After a lengthy battle over licensing the former Empire Club has finally re-opened it’s doors as the Orange Rooms, the first new licence to be issued in almost 8 years.

The new venue has had a spectacular 3 floor refurbishment with the Orange Room’s trademark retro chic vibe throughout. Sporting an outside terrace, a unique ‘ski-lodge’ penthouse bar and a basement level club area decked in exposed brick work and aptly named ‘The Bunker’.

The venue is now open for business and serving seven days a week from midday until late.

By day punters can visit the American Diner for locally sourced, handmade & home cooked gourmet burgers & hotdogs and with salads & wraps for the lightest of lunches, you don’t need to be a raging carnivore to enjoy the grub.

At night the focus shifts to award winning cocktails, expertly crafted by the Orange Room’s in-house mixolo-gists & intoxicologists (their words). The Drinks menu features over forty different cocktails, coupled with an unrivalled premium spirit collection, there’ll undoubtedly be something on offer to tickle your tastebuds.

ROCK REGENERATION

BOURNEMOUTH MUSIC | OCTOBER 2013

September was such a big month for gigs in Bournemouth and unless you had left the area or gone into hibernation you cannot have failed to have noticed everything that was going on. w w w . r o c k - r e g e n e r a t i o n . c o . u kParty in the Park on the Ashley Cross green was definitely a weekend of two halves with the Saturday producing sunshine with blues skies and the Sunday was full of grey skies with heavy rain showers. Bands of the weekend were by far Empire Affair and The Frequency who both performed like they owned the stage thrilling audiences with their big tunes. The three day Boscombe Community Fair also suffered from the elements and attendances were down on previous years because of this. The large team of volunteers despite this did a fantastic job of making sure things ran smoothly with some great performances coming from acts like Voodoo Vegas, The Sporadics, Mischa & His Merry Man, Fearne and local troubadour Andy Stock who put a local super group of rising stars together especially for the event.

CHINNERS

Dorset Music Award winners in 2012 Peace, Love & Gloves returned to the live circuit at the Winchester with a typically chaotic gig which included a batch of new songs that really shows some nice progres-sion and growing confidence. If you would like to join their fans the ‘Gloves and Glovettes’ at their next gig you will find them at the Music Box in Salisbury on 25th October with Lyrical Monsoon.

Also at the Anvil in September was the return of Draw Me Ugly, a superb local band who most local people won’t of heard of yet. A four piece with some amazing potential and an abundance of great origi-nal songs that really inspire, a sort of garage rock band with some tasty funk elements. You can check them out at their next gig at Chaplin’s Cellar bar on the 18th October.

The 2013 Oxjam Takeover takes place in Bournemouth on the 19th October starting at 2pm over several venues that will include the Inferno, Sound Circus and The Anvil. There is an abundance of local talent signed up to perform at the event including Mischa & His Merri Men, The Mother Ukers, Aaron Gregory, Tim Somerfield and host of others still to be confirmed. The slogan of Oxjam is ‘local music, global impact’ and that’s exactly what the team of very dedicated people are trying to do. Entry to all the venues can be gained by purchasing a wristband for just £5 which will give you access to all venues participating, go to http://www.facebook.com/bournemouthoxjam for all the latest news on who is playing where. The event in the past has raised thousands of pounds for the very worthy cause of Oxfam and with every help and support this years should be no different.

Belgian bun or apple turnover...?Belgian bun!

What’s the best thing about touring?Living in a van with 4 other smelly lads who are also best mates!

Up or down?Always up!

What do you want to be when you grow up?When I grow up, id like to be... anything but Morrisey.

Who has the biggest feet in the band?Biggest feet has to be tom (probably)

Who has the worst tour bus habit?Worst habbit probably goes to Seany with his vapourous butt

If you were a crisp (chips) flavour, what flavour would you be?McCoys, any flavour

If you suddenly became the biggest band in the world who would you get to support you?I’d like to say Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park as an awesome tour support

Tell us a joke….What do you call a blind dinosaur.... do-you-think-he-saurus

Would you rather shrink a foot or grow two feet taller?Would like to say grow a few more feet?

Why should we come and see your show? You should all come to see us at a show to see how important a live show is to us, we all thrive on it!

