1 INTRODUCTIONBecause language-related phenomena are central to many aspects of human life,individualswhopossess sophisticated knowledge of language and linguisticswork in awide range of professional and academic fields. Applied linguistics, an interdisciplinaryenterprise, encompasses a correspondingly wide range of aims and concerns. BostonUniversity’sgraduateprogramsinAppliedLinguisticsofferasolidfoundationinlinguistictheoryandpractice,andofferopportunitiesforstudyinavarietyofareas.StudentsintheMAandPhDprogramsapplyknowledgeaboutlinguistictheory,description,andanalysistoaparticularareaofstudy.

1.1 ThisHandbookThe Graduate StudentHandbook is intended to provide a guide to students in the MAprogramthroughouttheircourseofstudy.Itmayalsobeofusetostudentsconsideringapplyingto theMAprogram;wearenotcurrentlyacceptingnewstudents intothePhDprogram,butcurrentPhDstudentsmayalsofindsomeofthisinformationtobeuseful.This handbook is intended to augment the information available in the annual onlineGraduateSchool (GRS)Bulletin:http://www.bu.edu/academics/bulletin/.However, in caseswhere the information in this document and the GRS bulletin might appear to be inconflict, the GRS bulletin serves as the final legal authority. 3 THEMAINAPPLIEDLINGUISTICS3.1 IntroductionBostonUniversityoffersan8course(32credit)MasterofArtsdegreeadministeredbytheLinguistics Program. The program offers a strong grounding in linguistics, and providesopportunities forMA students to pursue awide range of interests. 3.6.3 CHECKINGTHATYOURREQUIREMENTSHAVEBEENFULFILLEDSeveralweeksbeforetheendofthesemester,theGraduateSchoolwillsendaformtotheDGS, asking whether you have finished all of your requirements for the MA degree,including the 8 required courses completed with a grade of B- or better, the languagerequirement, and theMAProject (whichmusthavebeensubmitted to theprogramofficealong with the MA Project Approval form; see the Appendix). This means that all thenecessarydocumentationmustappearonyouronlinetranscriptorhavebeensubmittedtothe Program Office. You are responsible for making sure that all your documents are inorder in time for graduation. 5.3 GradesandCoursework

5.3.1 COURSEDROPSANDWITHDRAWALSStudentsmaydropacourseearlyinthesemesterwithoutpenalty.Studentswhowithdrawfromacourseafterthedropdeadlinereceiveagradeof‘W’(andnocredit)forthecourse.Ifthecourseisrequired,thestudentmusttakethecourseinalatersemesterandpaytuitionagain.Seehttp://www.bu.edu/reg/calendars/semester/forspecificsaboutdeadlinesforaddingand dropping classes in any given semester. Studentsareexpectedtomaintainsatisfactoryacademicprogress.StudentswhoseGPAdropsbelow3.0orwhoreceivefailinggrades(i.e.,gradeslowerthanBminusorpermanentIncompletes)inmorethantwo4-creditcoursesareatriskforremovalfromtheprogramatthediscretionoftheGraduateSchool.Studentsarethereforestronglyencouragedtoavoidaccumulating ‘I’ grades and to complete coursework within the time limits. 5.3.3 TRANSFERSUptotwocoursesmaybetransferredinfromworkatanotheruniversity,aslongas(a)thecontentof thosecoursescanbeshowntobeequivalenttoacoreorspecializationcourse,and (b) those courseswere not used to satisfy a degree requirement. If the course to betransferredwas takenwhen thestudentwasanundergraduate, itmusthavebeenduringthesenioryear.Eachtransferredcoursereleasesthestudentfromboththerequirementfortakingthatcourseandthecreditsearnedforthecourse.Studentsmustprovidesupportingdocumentation required by the Graduate School to be awarded transfer credit. Note thatBoston University does not accept transfer credits from Harvard Extension. See the GRSBulletinforfurtherdetailsabouttransferofcredits.If a student proposes a transfer to take the place of a core course, the student mustdemonstratethatthecontentoftheclassiscomparabletotheclassitisintendedtoreplace;theapprovaloftheBUfacultymemberwhonormallyteachesthecorecourseisrequired.Ifthe student proposes a transfer to take the place of an elective, the content need not beduplicated at Boston University, but the course should be advanced enough to be areasonableelective,andthesubstitutionshouldbeapprovedbytheDGS.5.3.4 WAIVERSIf a student has already taken a core course at Boston University (for example as anundergraduateorMAstudent), then that requirementwillbewaived,i.e., the studentwillnot have to take that course (see p. 28). However, the student must substitute anothercourseforthatcorerequirement. Inotherwords,allstudentsmustcompleteatotalof32graduatecreditstoreceivetheMAdegree,whetherornottheyhavehadanyoftheircorerequirementswaived.

