OUR CRUISE SHIP - ms Prinsendam

Within Holland America’s impressive fleet, the ms Prinsendam is in a class all its own. Designed to explore the remote corners of the world in elegance and style, the ms Prinsendam is Holland America’s most intimate ship. Originally built as the legendary Royal Viking Sun, she has been lovingly restored and enhanced. All staterooms have been fully upgraded or completely rebuilt. At 38,000 tons, the ms Prinsendam carries a maximum of 835 passengers in spacious comfort. Five distinctly different dining venues are available: the classic La Fontaine Dining Room, the casual Lido, the Pinnacle Grill and the Canaletto Restaurant with its enclosed covered Wintergarden . Eight different lounges are also available, providing delightful spaces to relax, to have a quiet drink, or to be entertained by music or a lively show. The Explorations Café, offers an extensive library, internet café and coffee bar, as well as the beautiful new Culinary Arts Centre, which provides cooking classes and presentations. Other venues include a full-size theatre offering first-run movies, a casino, a card room and the superb Greenhouse Spa and fitness centre. Luxurious accommodations await us - staterooms feature two lower beds (most of which can convert to a large king-size bed), plush pillow-top mattresses, fine Egyptian cottons, terry-cloth robes, a private bathroom, individually-controlled air conditioning, a telephone, and ample closet space. PORTS OF CALL

Ljmuiden (Amsterdam), Netherlands: Amsterdam would not be the same without its gabled houses crowding right up to the edges of the canals that lattice the city. The town has always been in tune with the water, from the first land reclamation projects in the 10th century through its gilded ascension in the 16th century on the backs of its trading ships to its identity today as a centre of global commerce and innovation. Zeebrugge (Brussels), Belgium: From this busy port city, you may want to tour the canal-laced called Brugge. Brussels is particularly known for being home of the European Union and Ghent is a Mecca for chocolate lovers. Cherbourg (Normandy), France: The town is pastille-bright in the resonant 1964 musical "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg," which marked the major-film debut of Catherine Deneuve. The real-life town of Cherbourg is no less a delight. Visit Place General de Gaulle, where cruise travellers can find great cafés or try a delicious “plateau de fruits de mer” (seafood platter). Shop the boutiques on Rue Tour Carrée and Rue de la Paix. Hike up to Fort du Roule to explore the grounds and catch the view toward England. Then stop by the Musée de la Liberation for a bit of local history.

Bordeaux, France: Bordeaux is in the heart of France's wine country, just a short drive from the lush vineyards and picturesque chateaux that produce the Graves, Medoc and St. Emilion grapes. Tours and tastings are available, of course.

Bilbao, Spain: Bilbao is the site of the stunning Guggenheim Museum, an eruption of light and titanium designed by Frank Gehry. Nearby is also the ancient Santander, a fanciful belle époque casino.

Lisbon, Portugal: Lisbon was for many years Europe's main gateway to the world. Ships captained by Portuguese explorers like Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan searched the globe, hauling treasure home and making Lisbon a world power. The Portuguese capital is situated on a wide bay where the Tagus River meets the Atlantic and the white facades of the city lead uphill to the iconic Castelo de São Jorge. Other landmarks include the World Heritage Sites of Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, both built in Lisbon's native Manueline architectural style.

Huelva (Seville), Spain: The Moorish palace started as a fort, one of the largest Roman Catholic Cathedrals in the world used to be a mosque and The Renaissance archive contains the annals of the Spanish in the New World. Those three are UNESCO World Heritage sites built in the Mudejar style, a Muslim aesthetic that developed under Christian rule. You may want to walk the narrow lanes of the Jewish Quarter, the expanse of the Plaza de España, or the halls of the Museo de Bellas Artes. Then it will probably be time for tapas.

Gibraltar, British Territory: Geography claims it for Iberia, geology for the Jurassic, mythology for Hercules, and geopolitics for Great Britain. Gibraltar is a peninsula that juts off the southern end of Iberia and whose dominant feature is a 1,398-foot-high cave-riddled hunk of limestone that has played a dominant role in the Western psyche for millennia. While it is a British overseas territory, its culture draws from Andalusia, Portugal, Malta, Morocco, and India. The upper slopes are covered in olive, pine and bouquets of the endemic Gibraltar candytuft.

CT RATING 1 - Leisurely: This cruise is suitable for all passengers who meet our basic criteria for group travel.

The Barbary apes (macaques, really) cavort through it all, popular despite their tendency toward thievery.

Malaga, Spain: The walls of the Phoenician city are visible in the basement of the Picasso Museum. The best-preserved Moorish citadel in Spain is located next to the Roman theatre, which was rediscovered in 1951. The nearby caves of Nerja provided refuge to humans 30,000 years ago and modern tourists nowadays alight along the Costa Del Sol during the eight-month-long summer season. Visit the old castles and museums or simply relax at the beaches, chewing some scenery with a Malaga sweet wine and a plate of tapas.

Castellon de la Plana, Spain: Wander around the Old Town and visit the impressive Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria la Mayor. Allow yourself some shopping time at the market and contemplate the bel tower El Fadri, a unique octagonal building built in the 16th Century.

Barcelona, Spain: Barcelona effuses the ancient, the modernist, and the Gaudi. Legend has it the city was founded by Hercules 400 years before the founding of Rome. Whatever the truth, the city today is a global capital of commerce, fashion, culture, and sunshine (with about 300 days of it a year). Extend your cruise with a stopover in this enticing city. Start with a walk down Las Ramblas, the glorious tree-shaded thoroughfare at the heart of the city. Then claim a patch of sand on one of the city beaches and most of all, see what visionary architect Antoni Gaudi wrought. Seven of his creations have been honored as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including La Sagrada Familia, the Park Guell, and Casa Mila.

The delightful Portuguese capital city, Lisbon
