APRILBOOSTER-2018
First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Alan Quinton and I am the incoming Exalted Ruler for the fraternal year 2018-2019. On behalf of me and my fellow officers, thank you for the opportunity to help guide our Lodge through what I know will be another great year.
My goals as your Exalted Ruler are to grow and enhance our Lodge’s social programs, boost our fundraising efforts, increase the visibility of our community activities, increase our membership and volunteer opportunities, and keep our Lodge financially healthy.
I sincerely believe the San Rafael Elks Lodge is one of the best-kept secrets in Marin – and it should not be! Many people across our county are looking for ways to give back to their community and it’s our job to let them know that the answer is right here in San Rafael. It’s not only about the pool, or the great dinners, or family-friendly atmosphere, but rather charitable work we do in our community.
In order to accomplish this, we need to keep working hard on increasing the visibility of the Elks and the work we do in the community. To this end, the year is already off to a great start with a new event being organized right now– the May Madness After-Party on May 12. This will be a big event for the Lodge – on par with the Halloween bash – which will bring lots of classic car enthusiasts to the Lodge and give us the opportunity to introduce the Elks to many potential new members. It will also be the first event in which we are partnering directly with the City of San Rafael in advertising. Big shout out to Kerry Mullins, Pete Crowley and Bob Meier for helping secure the band Pride and Joy on the Terrace for this!
Finally, I’d like to extend a personal message to all of you new members out there – if you have not yet found a way or are unsure how you can help the Lodge and the great causes we support we have a lot of volunteer opportunities available – please reach out to us at [email protected] and we can get you on our volunteer list! Going forward we are going to strive to more diligently match your interests with our needs.
I feel so fortunate to be working with such a dedicated group of individuals. Thank you for your support and feel free to contact me anytime at [email protected]
Your Exalted Ruler,
Alan Quinton

Ps. An additional note from Exalted Ruler Alan
A quick update on the pool. The good news is – the pool likely will be open before June. The bad news is – the pool really needs a lot work, lots of deferred maintenance and it’s not something we could undertake during the rainy season when we need to drain the pool to make the repairs. As such, the House Committee will target the end of October or so when it is nice and dry and after most of the summer swim season is over to take this work on. Some of this work we may take on ourselves and some of it we may pay for but we hope we can depend on all of you who love the pool and use it will consider donating your time and energy to help us get this done and/or attend the Pool Fundraiser on Friday, April 27 to help defer these costs.
Also, I wanted to take the opportunity to dispel some misinformation circulated about the cost of the pool. Last year we made the decision that the pool use should be a benefit of membership and all Elks in good standing could use it for free. To offset the loss of revenue this would create, we closed the pool for 5 months during the winter to save the 14K in heating costs for that time. So overall there was NO net loss in revenue for the pool and we made exactly as much money running the pool last year as this year. Whether you agree with the previous policy or like the new one better (and there were plenty of members in both camps) the financial impact to the Lodge was no different.

A Fundraiser for Our Community’s Landmark Park Playground Including BETTER than Just Wheelchair Access for Kids!
In addition to raising almost $1,000, we BBQ’d, face painted, and had a grand time playing with our community!
On March 10th, San Rafael Elks Lodge #1108 partnered with Make a Difference (MAD) in supporting the Softball Fest at Albert Park, a fundraiser for upgrades to the children’s playground, including making the playground BETTER than wheelchair accessible for our special young ones.
