BOWEN SECONDARY SCHOOL Briefing to

SUBJECT-BASED BANDING (SECONDARY)

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Sec 1 students posted to the N(A) and N(T) courses may be offered by MOE to take EL/Math/Science/MTL at a higher level, based on their PSLE subject grades.

Students can choose to accept or reject MOE’s offer.

MOE’s eligibility criteria for offering higher level subjects:

28

Course PSLE Standard

Grade

PSLE Foundation

Grade

You can offer

the subject at

N(A) A*, A - Express

N(T) A*, A - Express/ N(A)

B, C 1 N(A)

WHY OFFER HIGHER LEVEL SUBJECTS?

Every student is unique and has different strengths.

Taking subjects at a higher level can help you nurture your strengths and give you more opportunities to broaden your learning.

When you get to Sec 3, you will be able to take higher level subjects. Studying higher level subjects at Sec 1 and 2 will help you build a stronger foundation for Sec 3.

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS

The school will provide the necessary support for SBB students to cope and succeed in the higher level subject(s).

You are encouraged to continue with the higher level subject(s) from now till the end of Sec 2, regardless of grades achieved, since it takes time for you to adjust to the higher level.

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES TO TAKE HIGHER-LEVEL SUBJECTS

If you are not offered by MOE to take higher level subjects:

If you do well in the Sec 1 mid-year / year-end exams, you may be considered by the school to take higher-level subjects. Criteria:

75% or higher in the subject;

60% or higher in the overall average; and

Positive learning attitude to cope with the higher academic demand

Our school will provide support through bridging programmes for these students.

CONCLUSION

If you are in NA or NT and are offered to take higher-level subjects – do take up the offer.

If you are in NA or NT and are not offered to take higher-level subjects – it is okay – study hard and you can still be considered at mid-year / year-end.

If you are in Express, you may have NA or NT students joining your class for certain subjects – welcome them and mutually help one another.

Mother Tongue & Foreign Languages Mrs Florence Hoo

Importance of MTL

• The bilingual policy is a cornerstone of Singapore’s education system.

• Schools equip students with language and cultural competencies to help them (a) develop a broader outlook and (b) enable them to tap into regional and global opportunities.

“The learning of our native languages reinforces our cultural identity, values and roots. It gives us world-view that complements the perspective of the English-speaking world.”

Ms Sim Ann . Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and Trade and Industry

MOE MTL Policy
