is an

easy read yet with an uneasy storyline. The animals

could easily be transposed to represent political figures

of past and present. (Rocky River ‘Riters)
