ABSTRACT

The BOReal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS) is a large multinational study of boreal forest interactions with the atmosphere. Carried out mainly in two study areas in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, BOREAS included a significant biometry component. This report, the first of two Canadian Forest Service reports on the dendrochronology of BOREAS samples, describes the tree allometry sampling program, and it presents the results of X-ray densitometry analyses oftree allometry samples collected in the BOREAS program. These samples are mainly cross-sectional slices of trees collected at regular intervals from the base to the top of the crown. The sampled trees come from six of the tower sites and two auxiliary sites. In all, 938 samples from 75 trees are reported on here.

The BOReal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS; Sellers et al. 1995) is a major international project involving hundreds of researchers, mainly from Canada and the United States. The BOREAS program involved detailed investigations of sites in the boreal forest of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, mainly in the areas around Thompson (Northern Study Area, NSA) and Prince Albert (Southern Study Area, SSA). Additional sites along a transect joining these two areas and extending beyond them have been less intensely investigated, both as part of BOREAS and as part of the larger Canadian Forest Service's Boreal Forest Transect Case Study (BFTCS; Price and Apps 1995), which is part of the Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems (GCTE) Core Project of the International GeosphereBiosphere Programme (IGBP; Koch et al. 1995).

The major focus of many of the individual studies in BOREAS is the dynamics of carbon in the boreal forest. Carbon dynamics are of interest because of the role gaseous carbon compounds play in the global climate system. Global climate is expected to warm considerably over the next several decades, largely in response to anthropogenic emissions of CO, and other greenhouse gases (Houghton et al. 1996).

The boreal zone is expected to be one of the most sensitive to this global change, in part because higher latitudes are expected to experience greater warming than lower latitudes (Houghton et al. 1996). At the same time, the boreal forest is itself one of the larger global reserves of organic carbon, and has the potential to either enhance or reduce the rate of buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (Price et al. 1997). Trees fix atmospheric carbon as cellulose through photosynthesis; the rate of carbon fixation is in large measure a function of the health of the individual tree. Hence, an improved understanding of the carbon dynamics of the boreal forest is of great interest.

In this report, we present the results of X-ray densitometry analysis of samples collected as part of the BOREAS allometry program. The allometry program was aimed at developing allometric equations for tree volume increment for use in forest growth models. The samples used here are replicates of samples used by Gower et al. (1997) for the development of volume allometric equations. Not

INTRODUCTION

all samples used by Gower have been included in this report; due to the large nature of the project, some samples were lost in transit, destroyed in processing, or were received with illegible or incorrect labels. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the data included in this report. This report therefore includes 938 samples from 75 trees collected from eight sites (Fig. 1; Table I).

X-ray densitometry enables the simultaneous measurement of ring width and density at several points within each ring. Ring width data is required to calculate volume increment, while wood density is a critical variable affecting wood quality (Jozsa and Middleton 1994). Biomass increment calculations also require both ring width and density data.

Tree ring widths have often been used to determine the sensitivity of tree growth to climate and other environmental factors (Fritts 1976). Similarly, ring denSity has been shown to be highly sensitive to climate and other factors, and in closed boreal forest stands, where ring width is often only weakly sensitive to climate, ring density has been shown to be much more strongly linked to climate (Jozsa et al. 1984).

This report provides a detailed description of the laboratory methods used in the analysis and summary information on each tree and each sample analyzed. This report is accompanied by a DOSformatted CD-ROM. The CD contains digital files of the actual X-ray images, as well as the detailed data for each sample in DendroScan (VaremSanders and Campbell 1996 ) format. There is also a utillty program (XDATA.EXE) for extracting the condensed DendroScan format files into full ASCII tables. The CD also contains summary information for each individual tree ring, arranged by sample and by tree.

A second report will be forthcoming containing the same information for the biometry samples, which were mainly increment cores collected at breast height from a large number of trees at most BOREAS biometry and auxiliary sites.

The data on this CD are provided freely for general use. Researchers intending to make extensive use of the data or encountering difficulties with them are asked to contact the authors.

Sampling was conducted in the summer of 1994. Disks were cut from selected trees at selected sites, at the base of the tree, at breast height, at the base of the live crown, and at regular 2-m intervals along the entire stem.

These disks were measured in the field to obtain a fresh (or green) diameter. On arrival in Edmonton, they were air-dried and re-measured. They were then reduced to sticks about 5 em wide and 3 em thick, passing through the pith and thus including two complete radii at 1800 from each other. Figure 2 shows an overview of the subsequent processing. Detailed lab methods can be found in Varem-Sanders and Campbell (1996).

These sticks were then further reduced to thin slivers about 6 mm wide and 1.5 mm thick. One of the two slivers from each disk included the pith, the other did not. In some cases, particularly small diameter disks or disks that had cracked extensively on drying, only one sliver was obtained. The thickness of each sliver was measured at several points using calipers. These slivers were then wrapped in cloth and subjected to extraction of

volatiles by repeated soaking in hot water and in a mixture of cyclohexane and ethanol. After removal from the extraction, the slivers were pressed into a slight curve, to accommodate the parallax in the X-ray chamber.

