Boone County Family Cemetery Register

The following information was compiled by volunteers working under the direction of the Boone

County Historic Preservation Review Board. Cemeteries are listed alphabetically by name.

While a handful are named for their location (e.g. the Old Belleview Cemetery), nearly all of

them are named for the people buried there.

The compilation has been divided into 2 volumes as follows:

Volume 1 - A-H

Volume 2 - J-Z

Most of them are located in a small area where it appears they draggedand then broken. It is unlikely that any of them are in situ. The broken Louisa Adams marker maybe close to its original location. In addition, there are other in situ fieldstone and finished stonemarkers scattered across the area, which measures about 45 by 50 feet. While there are noAdams located in this area on the 1883 Atlas, the Riley family owned property immediately tothe west, including what is now recorded in the National Register as the Blankenbeker-Riley Farm, built 1913.

COMMENT:See Collins' History of Kentucky, 1874, Vol. I, p 5.

See 1850 census, District #2, Dwelling 142. John Jones 33, b. Pa., A.E.B. in VA. Asthese people died so close together in 1851-52, they may have been victims of a choleraepidemic that hit about that time. (see Howlett family cemetery where epidemic hit in July, 1850).

In the same census, DWG 143, Is Littlebey Allen, no doubt a descendant of Isham Allen. And Elizabeth, wife of Isham, who died in 1853, is listed in District #1,

DWG 260, with Benjamin 38; probably a son from VA. (Gunpowder Creek separated District #1 from District #2)

In 1860, Ben M. Allen is found - DWG 1119 - and in 1870; DWG 34 in the BigBone District. This farm evidently stayed in the Allen family until at least 1883. In the 1860 census we note a George Mosby Allen in the Benjamin M. Allen household.

In Boone County Deed Book C, page 333, is found:Elizabeth, wife of Isham Allen, Mary, wife of Wm. Barton, Jr. and Martha, wife of William

Cheek: James Wesley - Son of Shannon / 1 yr 6 mo 3 das - 1861

COMMENT:For years only the stone of T. L. Ashbrook was observed by various persons walking through the woods in which the cemetery was located. The marker was in perfect condition and near a huge ash tree. After Miss Carpenter sold the property to the Henne Associates, they apparently were going to destroy the cemetery, butenraged citizens of Florence reported the removal of the stone, and also a second stone they had found, to the authorities. The cemetery was abandoned legally andthe remains located by an archeologist. The above were found in metallic caskets with glass face plates, and remains of three other burials in wood coffins. All of these were stored by Linneman and Grubbs until proper advertising and other legal needs were met. There were no claims.

The five remains of bodies were reinterred in the Florence cemetery several months later during May of 1987.

Comments:A Francis Ashbrook once had a tavern in Florence.

Ephraim Aylor married again in 1857 to Elizabeth Crisler. They had two sons, Owen and John, both buried at Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery.

January 11, 2001: At one time, there was some confusion regarding the relationship betweenthis cemetery and the Stanton Aylor Cemetery. The Stanton Aylor Cemetery is located on US 42 just south of 8739 US 42 and was never associated with the E. Aylor Cemetery.

COMMENT:

According to the 1850 census, both Elijah and William A. Rouse and Elijah's wife were bornin Virginia. At the time, there were at least 26 Rouse families and about 124 people in these families.

In the same census can be found the names of William and Tabitha Tanner. Both were born in Virginia and there are indications they lived in Ohio for at least three years before coming to Kentucky. In 1850 they were neighbors of the Elijah Rouses.

Edwin and Jamima Baker, he was born in Ohio, were also close neighbors of the Rouses. There is probably a relationship in these families.

COMMENT:From the booklet "A Journey into the Past", Florence, Ky., 1984 compiled and written byWilliam Conrad, we find the following on pages 5 and 6:

GARRISON CREEKThe valley of Garrison Creek, reached by the road behind the Bullittsburg Baptist Church, once contained a community with its own school, grist mill, and a steamboat landing on the Ohio River. In 1785, Fort Finney, a military blockhouse - the first in this region - was built on the Ohio opposite the mouth of Garrison Creek. General George Rogers Clark and others negotiated a treaty at this place with the Shawnee Indian tribes in the same year. It is believed that the creek derived its name because of the nearby fort.