5.4 AdvisingYour academic advisor can helpwith bureaucratic requirements, such as approving yourcourseselectionsandprovidingyouradvisingcodeatthestartofeachsemester,butmostimportantly,youradvisorcanprovideyouwithguidanceinrelationtoyourprogressintheprogramandthedevelopmentofyourownwork,includingthechoiceofanMAProject.5.4.1 ADVISORSBeforeyourfirstsemesterintheprogramyouwillbeassignedanacademicadvisorbasedonourknowledgeofyourinterestsatthetimeyouenteredtheprogram.However,students’interests often are not well-defined when they enter the program and as your interestsdevelopandyoutakemoreclasses,youmaychangeyourfocus.Youhavearighttochangeacademicadvisorsatanytime.Ifyouwanttochangeadvisors,

youshoulddiscussthiswiththeDGS.Somestudentsareconcernedthattheiradvisorswillbeoffendedorhurtiftheywishtoworkwithsomeoneelse.Thisshouldnotbeaconcern.Youracademicadvisorhasaprofessionalrelationshipwithyouandunderstandsverywell

Graduate Studies, an appropriate faculty member to serve as first reader for their MAproject(if this issomeoneother thantheacademicadvisor),aswellasadditionalreadersmostappropriatetothesubjectmatterdiscussedandanalyzedintheirwork.5.4.2 WORKINGWITHADVISORSANDREADERSFacultyadvisorsandreadersoncommitteesarecommittedtosupportingyoureffortstodevelop as a scholar. However, it is your responsibility tomaintain communicationwiththemabout theprogressofyourwork.Forexample,youshouldtry tocheck inwithyouradvisoratleastafewtimeseachsemester,particularlyifyoudonothaveaclasswiththatperson.IfyouareworkingonanMAproject,youshouldbeincontactwithyouradvisororfirstreaderatleasteveryotherweek.Pleasenote,however, that facultyaregenerallynotavailableover intersessionor in thesummer.Duringthesummer, facultymembersareexpectedtousetheir timetocarryoutresearchandpreparepublications.Whileitmaybethecasethatanadvisororreaderwillbewillingtoworkwithyouoverthesummer,youcannotassumetheiravailability.Therefore,youshouldplanyourstudiesandwritingsoastomakebestuseofyourowntimeand thatofyouradvisorandreaders.Clearcommunicationand jointplanning is theway toaccomplish this smoothly.Youhavea right toaskyouradvisorandreadersabouttheiravailabilityandaboutexpectationsconcerninghowlongitwilltakethemtorespondto your work. Withdrawalfromacoursewitha“W”gradeorchangingacourseforcredittoanauditwillresult in the rescinding of financial aid funds used toward that course.Thestudentwillthenberesponsibleforpayingforthatcourse.7.3.1 RESEARCHANDTEACHINGASSISTANTSHIPSOccasionallytheuniversityprovidesfundingtoourprogramforateachingassistantship.The funding levels for suchpositionsvary. Facultymemberswish to encourageall of ourstudents to gain teaching experience, but the rarity of such positions ensures that onecannot depend upon such funding, unfortunately. 10 PROGRAMACTIVITIES10.1 BUConferenceonLanguageDevelopmentTheBostonUniversityConferenceonLanguageDevelopment(BUCLD)wasstartedin1976by students and faculty in the Psycholinguistics Program (a historical antecedent of theProgram in Applied Linguistics). The Conference has become one of the best knownconferencesonlanguagedevelopmentintheworldandtakesplaceinearlyNovembereachyear.TheConferencedrawsover500people fromallover theU.S.andaroundtheworld,and includes about 150 papers in such areas as theoretical approaches to languageacquisition, second language acquisition, language disorders, and other topics related tolanguage development. The Conference is a non-profit organization and is funded by themoneytakenineachyearattheConference,currentlysupplementedbygrantsprovidedbytheNationalScienceFoundation.BUCLD is run each year by students in the Linguistics Program, with the guidance offaculty advisors, currently Profs. PaulHagstrom, SudhaArunachalam, and Charles Chang.Planningfortheconferencegoesonallyear.Twoorthreestudentsserveasorganizersofthe conference, six to seven as committee chairs, and the rest of the students help in avariety ofways throughout the year and at the conference itself. The organization of theconference is a year-long project that requires the participation of all students in theLinguisticsprograminordertorunsmoothly.Allstudentsareexpectedtocontributetotheorganizationoftheconferencethroughouttheyearandparticularlytotheconferenceitself(by,forexample,staffingtheregistrationdesk,orchairingsessions).Session-chairingalonerequiresapproximately40volunteers,soeveryonecounts!Inquiriesabouthowtohelpwiththe conference may be made by email ([email protected]). 10.2 ColloquiaYou should plan to attend the Linguistics Colloquia and other events organized by theProgram. In addition, the Boston area is home to a number of prestigious linguisticsprograms,manyofwhichhosteventsduringtheacademicyear. BesuretocheckoutthelinguisticsprogramwebsitesatHarvardandMITfornewsaboutevents.

10.3 Research-RelatedActivitiesImportant:Ifyourresearchinvolveshumansubjects,pleaseseethecriticalinformationinSection6.Inrecentsemesters,graduatestudentshaveorganizedtheirownweeklyresearchforum.This forumis informalandentirely independent fromtheprogram,althoughsomefacultymembersoften attend.