Catch Hildamay with Steak Number Eight at live at The Anvil on 1st November

The Music team took up the challenge to attend as many festivals as possible this summer! Here are our Festival Round Up reviews!

The answer was, quite a lot indeed. Although we caught a bit of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobious Pip, Labrinth and DJ Fresh the music seemed somehow secondary to the multitude of hands on activities and places to explore, had we arrived sooner we could have signed up for one of a number of workshops run by performers and learned how to dance, juggle or even make instruments out of vegetables. This festival is most definitely aimed squarely at families with children, indeed I would have felt most uncomfortable engaging in the level of er, refreshment that I normally attain at a festival but since I had my son with me this was not a problem. A very happy day was had watching the motorbikes roar round the wall of death and enjoying an indeterminate and wallet destroying number of rides on the helter

KAI HARRIS

I have been meaning to visit Camp Bestival for years, I was only able to make it down for one day but, armed with my trusty 5 year old side-kick, we headed to Lulworth Castle to see just how much we could cram into 8 hours.

skelter. Just as it looked like the nipper had finally run out of steam we’re treated to an finalé featuring a light show and projections right onto the castle itself with a cracking good firework display to finish. I can’t wait to go for the whole weekend next year. I’ll leave it to my son to sum up in one word... ‘AWESOME!’

festivalround up

Well it may be a mission to get to and from and it may have rained on us quite a bit but this year’s Bestival certainly cemented Rob & Josie Da Bank’s annual fiesta into our festival calendar. The Isle of Wight based festival reached its 10 year anniversary this year and celebrated with a huge nautical themed party. Potential Bestival-goers take note: Bestivalians take their fancy dress seriously and the Saturday

was awash with sea-creatures, mermen, lighthouses, Titanic characters, castaways, fish finger sandwiches and even Ursula the Sea Witch! Very much feeling like Glastonbury’s little brother, Bestival encompasses all that is right with the UK’s festival scene – an eclectic line up; the opportunity to party non-stop or tuck yourself into a secret spot for a workshop or acoustic jam and most importantly an over-arching sense of FUN. The artistic touches make the experience more enchanting and the sense of adventure as you discover a cinema in the trees or a bloomin’ great ship round the corner ensures there’s never a dull moment. We will certainly be setting sail on the good ship Bestival again next year!

Southampton’s Seán McGowan made his début at Glastonbury Festival in June on not one but five different stages at the Somerset bash. Starting with a packed crowd at celebrity hangout, The Rabbit Hole, and finishing with a guest slot on the Leftfield stage singing ‘Rock the Casbah’ with Billy Bragg, Kate Nash and Sam Duckworth, Seán certainly left an impression that should see him cement a place as a regular fixture at Pilton. The Rolling Stones also made their début and, although the likeliness of them returning is pretty unlikely, Mick Jagger and co put in a performance that will go down in legend. Glastonbury is a festival that truly caters for everybody; we met a lady called Jean, in her 80’s, selling merch for Strummerville, who had been coming since day one and she said she had no intention of stopping any time soon. We asked Jean what her favourite part was. “It’s simple”, she said, “it’s the people what make Glastonbury such a special place. There’s somebody from every walk of life here, and they’re all so friendly. I’m already looking forward to next year”.

BOURNEMOUTH MUSIC | OCTOBER 2013

Beautiful Days does exactly what it says on the tin. I frequent around 5 or 6 festivals every Summer & BD would be my favourite even if I didn’t care for any acts on the lineup! The combination of the atmosphere, lovely location, friendliness & of course the brilliant ale & food options really do it for me. From an artist’s perspective, I’ve always been treated superbly & professionally too. Created by The Levellers (splendid gentlemen) for all the right reasons, easily the most fun you can have in a field! I’d go even if I wasn’t playing & that’s a rarity for me these days!