Boone County Court Order Book A, P 23 (20 April, 1801)A license is granted to James Marshall for keeping a ferry across the Ohio River from themouth of Garrison Run, also to keep a tavern at said place for the term of one year from thisdate.

On the motion of James Marshall it is ordered that his ferry established at the mouth of Garrison Run across the Ohio River be discontinued.

It may be of interest that the Garrison School, moved from the valley to a site on Stevens Road, was the last one-room school in Boone County, Ky. to operate. It closed in 1939 and its last teacher was Mrs. Engells of Bullittsville. The old building is now a residence on Stevens Road.

The above cemetery is indicated on Kentucky Highway/Topo maps.

COMMENTS:In conversation with nearby older inhabitants of the county, it was learned that the grand-parents of Raymond Beemon, 6900 Hopeful Road, Boone County, were interred here. Mr. Beemon, though elderly, confirmed this. He also declared there were others buried there, but he did not remember the names. He also indicated there were no markers, as did the owner of the property. The owner of the property will inform any future buyers of the cemetery, as the property is for sale.

Consulting the 1880 Census of Boone County for the grandparents of Mr. Beemon - Miltonand Sarah Frances Beemon, they were located at Dwelling L#254, Florence District. Their farm is also indicated in the 1883 Atlas of Boone-Kenton-Campbell Counties, Florence Precinct.

The Census record reads:DWG 254 Milton Beemon 39 Farmer. b. in KY Father in VA

Mother in NCSarah F. / wife/ age 36 / born in KY / parents in VASons Wm. 10, Hubert 8, Alonzo G. 3sisters to Milton; Millie 51, Francis 49, (sic)brother to Milton; Henry 52 (a former neighbor to the old farm indicates Henryis interred in the cemetery)

As the above information provides evidence of the Milton Beemon family cemetery at the above mentioned site, it is very possible the above named adults and some infants are interred at the same site.

Further research of probate records and obituaries in the Boone County Recorder wouldsupply dates and more information.

Mr. Beemon also mentioned grandparents in a graveyard off Beemon Lane. They would beof Rouse family.

The following research was submitted by Betty Rouse (Mrs. Robert M. Rouse).

Milton Beemon and Sarah Frances Rouse Aylor, according to "Lon" Beemon, as told toV. Eastman about 1968, graves were known to be in cemetery on the then "Beemon Lane"off Hopeful Road. He had no dates and did not know if there were stones. There were four graves here, but he did not know whose the others were.

Mrs. Rouse also added this;Milton Beemon b. Oct. 14, 1836 / d Feb. 25, 1924Mar. Oct. 30, 1866 to Sarah Frances Rouse Aylor (widow) b. Feb. 26, 1841/

d Jan. 19, 1927Milton Beemon was son of Joshua Beemon and his wife, Rutha Anderson,

who were married Apr. 13, 1811. She died Oct. 2, 1852, age 62 yrs. Joshua's will - Boone Co. Will Bk. M, page 360, Oct. 1862. He was probablydeceased about then. No other records on him.Milton's children were as follows:

COMMENT:

First two above are in 1850 Boone County census, Dist #2, as Blankenbeker. He and shewere born in Virginia, as well as Robert 25, probably a son. Another named Thornton 18,was living with them; born in Kentucky. Another one Franklin 22, was residing with WedeenBeemon who lived next door. The John F. above is probably the Franklin who was born inVirginia. This indicates that the couple came to Boone County about 1830.

Other research indicates they were descendants of the group who settled in Madison CountyVA in the early 1700's. (researched by Wm. Conrad)

COMMENT:Late in the autumn of 1834 Walter Scott held a two-week meeting in the Point Pleasant School House not too far from this place. The meeting sowed the seeds for a Disciples of Christ Church.

Five years later he returned and held another meeting, and at the close the Point PleasantChristian Church was organized with 61 members - perhaps the first church of it's faith inBoone County.

They continued to hold services at the school and at different homes until 1841 when Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brown donated land and a church building was erected.

Abstracted from the Illustrated Historical Edition of the Boone County Recorder ofSeptember 4th, 1930.