The slivers were arranged in sets in the X-ray chamber; each set was accompanied by the same calibrated precision-cut plastic wedge. This wedge is of sufficient thickness at one end to intercept more X-rays than the densest of 2-mm thick wood samples, and tapers to a nearly perfect knife-edge. A thin wire is attached to the thin end to mark it on the X-ray images. This enables researchers to calculate density from the gray-value of the X-ray image at any point in the wood samples and scaling of the image. The specifications for this wedge are given in Table 2. The calculation of wood density requires the location on the wedge at a point yielding the same gray-value as the point in the wood for which the density is desired. The thickness of the wedge at this point is determined by interpolation from the position of this point between the thick end of the wedge and the inside of the wire. If the wood is assumed to be completely dry, the thickness of the wedge at this point is multiplied by the calibration constant to obtain the mass of the wood per square centimetre at that point. This number is then divided by the thickness of the wood sample:

Wood denSity::: wedge thickness x calibration constant wood thickness

In practice, most wood samples are believed to have been processed vvith about 6% moisture content,

thus a calibration constant corrected for humidity should be used.

These images were photographically enlarged by a factor of 2x, and these prints were scanned using a 600 dots per inch (dpi) (optical) grayscale desktop scanner. DendroScan, software written for the analysis of X-ray images of tree-rings (VaremSanders and Campbell 1996) was used to analyze the resulting digital files.

Each sliver was then cross-dated first with the other sliver from the same disk, with other samples from the same tree, then with other samples from the site, and ultimately with samples from other sites, to ensure the proper identification of ring boundaries. From the approximately 1000 disks received at the Northern Forest Centre, an estimated 1500 slivers were processed, representing 938 disks from 75 trees.

The images presented on the CD are not the same digital images used for the analysis. The images were re-scanned for this publication from the original negatives using a 2000 dpi (optical) desktop scanner. This represents an improvement in resolution compared to what was available at the time of the original DendroScan analyses. In order to fit all images on a Single CD, however, not all were scanned at the full 2000 dpi; samples with wide rings were often scanned at a lower

Samples were collected mainly from sites used for gas flux experiments (Tower sites). Detailed information about each site can be found in Halliwell and Apps (1997a, b, c). Table 3 gives some basic information about each site in this report.

Samples from 75 trees are presented here. The trees range from 1.85 to 18.3 m in height and include

resolution. The actual scan rate is included in the header information for each file on the CD.

Several trees were sampled.in a way that was not conducive to X-ray densitometry analysis. As the X-rays pass through the sample, it is important that parallax be minimized to avoid blurring of the final image. This is accomplished by cutting the disk at a right angle to the stem, ensuring that the structure of the tree rings is perpendicular to the plane of the disk. Of the 80 trees sampled, several were found to have been cut at a distinct angle to this ideal orientation; although in many cases it was possible to correct this in the laboratory using the thickness of the disk to adjust the angle, there were five trees for which the disks were too thin to make this correction.

Also, the X-ray densitometry laboratory and our teclmiques were under continual development during the processing of these samples. Although many samples have been at least partly reprocessed to compensate for this evolution, it should be noted that the relative humidity control in the X-ray laboratory was not adequate during the time most of these samples were processed. Although this does not affect the relative densities within the samples on each individual X-ray image, the absolute density values may have as much as a 5% error due to humidity variations in the laboratory between X-ray sessions. This does not affect the density of the calibration wedge, which is a non-hygroscopic plastic.

DendroScan stores data in a special binary format in which each bit is assigned a different meaning (Varem-Sanders and Campbell 1996). These files contain basic information about each sample, and also contain pixel-by-pixel density data. Pixels marking ring boundaries are also indicated.

The .ISC files can be read by the extraction utility XDATA.EXE. This menu-driven utility allows the user to select a file for extraction and extract from it either the summary data (ring widths and densities) or the full raw data (pixel-by-pixel densities and flags). Figures 3 and 4 show examples of summary and raw data reports. Reports are given the file extension ,OAT or .RAW and are saved in the directory C:\XDATA \REPORTS\. Each file contains all samples taken from one tree.

The digital images are stored in compressed files (with a .zIP extension). The images are stored as Tagged Image File format (.TIF) files and should be readily importable into most commercial graphics software. Figure 5 shows a sample image.

The .ZIP files will decompress with an approximate ratio of 3:1 with PKUNZIP, WINZIP, or other ZIP software. Similarly, the DendroScan data files (.ISC files) will extract to summary data files with a ratio of about 2:1 and to raw data files with a ratio of about 2: 1 using the extraction utility. Thus the entire contents of the CD would occupy about 2 GB of hard-disk space when uncompressed; be sure to have sufficient space available before decompressing these files.

a PIBN = jack pine (Pinus banksialla), peGL == white spruce (Piceaglauca), PCMA = black spruce (Preen mariana), and PPTR = aspen (Populus treml/loides).

b The basic density factor is the factor used to convert oven-dry density to basic density. Oven-dry density is oven-dry mass (less than 0.1 % water) per oven-dry volume. Basic density is not measurable directly and represents dry mass per fresh volume.

c X-ray densitometry measurements are strongly influenced by the quality of the original X-ray image and the scanning quality. The image condition given in these tables is a qualitative assessment that can be translated as follows:

Good = High confidence in the width and density numbers reported. Medium"" Ring width in some samples may be unreliable due to parallax. Poor = Ring width in many of the samples may be unreliable. Very poor = Samples not reported here due to poor image quality of most samples.

Note: The tree diameter at breast height (DBH) is also used in the BORIS tree-numbering system to identify the individual trees in a plot.