DAVE MCPHERSON

Encompassing all the craziest bits of Glastonbury yet keeping the capacity to a modest 30,000; BoomTown is nestled in the rolling countryside just outside Winchester. It’s certainly not one for the fainthearted – if you want to party, non-stop, for four days straight then THIS IS THE FESTIVAL FOR YOU. If you want your senses battered from all directions by weird, wonderful, at times beautiful and at other times brilliantly terrifying sights and sounds then go, pull on your fanciful costume, douse yourself in glitter and set yourself free amongst the madness. The sheer amount of effort from all involved is what comes together to make BoomTown the full on sensory explo-sion it is. There’s a theme for everyone as the entire siteis a tangling maze of districts such as ChinaTown, Barrioloco and Mayfair. During the day BoomTown is full of chilled out vibes and relaxed grooves but it’s at night that the party really kicks into high gear. The explosion (and yes, we literally mean EXPLOSION) of Arcadia allows you to party till the small hours to the hard trance and huge beats blasting out of Arcadia, under the watchful eyes of an enormous fire breathing mechanical spider. No, really, that happened! ZAN LAWTHER

Celebrating its 18th year in 2013 it’s easy to see how this micro-festival has managed to achieve its coming of age milestone. The support from the local community for this event is palpable and even the questionable weather didn’t dampen the spirits. Showcasing some of Bournemouth’s strongest homegrown talent as well as nationally recognised headliners and a smattering of Boscombe’s most eccentric characters, as ‘tourists’ we felt wholly accepted into the fold and will certainly be returning next year.

ZAN LAWTHERBoardmasters’ setting on a cliff top overlooking the sea in Newquay already sets it apart from your average festival. Attracting bands such as Ben Howard, Everything Everything, Basement Jaxx and Grandmaster Flash this year pushed it up into the big leagues and even better - the weather held out too! Although the main stage does tend to struggle with sound the big tops create a great vibe and when you add in the surfing and BMX competitions you’re not short

of things to be entertained by. Until 1am that is, when the festival shuts down, lights out. A night bus ferries late night party goers into town but it’s a bit of a crush and we’re left wanting a little more fun before bedtime. They’re on the right track though and Boardmasters continues to grow

every year - we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in 2014!JAMES WILLARD

Just answer this simple question:

What is the title of Deaf Havana’s latest album which has just entered the UK charts at number 9?

It’s been an incredible year for the dynamic UK six-piece with a new US label and major supports with huge names like Bruce Springsteen and Muse. Now they are heading out on their own and headlining some of their biggest shows yet with none other than Charlie Simpson (Fightstar/Busted) and (one of our tips for 2014) Big Sixes in support. Here’s your chance to win a pair of tickets to their Southampton Guildhall show.

British-Colombian afro-beat reggae fusion

A tribute to the greatest rock band EVER!

Crushing homegrown hard rock

Brighton based post rock with a twist

Gypsy rock n roll veterans

Based in Bournemouth and founded by passionate drummer Julian Leon, Pachango’s music is uplifting with its exciting melodic fusion of exotic gypsy-Latin soulful rhythms and strong powerful brass section that complements the sizzling flow of lyrics in Spanish and English. Featuring regularly on the festival circuit you can see them for free at Chaplin’s Cellar Bar!

You’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time with these four top class musicians recreating Led Zeppelin’s magical concerts. Featuring Peter Eldridge from We Will Rock You; Jack Tanner and Kevin Oliver Jones from the world tours of Thriller Live; and Simon Wicker as Bonzo incarnate, they play all the right instruments and hit all the right notes in this explosive live show.

With bags of confidence, presence and ability and revitalised from a recent line-up change local hard rock outfit MG & the Juggernaut are forging a reputation for powerful, adrenaline fuelled face-melting riffs and energetic live shows. Catch them in all their glory in Southampton on the 18th.

Hidden behind feathered masks, demonic looking costumes and effortlessly changing between many instruments, this mysterious duo perform live soundtracks to a backdrop of award winning short films with poignant and dark subject matters. Dreamy ambient swells, epic builds and huge moments of power for those looking for something a little bit different.

Known in the US as the London Quireboys (even though they‘re from Newcastle), this rock band started in the late ’80s/early ’90s. Following their first hit album the rise of grunge made it a chal-lenging time for them. They’ve survived many reincarnations and are still rocking out, entertaining fans with their upbeat brand of singalong, slide guitar and harmonica infused RAWK.

Hardcore tribute acts at Sound Circus

Project X presents Radio 1 DJ superstar-

Get your prog on!

HUGE, hard and heavy double headline

It’s dancey, it’s heavy, it’s...who needs labels?

