President’s Comments October 2015

Have you ever agreed to volunteer for something a couple of weeks in advance, and a couple of days prior to the event dreaded the idea of volunteering for it? Even thought of reasons for getting out of it? Well, it just happened to me. This was an event that was family related and I tried every way to get out of it. I even tried to get my husband to handle it. That didn’t work! This event took most of my entire day! I like you, usually have a full day of things that need to get done and this day was no exception! Now that it is over, I am truly blessed to have been a part of this event! I spent 6 hours with an individual that I love even more because of giving my time to her! I laughed with her, reminisced about times gone by, learned a lot, grew from the knowledge she shared with me, and the time I spent with her that day—I wouldn’t trade for anything! Standing in the store’s lighting aisle can be confusing if not overwhelming. Armed with less than an electrical engineer background, the simple lightbulb decision has quickly evolved into shelf-side research project ending in a starling price analysis. Once you crack the code, only then can you focus on what really matters—how much you’re willing to spend and how bright a bulb you need. Would you like to learn the truthful facts amidst misleading advertisements and company profit motives? If you are looking for direction when replac-ing that burned out 60 watt incandescent, join UK Extension Associate for Residential Energy, Gerald Hash and FCS Agent Diana Doggett, at The Best and Brightest Home Light-ing Workshop on October 15 at 6:00 pm at the Bourbon Coun-ty Extension Office. This program is open to everyone! It was designed to be a lesson training, however all Homemakers and general public are invited. Please call the office to sign up. This will help us in planning for space and materials. Mark it on your calendar—OCTOBER 15, 6:00 PM

There are six suggested areas for Homemakers lessons mapped out on page 6. They are:

1) Housing 2) Foods & Nutrition 3) Clothing 4) Health & Wellness 5) Financial Management 6) Family Life If you want to add areas feel free to do so. These are the recommended ones but we can be creative in our adaptation. There have been negative (and a few positive) comments about the lessons over the past few years. Put your thinking caps on and think of what topics you as a club would like additional information/training. This is your chance to speak up and be heard! Please note that this selection is not up to ONLY Bourbon County Homemakers. Bourbon County’s compiled list of suggested topics must be sent to the Bluegrass Area Homemakers by October 30. There the sugges-tions will be taken into consideration for planning 2016-2017 lessons. This is a very short turnaround time, so please give it some thought, discuss it with your members and turn page 6 into Bourbon County Extension office no later than October 29. You can scan and email the complet-ed form to [email protected] or take a picture and text it to 859-533-9381. Really looking forward to great feedback!

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND GIVE SOME TIME AND CAREFUL CONSIDERATION TO SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE HOMEMAKERS LESSONS.

REMEMBER THE 2015 ANNUAL MEETING HELPING HANDS AUCTION? Have you followed up on your purchase? If not—It is not too late. Most did not have expiration dates. Elizabeth Rankin and Earlene Arnett are shown here at working on Elizabeth’s second quilting project. The pillow was their first. project. The picture was taken at Bird Song Quilting and Fabric Shop in Georgetown. Great place owned by former Bourbon County Schools principal, Stella Crutcher. New friendships, renewed talents and great fun. Take pictures of your projects and share!

AGENT’s CORNER

I am so excited about all the support and enthusiasm that I have experienced with the Bourbon County Homemakers in the past few months. There are still two clubs that I need to visit to share ideas and to hear requests. I got to visit with the Gingerbread Friends at their first 2015-16 meeting in Sep-tember. I left that meeting so excited about some of the things that group is doing. Yes they may be small in numbers but their enthusiasm and creativi-ty was impressive as well as contagious. I left that meeting with additional possibilities of activities “dancing in my head”! I went to the meeting to help them with planning and left the meeting with them helping me with planning. I LOVE it! During my visits with clubs I have discovered that there are many creative service projects and activities going of which I have not been aware. We definitely are going to be doing some “tooting of our own horns” this year. Bourbon County Homemakers are such an asset to our community. I love my job and am proud to be a part of such a giving organization. Keep up the good work. Keep me informed and let me know what I can do to help! Kay

ANYONE NEEDING A RIDE TO THE AREA ANNUAL MEETING? Kay is planning to attend and will be glad to have the company! There may be others that would like to

carpool as well. Please call the office to make arrangements. NOTE: Deadline for registration is October 1.
