We were blessed with perfect weather, a great ring location, a very efficient ring steward, judges who obviously enjoyed their task and exhibitors from across Canada, the United States and even Great Britain. Sincere thanks to EVERYONE involved. Specialty Results and Critiques Judge: Lesley A Gosling (Akenside Border Terriers) England Thank you all for your warm welcome and for accepting my decisions so sportingly. Margaret Armstrong and I felt very much part of your Canadian Border ‘family’. It was especially good to discover mutual acquaintances, remember long lost friends, long gone dogs and long ago shows and make some new friends with whom we hope we can keep in touch, as the world shrinks about us! It was a great honour to be invited to judge the entry of Border Terriers at your annual show at Long Sault. There can surely be no other open air venue to match this one for weather, location, outlook, access - and friendliness, and that was just the dogs! My grateful thanks to Kerry-Lynne, my steward, who kept me right on protocol, with good humour. I was impressed by the Canadian Border entry. Those exhibited were well presented and typical for type, with that varminty and interested expression which so characterises our breed. Size overall was very good with few dogs unspannable. Temperaments were excellent and I found no tail kinks, dirty ears or flat, spread feet. I found some dentition problems, where incisors were skewed off the scissor bite and pushed to one side giving a slightly wry mouth. Please pay regard to this, which, if not caused by work, can miss a generation of breeding, but pop up in the next. Fronts were problematic on one or two exhibits - upright, steep shoulders affect front movement, Coats varied in depth and quality. Some lacked undercoat, others their harsh topcoats, but given the high temperatures, I expected variations and accepted evidence of both. One or two dogs presented had untypical ear carriage, but the overall quality was very good indeed and the puppies were very promising prospects for the future. I did, however, have real concerns about the tight ‘stringing up’ of some exhibits. Borders are not Fox terriers dancing on their toes. Stringing up doesn’t disguise poor conformation or enhance presentation. Judges can find all they need to know when a dog is on the table. Please do consider your dogs’ comfort in the ring. In conclusion, I congratulate Border Terrier Canada on the efficient running of your show, and you as breeders and owners for the exhibits you brought for me to examine and enjoy. I wish you every success with your future breeding programmes, which are obviously in very safe hands.

Border Terrier Canada 2016 National Specialty (cont’d) Puppy & Veteran Sweepstakes - Judge: Jan Hewitt (Sparravohn Border Terriers) Maryland, USA

Thank you for inviting me to judge sweepstakes at your 2106 Specialty. It was an honor I greatly appreciate. And thank you to the exhibitors who entered their Border Terriers for me to judge. In general, front assemblies and shoulders supported proper movement, angulation and forechest were good, heads were appropriately moderate without exaggeration, teeth were large and bites sound, ribs well back varied a bit, underlines varied a bit, hides varied a bit, coats were good, feet were tight and all were spannable. Two things I noted were, substance was occasionally lacking as was shoulder angulation and layback. In more than one of the classes the merit was deep and placements could have changed on different days. I had a wonderful time and hope all who allowed me to judge their dogs enjoyed the experience. We had a small but keen entry with juniors representing three Canadian provinces and Great Britain Sincere thanks to those exhibitors who kindly loaned dogs, to the parents and mentors for encouraging our juniors – they are vital to the future of our breed, and of course to the youngsters who were not afraid to get out there and strut their stuff. Border Terrier Club of Ontario/Border Terrier Canada Specialty Earthdog Tests Woodlands Campground LONG SAULT, ONTARIO

AUGUST 29, 2016

The decision to hold two CKC Earthdog Tests as part of the BTC.BTCO Specialty weekend events was a last minute one but it turned out to be a very good one. A spectacular setting, wonderful judges, a dedicated committee, enthusiastic exhibitors and the easiest digging in my 30 plus years of volunteering at Earthdog events combines to make it a memorable day. Time and space limited us to offering only Intro to Quarry and Junior in both tests but we had a great turnout.

Sincere thanks to our judges: Marg Pough, Maria Sacco and Camilla Moon for giving generously of their time and expertise; to the committee: Jen Holder, Barb Hathorn, Linda Hough, Marnie Fielding and Karen Nesbitt, and to the CKC for making a one-time exception and allowing two clubs to hold an Earthdog tests on the same day, albeit at the same location.