Walter Scott was a contemporary Christian preacher with Alexander Campbell.

Comments:Jeremiah Carpenter was a son of Rev. William Carpenter, the first pastor of Hopeful Lutheran Church, and the father of William Eli Carpenter. Julia Ann was formerly a Rouse. See "Clasping Hands", page 154 by E. L. Rouse,

The old cemetery was in a field at the above address for years, but a later proprietor of the property "got tired of looking at the tombstones". He broke them to pieces, and threw the pieces on the back on the property near the railroad track, where they were discovered later by Mrs. Woodward. A subsequent owner then began to build on the property, unaware ofa cemetery being on the place, was told of the cemetery by Mrs. Woodward, but it was too late and no one knew exactly where the graves were. However, the new owner of theproperty did salvage what he could of the tombstones, and they were moved to the Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, where the above information was copied from them. For more data see pages 20-21 of Lentz' History of Lutheran Churches in Boone County, Ky and Emma Lloyd Rouse's "Clasping Hands with Generations Past".

He moved to Boone County, KY from Madison Co., Virginia in 1813 to become the first pastor of the Hopeful Lutheran Church. His grave was marked by the Kentucky Society DAR in 1931, and people living nearby have mistakenly read that marker - which gives the dates of the war - to be his birth and death dates, and because of that, the legend has arisen that a nine-year-old drummer boy in the Revolutionary War is buried here.

The site of the original family cemetery is now part of the interchange at I-75 and Mt. Zion Road. The remains were moved the week before Christmasof 1989, and the tombstones placed with the remains as they were originally.

Comments:The Big Bone - Bender road was once a part of the old Louisville Road from Cincinnati toLouisville Road from Cincinnati to Louisville. In an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer about 1936, by a Ms. Haller concerning Big Bone Licks, she mentions the above grave. The man was on his way to Louisville along the old road and a heavy rain brought the creek up and he was drowned. It was written that he was buried alongside the road and was evidently alandmark for years.

Comment:The original owners of the property where this cemetery is located were, from all indications,well-to-do people. Large obelisks and other markers, which have been practically destroyed by vandals. A double thick rock wall surrounds the graveyard. It was onceprovided with an iron gate with the name CHAMBERS on it. The 1883 Atlas names it as the Mary Scott Cemetery. She was Mary Chambers who married Levi P. Scott. TheHughes residence once sat near this cemetery, but was moved to the present locations. Some say it was "brick by brick; plank by plank". This was probably done in the early 1900's.

One lone granite stone with many fieldstone marked graves.

Comment:The above stone is near the Gunpowder Church, which on the 1883 map was on property, or near property, of the above man. (the church has its own deed registered in Courthousedeed book) according to 1880 Census, the above were Mr. and Mrs. Abram Crisler, both,as well as parents, born in Virginia. Living with them were daughters Lucy Ann 29, and Missouri 19; both born in Kentucky. Next door was son John 38, and wife Mary E. 35. Their children were Emma 10, Elisabeth 7, and Mary 2. All born in Kentucky. The Crislerswere also from Madison County VA and part of Germanna settlement in early 1700's.

The land was once owned by Leonard Crisler in 1825, when he sold land for the old church on June 18th. At the time, a John Crisler was a trustee of the Gunpowder BaptistChurch . Researched by Wm. Conrad

NOTE: In 1999, there was a proposal to relocate this cemetery because of the Carter’s Mill Subdivision being developed there. However, after some of the descendants of the Crislers came forward with objections, Rhein Interests withdrew their relocation proposal (see FiscalCourt minutes October 26, 1999). The cemetery was incorporated into the subdivision. Descendants - Bill Long (works for Parks) - H-586-5441; Norma Long - H- 689-7303Eleanor Damron called 11/1/02 (Crisler is her husband’s family) 371-0319 and again on02/08/05. Comments:According to the 1883 Atlas of Boone-Kenton-Campbell Counties, the land upon which the development is being pursued was lived on by a Wm. P. Crisler, O.W. Gaines, and possiblyMrs. Kate Gaines and others.

