BOSTON COLLEGE vs. MICHIGAN STATEBoston College travels to the Midwest to take on Michigan State on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena, marking the first of its battles against the Big Ten during the 2014-15 regular season. Last season, the Eagles went 3-2-1 against the Big Ten conference, beating Penn State twice and Wisconsin, 9-2, on Jerry York night. BC lost at Michigan in the season opener followed by a draw and a loss at Minnesota last October. The Spartans have dominated the overall 25-game series, holding a 17-7-1 advantage over Boston College and winning perhaps the most important game between the two programs in 2007. Current Detroit Red Wing Justin Abedelkder broke the hearts of Boston College with the game-winning goal with 18.9 seconds left in regulation in the 2007 National Championship game in St. Louis on April 7, 2007. Since then, Boston College defeated Michigan State, 5-2, in Grand Forks, N.D., at the 2011 Ice Breaker Tournament to start the season. The Eagles have not played Michigan State in East Lansing since BC and MSU split a series on Nov. 16 and Nov. 17, 1990. The two storied programs have carried out a tradition of meeting one another in the NCAA Tournament, playing each other seven-consecutive times from March 17, 1984, to March 26, 1989. The last five decisions have gone to the opposing team with BC’s last victory coming in the most recent meeting on Oct. 7, 2011. Friday marks head coach Jerry York’s first contests against current head coach of the Spartans, Tom Anastos.

SPARTY ONMichigan State will continues its path through Hockey East on Friday night after splitting with New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center, 4-3 and 2-5, on Nov. 7-8, respectively last weekend. Prior to their trip to Durham, N.H., the Spartans have taken on UMass Lowell (2-1 loss), Boston University (1-0 loss) and a pair against Massachusetts (5-3 win and 4-3 loss). The only club MSU has faced not part of Hockey East was a split decision against Ferris State on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 as the Spartans lost 1-0 on Friday and backed it with a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. The Spartans are led by senior Matt Berry (5-3-8) and sophomore Mackenzie MacEachern (3-5-8), both tied for 41st in the country in scoring as they each average a point per game. Berry’s rate of 0.62 goals per game is tied for 18th in the nation. Third-year goaltender Jake Hildebrand ranks 34th in the NCAA with a 2.40 goals against average and 40th in save percentage (.912) as he backs a defense that is tied for 25th in college hockey, giving up 2.50 goals per game. The Spartans’ offense is tied for 39th, scoring at a clip of 2.38 goals per game. Through eight games (3-5-0), MSU prides itself on its 10th-ranked penalty kill (29-of-32 – 90.6 percent).

POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNTScoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College has scored at least one goal or more in each of its four victories thus far. Each time the Eagles have been denied on the power play, BC has lost the game. In all, Boston College has converted five of its 46 chances at a rate of 10.9 percent which ranks 42nd in the country right now.

ANOTHER SEASON…ANOTHER BENCHMARKThe Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach of Boston College, Jerry York, won his 500th game behind the Eagles’ bench in only 811 games after a 2-1 victory at Denver on Oct. 31, 2014. York is in his 21st season as BC bench boss. York continues to maintain the label as college hockey’s winninges coach all-time, possessing a 967-582-102 mark in his 43rd season as a college hockey head coach.

SNEAKING UP ON SNOOKSJohn “Snooks” Kelley, Boston College head coach for 36 years from 1932 to 1942 and 1946 to 1972, owns the most wins as Eagles’ head with coach with an overall record of 501-244-15. If the Eagles defeat Michigan State, York ties Kelley for the most wins ever at BC. To date, York’s mark on The Heights is 500-247-68.

- Jerry York won his 500th-career game at Boston College in his 811th try on Oct. 31, 2014, in a 2-1 win at Denver #InYorkWeTrust

- Jerry York is one victory shy from tying Snooks Kelley as the winningest coach all-tme at Boston College at 501 #WeAreBC

- Ryan Fitzgerald is fifth in the country in goal scoring, averaging 0.88 goals per game #WeAreBC

- Boston College has won the last nine meetings against Harvard by a +27 goal differential #WeAreBC

NOVEMBER RAINBoston College has not started the month of November 0-4 since Jerry York’s first season as head coach during the 1994-95 season.

REMEMBER THE LAST TIME BC LOST THREE GAMES? The last time Boston College lost four consecutive games, you would have to look back to the 2003-04 season when the Eagles lost to New Hampshire (3-2 - Feb. 28), Maine (3-0 and 3-4, March 5-6) and Boston University (3-2, March 11). That season, the Eagles went on to compete in the 2004 Frozen Four, in Boston, eventually falling to Maine in the national semifinal, 2-1, on April 8, 2004.

SHUTOUT STREAK STOPPED UPBoston College was shutout at Connecticut on Nov. 5 in the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and the Huskies. The Eagles owned the longest streak in the country of scoring at least one goal in 106 games with their last shutout transpiring on Jan. 13, 2012, at Massachusetts. In 813 games behind Boston College’s bench, Jerry York has been held scoreless only 20 times total.

OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHTThe Eagles scored six goals in back-to-back games on Oct. 18 and Oct. 24 against RIT and Colorado College, in that order. The last time Boston College combined for 12 goals in two games was last season when the Eagles defeated Boston University, 6-4, and Maine, 7-2, back-to-back on Jan. 17-18, 2014. Under Jerry York, Boston College has combined for 12 goals or more over the span of two games all but three times in a single season. The only seasons BC has never scored 12 or more goals in back-to-back games was 1994-95 (first season), 2003-04 and 2012-13.

HOCKEY HALL CALLThree members of the Boston College hockey family were enshrined as part of the 2014 Class of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame, including Jeff Farkas ('00), William Hogan (‘33) and Marty Reasoner (‘98). Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist and ranks sixth all-time in scoring (190). Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at Boston College, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors and helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998.

BABY BIRD(S)Rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the second-youngest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player.

EagleHallCALLOne-third of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame - Class of 2014 - was made up from the men’s ice hockey contingent. These three Eagles were enshrined into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 17, and were recognized at halftime of the Eagles’ football game against Clemson.

WERESTILLNOTINGBC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICENot only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

CHANGING OF THE GUARDFollowing yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 444-248-73 record for a league-best 62.8 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East.

SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINKBC celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 288-111-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748).

#TEAMDREWBROWNHockey East is all about competition and brotherhood. Providence College’s Drew Brown will miss this season as he battles Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. For those that would like to help donate to Brown’s cause, the fundraising campaign is called “Dropping Mitts Against Cancer”. More information is located here: gofundme.com/93da50

Jeff Farkas played four years on the Eagles’ hockey team. In 2000, Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist, and received the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award given by the Pike’s Peak Hockey Club to the team’s MVP. During his incredible career, the Eagles finished with an exemplary 99-52-14 record with two Hockey East Championships and three Frozen Four appearances.

The sport of ice hockey at Boston College - as we know it today - would not exist without the efforts of William M. Hogan. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at BC, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. When the team gathered at Boston Arena for its first varsity game, the players unanimously voted Hogan as team captain.

Marty Reasoner played three years on the Eagles’ hockey team. Leading the team in scoring in each of his seasons, Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, and twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors. He helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998. Reasoner represented the U.S. in the 1996 and 1997 World Junior Championships, and the 2002, 2003 and 2006 World Championships.

BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 458 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (455) and North Dakota (451) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .627 (444-249-73) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 967-582-102 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program. In recognition of Jerry’s accomplishments and to ensure that the future of BC remains strong for years to come, the Schillers decided to permanently etch their legacy with BC Hockey.