Two of the UK’s best known heavy metal tribute acts hit Sound Circus this month. Having toured for 16 years the growling vocals, manic prowling power of the bass, thunderous high speed drums and screaming solos ensure Mentallica deliver. Endorsed by Dean Guitars, 101% Pantera are dedicated to reproducing the live en-ergy of a Pantera show to its fullest and they won’t disappoint!

Radio 1’s main man and one of the best Festival DJ’s on the planet, Zane Lowe’s sets never fail to cause mayhem! Expect the best in Bass music, Hip hop, House, Dubstep, Drum N Bass and Trap for an incendiary set that will require serious crowd control! Supported by Bournemouth’s very own Mash up Guru Jay Welch whose dancefloor bombs will be the perfect warm up.

If you like prog, you’ll like Intronaut. Progressive metal with some harsh vocals as well as, more recently, melodic vocals and vocal harmonies, combined with jazzy instrumental breaks. Their sound incorporates traits from prog rock, sludge metal, Indian, African, and Afro-Latin rhythms, as well as a heavy jazz influence.

Brace yourselves for Belgian metallers Steak Number Eight’s dark and sludgy tones sound far older than their years (they were discovered as teenagers in 2005). Add to the bill the hooky riffs and sweaty aggression of Hildamay and it’s fair to say things are going to go OFF in The Anvil.

This 4-piece deathcore/electronica band comprised of veterans from the American music scene is known for fusing deathcore and hardcore with heavy electronic influences including hardstyle, techno, and trance. Labelled everything from deathtronica, cybergrind to trancecore and technocore, one thing remains certain; The Browning appeals to a broad spectrum of music fans.

Arguably the biggest innovators in commercial dance music since 1990, musical genius Liam Howlett and his colleagues were at the forefront of the rave explosion (‘Experience’), early techno/trance/dance crossovers (‘Jilted Generation’) and rap/punk,techno fusion (‘Fat Of the Land’). Known for their stunning lightshows and MCing when playing live, The Prodigy will take your brain to another dimension at the Bournemouth International Centre this December, if you’re lucky enough to get hold of tickets that is. Standing tickets are sold out but Bournemouth Music has a pair that you and a pal could be using to dance your little trotters off when The Prodigy roll into Bournemouth.

BOURNEMOUTH MUSIC | OCTOBER 2013

So the album came out earlier this year, it must feel good to be taking it out on the road?Yes it’s great to be finally getting out there on tour! The album has been out for 3 months now, so we are all ready to play these songs live for the next 12 months on the road.

Thin Lizzy are known for maintaining a dedicated touring schedule, do you plan to keep up the momentum with Black Star Riders?Yes, absolutely. It’s what we enjoy and ultimately feel where we as a band belong is on the road.

How important do you think live shows are compared to recording? It’s a completely different mindset when you are playing live to recording. Obviously in a live situation you get the atmosphere from the audience and you feed off that. Live is where you get to show off as it were, your songs, your musicianship, it’s all about entertaining.

When recording the new album you laid down 12 songs in 12 days, how did that work as a creative process? Well, I guess we wanted to try and capture as much live attitude and feel as we could with this record in a studio environment. We basically just moved our live set up into the studio, and Kevin Shirley, our producer, recorded us all playing together as a live band. The only overdubs we did were a few guitar parts and some backing vocals. It was an exciting way to work, but you gotta have your shit together for sure.

What do you think sets this album apart from earlier work as Thin Lizzy? Well apart from the obvious factor...that sadly Phil is not with us. We wanted to establish an identity for Black Star Riders whilst retaining the spirit of Thin Lizzy. For example, Scott Gorham is always gonna have that classic Scott Gorham guitar sound and amen to that but we wanted to move forward also and with the name change it took a bit of pressure off us and let us explore any directions we felt we wanted to.

What was the catalyst to move away from Thin Lizzy and bring Black Star Riders to life?A number of reasons. Main one being that when it came down to it we just didn’t feel comfortable making a new Thin Lizzy album without Phil. Scott and Brian decided that we should just leave the legacy alone, which we all agreed on. As a fan I think we definitely made the right decision, although at the time there was a lot of soul searching going on and it was not an easy one to make. But it is the correct one.

You’ve got Bournemouth local boys Western Sand opening for you on this tour; what was it that sealed the deal with signing them up? Very simple. They are a great band!

Is it important to you to support unsigned artists?Yes, it’s nice to be able to help new upcoming talented artists.

