Introduction

Dear Alumni and Friends of Bourgade Catholic,

Bourgade Catholic High School is deeply grateful to the people, including faculty, Alumni, students, staff, and School Advisory Board members who gave so generously of their time, insight, and resources through the 2009 – 2010 school year. This generosity creates an immediate and personal impact enriching the lives of every student, family and faculty member associated with Bourgade Catholic.

This year’s Annual Report highlights the accomplishment and progress made as a result of your strong belief in the mission of Bourgade Catholic High School. August 210 we welcomed 132 young men and women into Bourgade Catholic. One of the largest freshmen classes in this decade. Two Bourgade Catholic coaches, Jinhee Huff (Softball) and Greg Henke (Baseball) were named Coaches of the Year for Metro II A. Our Active Bourgade Catholic Club serves at St. Vincent DePaul kitchen twice a month. Our school built three homes for less fortunate families in Mexico. Two seniors were named National Merit Spanish scholars and the class of 2010 received a record amount of scholarship money $6,308,860, going to 49 of the graduating students. It is clear that Bourgade Catholic continues to make progress.

We remain a community that is committed to the lasting values of Catholic education. We believe it gives our graduates the strongest foothold possible for a successful future. With that commitment, though, comes the ever-growing challenge of making attendance at Bourgade Catholic a reality for all who desire a Catholic education. It takes a great deal of resources to provide the level of education and range of experiences that make a Bourgade Catholic education what it has developed into over the last 49 years. As we prepare to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary, we need your support by making a gift to our Learn. Lead. Serve. Annual Giving program. Your commitment to the school’s core values – becoming spiritually centered Christians, lifelong learners, effective communicators, and globally-aware citizens allows our students, faculty, staff, and parents to live our mission.

BC Launches Eaglevision Eaglevision, a BC student run news program, began during the 2009-10 school year. Under the direction of Mr. Kevin Woods, 13 students produced five-minute taped announcements that aired every Tuesday and Thursday before lunch. Eaglevision provides students the opportunity to get real life experience with new technology and equipment, spend time on camera, and learn the many skills associated with broadcast journalism. The Eaglevision Team utilizes the Media room in the Student Services Building, a product of the Faith in the Future campaign.

Work Study Program Assists Students & Bourgade CatholicA new Work Study program, introduced to Bourgade Catholic during the school year, provides students the opportunity to take an active role in fulfilling the financial responsibility for their tuition and give back to the Bourgade Catholic community in a positive and constructive manner. Before or after school, students assist the administration and staff by cleaning classrooms, picking up litter, washing windows, mopping floors and other activities to help keep Bourgade Catholic’s campus exceptional.

Bourgade Catholic High School strives to be a student-centered learning community where each unique individual is welcomed and encouraged to grow in his or her relationship with God, others and a constantly changing world. Enriched by faith and the Christian tradition, we are committed to providing a rigorous academic program that prepares students of all learning styles for higher education. Our faculty embraces innovative methods to educate; our students continue to master the skills necessary for success in life.

National Merit ScholarsCongratulations to Seniors Rodrigo Silva and Joshua Gonzales, National Merit Scholarship Commended Students. Both scored in the top 5 percent in the country on their PSAT tests (out of 1.5 million students who took the test). Joshua was also named a National Hispanic Scholar. Congratulations!

Excellence for BCHS BandOur BCHS Concert Band received an “Excellence” ranking when performing in the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors 2010 Area Concert Festival. This is the second highest ranking possible and marks the highest score the Concert Band has ever received.

Determination & Hard Work Pays Off for Class of 2010Preparation, attention to detail, and hard work paid off for forty-nine members of the Class of 2010. Based on their outstanding academic record, community service, and involvement in extracurricular activities at Bourgade Catholic, these students earned a record $6,308,860 in scholarship monies to attend college upon their graduation.

Transformative Education

Eagles EyrieThe Eagle’s Eyrie, Bourgade Catholic’s student published newspaper, was awarded First Place by the National Scholastic Press Association in the 2009-2010 academic year. NSPA also awarded a Mark of Distinction for Leadership to The Eagle’s Eyrie. Cori Zimny, 2010 graduate, served as Editor-in-Chief last year, Seniors Danielle Bryant and Adilene Rodriguez, sophomore Susan Hidalgo, and cartoonists Kaitlen Smith and Brenna Jackson were also major contributors to the newspaper and to its winning these awards.

