Chinese 'presence' in Australia extends from well before the time of Captain Cook, trading with northern Australia long before European settlement. Robert Macklin traces a new history of our two nations, beginning from pre-colonial times, to John Macarthur's 'coolie' shepherds, the only Chinese bushranger, Sam Pu, and the atrocities committed against the Chinese in the gold rush, through to the present, canvassing our deepening economic bonds. Mr Macklin will give a talk on Dragon & Kangaroo, followed by a discussion with Professor Bob Carr, ACRI Director, and a Q&A session with the audience. ACRI joins the China Law Research Group in the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Faculty of Law to present the second Chinese-Australian Dialogue on IP Protection and Border Enforcement, a continuation of our forum in 2014 with Australian Border Force, IP Owners Association and Chinese counterparts. The China Law Research Group at UTS, led by Professor Natalie Stoianoff, has become the pre-eminent Australian hub for collaborative research and engagement in corporate/commercial law, intellectual property, communications and criminal law.

ACRI welcomes Canadian scholar Professor Gordon Houlden, a specialist in Canada-China relations, to speak on Canada's experience managing a China policy with reference to Canada's close relationship with the US. Professor Houlden is Director of the China Institute, Professor of Political Science and Adjunct Professor of the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta. Professor Houlden also served in the Canadian Foreign Service in Havana, Hong Kong (twice) Warsaw, Beijing (twice - most recently as Minister 2001-2004) as Executive Director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (2004-2006).

ACRI welcomes John Mathews, leading scholar on greening of capitalism and the role that China and East Asian countries are playing in this process. Professor Mathews will be joined by Professor Bruce McKern to discuss the themes of renewables, the transition to renewable energies in China and the institutional changes needed to provide industrial capitalism with long-term sustainability. Professor Mathews currently holds a Chair in Strategic Management at Macquarie Graduate School of Management. Professor Bruce McKern is Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Business School.