Do you have any advice for bands looking to push themselves forward in the industry?Work hard; rehearse a lot; play live as much as you can; write as much as you can; believe in yourself; never take no for an answer and watch ‘Live & Dangerous’ by Thin Lizzy at least once a day!

BLACK STAR RIDERS

Black Star Riders kick off their UK and Ireland tour this month and first up is Bournemouth’s very own O2 Academy. A reincarnation of the current Thin Lizzy line up and described as “the next step in the evolution of the Thin Lizzy story” there’s new music and, as you can imag-ine, an excellent stage show from these legends of rock. Fear not diehard Thin Lizzy fans, Lizzy will still be performing and touring, however in 2012 the band agreed to release their new ma-terial as Black Star Riders as a mark of respect for original front man, the late Phil Lynott.

Opening up the show and on board the party bus for the entire tour are local hard rockers Western Sand. A long-time favourite on the local scene and with us here at Bournemouth Music HQ, these lads have played relentlessly since their formation in 2008 and brought their old skool hard rock to your stereo with their self-titled EP release earlier this year. Touted as having “a swagger that belies their annoyingly young stance”, you can find out more in our Ones to Watch section overleaf! So, armed with new material from recent album ‘All Hell Breaks Loose’ and fresh from a festival-filled summer we’re expecting something a bit special from BSR and we caught up with lead singer Ricky Warwick to tell us a little bit more…..

ONES TO WATCH

BOURNEMOUTH MUSIC | OCTOBER 2013

So, big things have happened since we last spoke…..opening slot on the UK/EIRE Black Star Riders tour!! How does that feel? At first it didn’t feel real, it is only sinking in now after seeing it all announced in magazines and across all the social media. So far we have had a great response and are getting some great reviews of our EP so it is all pretty exciting.

You guys have worked pretty hard the past few years, was there a particular event that lead to getting this support slot? We were asked to play several shows with Heavens basement early this year. Their agent came and actually caught our set in Southampton and we kept in contact with him. Around the same time we signed a management deal and between our manager and HB agent they got us on the BSR tour.

It’s pretty exciting that the tour kicks off in your hometown – is there anywhere else you’re re-ally looking forward to playing? I am really excited to play shepherds bush empire as it is such a prestigious venue. I saw Europe there last year, it is a great venue. I am looking forward to every single show.

What’s the best thing about touring? This will be our first proper tour so i guess i’ll have to let you know when we have finished. It will be great getting to see so many new cities and get-ting to play impressive venues and meeting lots of new people, hopefully making lots of new fans along the way.

Are you travelling in a van? Does it have a name? Yes we have a nice dodgy old van. I’m not aware of it having a name, I’ll have to ask it.

Who are your strongest musical influences? For me it’s Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Guns n Roses, The Stones, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd...I could go on. We all love our classic and hard rock

What can we expect from your live show? A lot of energy and a lot of feel good rock n roll!

And finally…..if you were a fruit, which fruit would you be?Ermm, Freddie Mercury or Elton John, both of whom are legends. ZAN LAWTHER

Up n’ coming UK rockers WESTERN SAND have been confirmed as the opening band on BLACK STAR RIDERS UK/IRE tour later this year. The four-piece, southern hard rock revival group from Bournemouth beat off stiff competition to get the slot on one of the most talked about tours of 2013 and they’re hell bent on blazing trails come this November.

Frontman/guitarist Tyler Hains enthuses “We’re nervous, excited but more than anything absolutely stoked to be a part of such a prestigious tour. To be sharing the stage with some of the finest musicians in the business is a real honour and we can’t wait for the tour to kick off”. WESTERN SAND have just released their self titled debut EP and it’s a scorcher. 4 tracks of ballsy rock n’ roll with more swagger than jagger and a cheeky glimpse of what this young band have to offer demonstrates what to expect later this year.

The new EP sees the four-piece, southern hard rock revival group from Bournemouth take their cue from the likes of Lynyrd Skynrd, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin and Metallica; wrapped up in their own unique vision on the ever popular classic rock genre.

This latest tour announcement continues the bands upward momentum; already Western Sand have supported the likes of Nazareth, Reckless Love, Jettblack, The Treatment, Heavens Basement and Voodoo Six.