On page 9, Bullittsville Precinct, at extreme bottom of map in center, can be seen the residence-setting of Wm. P. Crisler. The entrance to his farm being a lane from an old road that followed the meanderings of Woolper Creek from the Mitchellsville/Dry Creek Turnpiketo the Petersburg/Burlington Turnpike. The residence of Mrs. Kate Gaines lies just to the right of the Crisler place, but it is on the road leading from Bullittsville to Burlington. Justnorth of her home was the Mount Pleasant School and Mount Pleasant PredestinarianBaptist Church. Both disappeared in the 1920s, but the entrance to this developmentis quite near where they once stood.

In the 1850 Federal Census, DWG 884, is recorded Jonas Crisler, 65, a farmer. Born in Virginia; value of real estate $6,500. Also Elizabeth, probably his wife, 62, and Thomas P., 25, a farmer. Both born in Virginia. Residing with them, probably children, Julian F., 18,and Virginia, 16. Also, John H., 7, and Virginia F. Smith, 5, probably grandchildren.

In Boone County Vital Statistics 1852-1859 we find: Jonas Crisler - aged 72; died Sept. 2, 1858; farmer; parents George and Ann Crisler; birthplace Virginia.

As title searches on real estate in Boone County only go back 35 years, it is possible this cemetery was registered in a deed or will.

Depew: Col. Abraham Depew / Born in VA, July 16, 1773, Died in Boone County, KyJuly 31, 1820

Comment:This site is quite near the ancient town of Bullittsburg, and the old road which was laid out from Bullittsburg to the Big Bone Licks when this was Campbell County, Kentucky, was the portion of Williams Road that was closed in the 1940's.

The late James Wainscott once lived in the vicinity and often looked after the gravesite. Heindicated there were other graves around the Abraham Depew grave, and that, according to a legend, Col. Depew was an avid follower of fox chasing. The graves were of his deadfox hounds.

Another report was that they were the graves of people who once lived near the site. Col. Depew's stone was vandalized several years ago.

He, as well as his wife, was a member of the Bullittsburg Baptist Church. He operateda grist mill near the site, and was a Justice on the Boone County Court from November 2, 1808 until his decease. He was no doubt a member of the militia and served in theWar of 1812.

Comment:

This cemetery was desecrated when plant was built. However, when grading, themachinery may not have gone deep enough to have disturbed the remains.

It appears that this graveyard was used over a period of years; from about 1821 to1862. Public or church cemeteries were begun about 1862, so this cemetery was probably abandoned for entombment in that time frame.

Research by William Conrad

No stones visible. Now a contoured field - grassy area between the two driveways of Owen-Illinois if east of first driveway. If east of second driveway, then totally gone- no evidence ofstones or preserved location.

Inscriptions: This is a fieldstone marked cemetery that apparently represents members of

the above family who died in a cholera epidemic. According to Mrs. Wiley and local history, the cemetery was moved in 1941 when Beaver Road was reconstructed. Several graveswere also relocated to a different part of the cemetery in c. 1980 and c. 1995 because ofroad construction. This area needs to be watched closely to make sure that these already greatly disturbed burials are finally left in peace.

James Dudgeon who died in 1824 may have been buried here as well as Betsy Noell Dudgeon, who apparently died during the cholera epidemic of 1849. There are certainly others as well.

Comments: The Glackin family cemetery is a parcel of land set aside as a place of burial for the family of William and Elizabeth Glackin, who had come to Boone Countyfrom Madison County after the close of the War of 1812. They brought withthem their four younger children: William M., who had served in the war and was laying claim to 160 acres of bounty land; Andrew, Rachel, who in 1820 married James M. Lancaster; and Matilda, who in 1827 married John Hoard.

The senior William Glackin operated a tavern in his home. Following his deathin 1821, his youngest son, Andrew, purchased the farm; and over the years, added several sections to the original acreage. Across the hollow in the rearof the Andrew Glackin farm home and on the opposite hillside was the familygraveyard. Saplings were carefully planted and nursed until, together withthe trees that were already there, a splendid grove shaded the burial plot. Astone fence surrounded the area; and handsome monuments were erected tomark the burial sites.

