Fire Resistant Fluids
Industrial Hydraulics
Bosch Rexroth2 Hydraulic Cylinders
1. This classification includes fluids such as phosphateesters, phosphate ester/hydrocarbon blends, organicesters and other fire resistant industrial fluids. It does notinclude synthetic fluids such as Skydrol or Aero-Safe,which are formulated for use in aircraft hydraulic systems.
2. High water content fluids include micro-emulsions andwater soluble synthetics which contain up to 95% water.

4. Pump can be used with this fluid; however, the maximumacceptable pressure and/or drive speed should be verifiedby factory.
INTRODUCTION
The accompanying list of the more common fire resistantfluids is for your use as a reference in identifying a specificfluid as to the type and viscosity. This list is not to beconstrued as an approval or acceptance on the part ofRacine Fluid Power that these fluids are recommended foruse in components of our manufacture. Detailed informa-tion pertaining to physical properties may be obtained fromthe fluid supplier.
Within each general classification or brand of fluids, theremay be a considerable variation in fluid formulation andquality. Consequently, it is suggested that when usingcertain components or types of fluid, the customer consultthe factory for specific recommendations based on theapplication requirements. Information on the use of highwater content fluids can be found in Racine publication S-128, “Facts About HWCF”.
For further information regarding the changeover and useof fire resistant fluids, it is recommend that the customerobtain ANSI Standard B93.5-19 (R1988), “Practice forthe Use of Fire Resistant; Fluids in Industrial HydraulicFluid Power Systems.” This standard is available at anominal cost from the National Fluid Power Association,3333 N. Mayfair Drive, Milwaukee, WI 53222.
RECOMMENDATIONS
In addition to observing specific recommendations ofviscosity, temperature, filtration, seal selection, maximumpressure, drive speed, and flow, the following table shouldbe used as a reference in determining the suitability of afluid for use in a particular type of pump.
Hydraulic Cylinders 3Bosch Rexroth
Viscosity:
When using spring governor, Silentvane, radial piston, orgear pumps, the fluid viscosity should be maintained at thesame operating levels as when using premium gradehydraulic oils. The specific viscosity recommendations aredetailed in Bosch Rexroth Publication 9 535 233 456,“Petroleum Hydraulic Fluids”.
The only deviation from these recommendations isapplicable when using water-in-oil emulsions, which arenon-Newtonian. In other words, when passing throughsmall passages or when exposed to conditions of highshear, such as are encountered within pumps, the viscositydrops to a value lower than that indicated by laboratoryviscosity tests. In general, almost all water-in-oil emulsionshave a viscosity of from 200 to 250 SUS @ 100°F underconditions of shear. These viscosities are within ourrecommendations.
Twinvane pumps have the capability of operating onconventional lubricants as well as the high water contenthydraulic fluids which have viscosities approaching that ofwater.
Temperature:
It is desirable practice to limit the bulk fluid temperature toa maximum of 120°F. Higher temperatures will causeexcessive rates of water evaporation when using the watercontaining fluids as well as, in some instances, the loss ofthe more volatile inhibitors.
Higher fluid temperatures in combination with poor fluidmaintenance, can cause an acidic breakdown ofphosphate ester fluids. Limiting fluid temperatures to lessthan 120°F also helps to prevent acid formation in thefluid.
Most synthetic fire resistant fluids have viscosity indexeswhich are much poorer than those of petroleum oils.Consequently, small changes in the bulk fluid temperaturecan cause significant changes in the fluid viscosity.
Inlet Conditions:
All fire resistant fluids weigh more per unit of volume thanpetroleum oil. The higher specific gravity and higher vaporpressures of the water containing fluids will aggravatepump inlet conditions. Consequently, the inlet must beunrestricted, and the inlet vacuum must not exceed 3inches of mercury.
When using Twinvane pumps with high water contentfluids, overhead or “L” shaped reservoirs arerecommended. If the pump is mounted on top of thereservoir, the liquid level should not be more than 12inches below the pump.
Seal Compatibility:
Buna N seals can be used satisfactorily with the water-glycols, water-in-oil emulsions, and the high water contentfluids. Viton generally must be used when synthetic fluidsare utilized as the hydraulic media. Viton can also be usedwith the water-glycols, emulsions and high water contentfluids except in shaft seal applications on water glycolwhich should use a Buna N shaft seal.
Filtration:
Filters should be selected on the basis of the type of fluidbeing filtered, giving consideration to proper micrometreratings, filter types, capacities and compatibility.
In general, a 10 micron return line filter will providesatisfactory protection for systems operating in typicalindustrial applications.
Inline suction strainers are not recommended for hydraulicsystems containing Bosch Rexroth pumps. If strainers areused, make sure they are no finer than 60 mesh (238micrometre) and rated at three times pump outlet flow. Acoarse screen having 1/8 inch diameter openings shouldbe used with Twinvanes that are mounted above the fluidlevel.
WARRANTY
Our normal warranty against defects in material andworkmanship applies when our equipment is used with thefire resistant fluids. This warranty does, however, applyonly to product defects and does not constitute aguarantee on our part against very rapid and acceleratedwear of pumps when using fluids of questionable quality.
