ABOUT THIS BIRD LIST
Birdwatching is a captivating pastime with more and more people, young and old, becoming involved. There are many excellent bird books and identification field guides, including the Department of Environment and Conservation's 'Bush Book' series to assist in distinguishing one bird from another. Volunteers with the departmen;'s LANDSCOPE Expeditions indicated a need for a State checklist to record their bird sightings. Avid birdwa tchers and beginners alike will find this list easy to use.
This checklist of Western Australian birds does not include rare vagrants. In this edition of Book that Bird! we have adopted the .Christidis and Boles (2008) classification to provide uniformity with 'Birds Australia' who are also using this list. For a complete list of birds recorded for Austra lia, readers should consult Systematics and Taxonomy of Australian Birds by Les Christidis and Walter Boles published in 2008 by CSIRO Publishing (www.publish.csiro.au/pid/5702.htm). In our list, naturalised species are indicated by an asterisk(*). It should be noted that the Rainbow Lorikeet, although introduced in the south-west of the State, is native to the Kimberley.
This list will help you to maintain a record of birds observed, not only from your backyard, but from the many and va ried habitats in the suburbs, southern forests, Goldfields, deserts, Pilbara and Kimberley. Bi rds commonly encountered on Christmas and Cocos islands have been included because of their proximty to Western Australia.
Over time the species recorded can provide valuable information on bird numbers, seasonal changes or fluctuations in distribution as well as information on times of breeding. Reliable, long-term observations from any area provide useful information for developing conservation strategies. For the traveller, the checklist provides a convenient and permanent method of recording information that may otherwise be lost.
However, Book that Bird I does not replace the need to carry a notebook in wh ich you can record more detailed notes on individual bird observations from a range of areas.
It is suggested that a new column be used for each locality or day of observation. INDEX TO BI RDS Space is provided at the front of the booklet to record the area covered, route details or specific localities (including Global Positioning System (GPS) for latitude and Albatrosses 11 Drongo 27 longitude). A table is provided on page 32 for more detailed bird records including Avocet 16 Ducks 9 numbers observed and breeding information. Babblers 25 Eagles 14
Baza 14 Egrets 13 Although most native animals in Western Australia are nocturnal, a list of those more Bee-eater 21 Emu 9
likely to be encountered on bush walks or at night while spotlighting, is included on Bellbird 26 Emu-wrens 22
pages 33 and 34. A list of the most common feral an imals occurring in the State is Bitterns 13 Fairy-wrens 22
provided on page 36. Space for any reptile records is provided on page 35. Boobies 12 Falcons 15 Bowerbirds 22 Fantails 27
We would appreciate feedback from users on any modifications or additions to the Bristlebird 22 Fieldwren 22
checklist you would find useful. Please send any information or suggestions to the Brolga 15 Fig bird 26