The earliest burial took place in 1820, and the last in the summer of 1909. Theplot was specifically set aside and reserved as a cemetery in the will of Andrew Glackin, dated 17 Jan. 1882, and admitted to probate, 5 March, 1883.(Boone County Will Book XIII, pp 177-8) The cemetery became difficult to reach as no roadway was ever provided, only "one wood of land in good shape". The balance of Andrew Glackin's farm was sold to Frank F. Robinson, who held it until his death in 1925. Both of his wives, Laura Glackin Robinsonand Georgia Carpenter Robinson, were grand-daughters of Andrew Glackin.

The cemetery is now on the farm of Lewis G. Davis, 371 Richwood Road, Walton,Kentucky. It has been neglected for years, and many of the monuments, are in such poor condition that they are no longer legible.

COMMENTS

Cattle had roamed through the plot, upset the monuments, trampled the smallerones under foot, and dragged portions of the larger ones down the hillside. Nofence now exists to keep the animals out, and the abandoned graveyard is attractiveto farm animals because of the shade provided by the numerous large and beautifultrees that surround the area.

The following inventory was made in 1957 by James R. Glacking, 1130 DawesStreet, Libertyville, Illinois, 60048, a descendant of the family. It is based oninscriptions that were still legible at the time, contemporary news accountsfound in the files of the Boone County Recorder, and family remembrances.

The above was written by James R. Glacking, and appeared in the 1978 Kentucky Ancestors V 13-3 pages 148-150

The researcher was told that the house, close to where this graveyard is located, was livedin by a Huff, who was a great duck hunter. He would often, in cover of darkness, place barrels on small islands in the shallows of the Ohio. He used them as duck blinds and whena flock of wild ducks alighted on the river in daylight, he was waiting for them.

One year a heavy snow covered the piles of unhusked corn lying in the fields around thehouse. Ducks would often feed on the corn and that winter was no exception. He watchedthem from a window while his wife was sewing on a bed sheet. Then he got a bright idea, and had his wife sew him a sheet as camouflage. With a gun hidden he sneaked outthrough a door quietly, and crawled into the midst of the feeding ducks undetected. Once there, he picked his target.

This also might be the resting place of some of the Craig family.

"Adjacent to the farmland once owned by the Aylors in a country estate with wide, beautiful blue grass meadows. There are few trees, but a forest is easily recognized in the distance. It has been called the "Haunted Woods". In early days this acreage was the plantation of John Hamilton. The family cemetery is in the "Haunted Woods", and old dates inscribed on stones are now lying on the ground...”

"John Hamilton's will (Will Book D, page 320) states that he was born in BuckinghamCounty, Virginia, on January 24, 1774. He requested that his remains be interred in the family graveyard on his farm. His daughter, Martha, married Morris Lassing, who came directly from Bavaria in 1824....John Hamilton had a brother, Isham Goss Hamilton, who was County Clerk of Boone County for many years.”

Direct Descendent - Dr. J. M. Huey - 745 Walton-Nicholson Pike - 356-9008 - Very interested in thepreservation of the cemetery.

Dr. Huey and Tim Stephens (gravedigger at Richwood Presbyterian Church Cemetery) havecleaned up the cemetery. Hicks: Susan Inscriptions are undetermined and no record of cataloging has been found. The nameSUSAN HICKS was read on a tombstone after the cemetery had been disturbed. Researchindicates the family of James Hicks resided in this vicinity in 1850, and it appears his wife was Susan Hicks. Both were reported being born in Virginia

Hix (Hicks): JamesFurther research in Census Records and Boone County Vital Statistics 1852-1859, indicate JAMES HIX (Hicks) aged 60 / Died June 19, 1857. Susan Hicks remained on the Census roll until 1870, and at that time she was reported at being 61. In 1880 her name failed to appear in the Census. However, Ezekiel Hicks, who was probably a son of James and Susan Hicks, was still on the roll / in 1850 he was 11, in 1860 - 19, in 1870 - 30, and in 1880 - 39. Other children also stayed on the roll until they either died or married and movedaway. Susan at age 61 in 1870 would have born about 1809, and her husband - according to the Vital Statistics - 1797.

This was prepared to help in the Cemetery preservation in Boone County, and have a record in case a relative or other interested party inquires of the Hicks family.