Leslie Nolander ’78 accepted the 2010 Alumni Spirit Award during half time of this year’s Homecoming Football game. The Alumni Spirit Award is presented annually to a graduate for their commitment and dedication to Bourgade Catholic. Leslie has been an integral part of the Quest for Excellence Auction over the years; she serves on the Marketing Committee, and volunteers for a variety of other events throughout the year. Not only is Leslie an Alum of BC, she is also a current parent.

AuctionBourgade Catholic celebrated the 2010 Quest for Excellence Dinner & Auction on Saturday, March 6th. The theme for the evening was “The American Dream” and the BC community paid tribute to Terry and Linda Woods for their commitment and dedication to carrying on the mission of Bourgade Catholic. The event was a tremendous success, raising over $75,000 for the school.

Bourgade Catholic would like to extend our gratitude towards the Catholic Tuition Organization of the Diocese of Phoenix for their remarkable support during the Fiscal Year 2009-2010. Bourgade Catholic was the recipient of over $497,560 in tuition assistance from CTODP, which benefited 70% of BC students.

Four More into Hallowed HallsThe Bourgade Catholic Hall of Fame welcomed four new members on Friday, September 17, 2010 at the 2nd annual Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction Ceremony. The 2010 Inductees included (from left to right) Mr. Greg Henke, Mrs. Julie Pike-Estfan ‘84, Dr. William Chavira ‘88, and Mr. Michael Cosgrove ‘69 (not pictured). These outstanding individuals have, through their accomplishments, brought honor and distinction to themselves and the Bourgade Catholic community. For the 12th consecutive year,

Bourgade Catholic High School was

the top school with participation

in the Nolan Ryan Division of the

United Blood Drive Challenge.

The school was recognized in the

pre-game show of the Arizona

Diamondbacks game at Chase Field

last spring, receiving our 12th banner

to add to the collection in Tepsic

Gymnasium. Bourgade Catholic

is the only school in all of Arizona

with the complete collection.

Bourgade Catholic students continue to make an impact locally when the Active Bourgade Christian group travels to St. Vincent de Paul every 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. The ABC group assists in a variety of ways, including the serving of warm meals to families in the St. Vincent de Paul family dining room.

BC Baseball Team Crowned State Champs The Varsity Baseball Team notched it’s fourth state championship in school history when they defeated Camp Verde 5-2 in the State Championship. This year marked the third consecutive final four appearance in the state tournament, and the first title since they won it in 1988. In addition, Senior Eric Martinez was named 2A Player of the Year, and Coach Greg Henke was named 2A Coach of the Year.

The Bourgade Catholic Girls’ Athletic Program was the recipient of the Tony Komadina Award, presented to ONE school in the 3A-1A conference that has outstanding achievements in girls’ athletics.

Bourgade Catholic Athletics soared higher than ever during the 2009-2010 school year, riding a wave of success never seen before on campus. The list of accolades include a multitude of individual awards, exceptional team accomplishments, and impressive recognition from the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Torres Wins Wrestling State Championship

Senior Emilio Torres was crowned the 2A State Wrestling Champion in the 160lb weight class when he defeated Pima’s Klinton Whitmere, ending his season with a 49-1 record. Torres marks the second state wrestling champion in the past three years for the Golden Eagle wrestling program.

BC Receives Tony Komadina Award

The Golden Eagle Swim Team finished their season in amazing fashion at the 1-3A State Championships when they broke 11 school records last fall. The Boys team finished in 5th Place, and the Girls in 9th Place overall in the state. Senior Jordan Lemos, junior Ray Caccavale, sophomore Bryce Henderson, and freshman Jake Lambros won state medals when they placed 4th in the 400 Free Relay.

JinHee Huff Named Coach of the Year in SoftballCongratulations to JinHee Huff for being named Coach of the Year, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to a 15-2 record and finishing #4 in the state power rankings.
