INTRODUCTION
A formal management system, in pursuit of excellence and quality improvement, which would
periodically assess the values observed (quality assurance) in schools and units working under
them, is proposed to accomplish that achievement. This authority is named National Business
Education Accreditation Council (NBEAC), was established by Higher Education Commission
(HEC) vide notification No. 1-2/BAC/QAA/2007, dated March, 2007. NBEAC will function at
national level as accrediting authority to facilitate and boost up the quality of business education
in the country.
HEC is determined to make NBEAC a vibrant and progressive body with the mission for fresh
paradigms and targeted developments in business management education. For this purpose
Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) of HEC defined a framework to be followed by NBEAC. This
framework focused on academic pursuits, procedures and schemes of study associated with
them and followed by Business Schools/Institutes/Departments Nationwide.
The operational activities of NBEAC will be supported by academicians and professional
experts, like other accreditation institutions in the world. Peer-reviewing is a functional part of
NBEAC. The assessment will cover exploratory activities, electronic resources, managerial
training, consultancy and public approachability. Peer-reviewing teams will be selected from
Deans and Heads of Business Schools, executives of major corporations, consultants and
assessment experts.
4
Disciplines under the scope of NBEAC
SELF ASSESSMENT PROCESS
One of the most important steps in the NBEAC accreditation process is Self Assessment
Process. The self-evaluation process is designed to gain a clear understanding of School’s
strategic position by assessing its principal constraints and opportunities determined by its
environment, and by looking realistically at the coherence between its ambitions and resources.
The process is designed to judge the overall effectiveness of School’s processes. Self
Assessment provides an opportunity to attain a deeper understanding of any areas that may
need improvement.
The Self Assessment process allows the school to compare itself to the criteria defined in the
national structure as well as that of the NBEAC.
The Self Assessment process will give the school an opportunity to conduct in-depth analysis of
its strengths and weaknesses in its internal and external environments. This will facilitate the
understanding of the efficacy of the schools processes.
The Self Assessment process is expected to take about 8-12 weeks, during which time the
school is encouraged to take advice or make enquiries, either by phone, email or personal
5
visits. The completed proformae will be submitted to Secretariat along with fee of Rs. 300,000/-
and six Self-Assessment Report copies so that the data can be sent to AIC/PRP.
The aims intended to be achieved from the NBEAC Self Assessment are:
Provide the business school with an opportunity to understand its position: The Self Assessment is not intended to be restricted to certain key staff, but instead should
encompass the entire Business School. The intent is to have a holistic understanding of where
the school stands.
Strategic Management: An analysis of the strategic management of the school should be provided using the peer
evaluation guideline linked with the self assessment process.
Understand the current standing of the school: The main purpose of the Self Assessment is to analyze the efficiency of the school in attaining
its mission and motivation towards the enhancement of program and course quality. The Self
Assessment will help the school see where it stands as compared to the NBEAC standard and
subsequently implement the necessary changes.
Peer Evaluation: The Self Assessment process provides a base for the peer evaluation procedure. The school
must provide complete and accurate information in the Self Assessment Proformae to facilitate
the peer evaluation process.
Contribution in understanding the nature of the management education
quality: Self Assessment will also help bring to light certain issues that the school should itself critique,
such as the nature of management education system and the values that the school will need to
operate in that environment.
6
The Process Diagram
The following steps are recommended for the planning and execution of the Self Assessment
process:
Delegation of Responsibilities: The first step of the Self Assessment is that school should appoint a coordinator and a
committee which will be responsible for the accreditation process. It is recommended
that suitably qualified individuals should be assigned this task.
7
Maintain Communication:
From the outset, full information should be provided to the school’s management team
regarding the objectives of the Self Assessment exercise and the level of output that will be
expected from them. All the main stakeholders should be involved in the Self Assessment
process and effective communication with all the involved parties should be sustained
throughout the Self Assessment stage.
Communication with NBEAC:
In addition to maintaining open communication between the participants of the Self Assessment
process, communication should also be maintained with NBEAC especially with regards to
issues of clarity during the process.
