the top Boykin Spaniel in theUKC and soon to be in theAKC, newbie Boykin breed-ers are trying to tell me howto breed Boykin Spaniels. Iam the breeder of the HollowCreek bloodline. The recordsof the dogs carrying thatname speak for themselves. Itake full financial and per-sonal responsibility for whatI breed...as any good breedershould.

Finally, the newer membersof the BSC/BAA Board ofDirectors were very upsetthat I had the audacity totake the adult daughter ofthe club new President tocourt to re-possess a dogwhich I bred and own perdocumentation….and was soawarded by two differentNorth Carolina judges in twoseparate hearings. Whengiven no other option I willdo what I have to do and willnot be chastised for reclaim-ing that which is mine.

That is pretty much full dis-closure… except I was alsoremoved as Editor of thenewsletter.

For now, I remain a mem-ber of the BSC/BAA.

Enough on that subject - Ihave put that behind me andmoved on. Part of my mov-ing on is this newsletter --please enjoy it.

Full Disclosure...

I have received manyinquires regarding my statuswith the BSC/BAA and aboutmy participation in a recentAKC Hunt Test and otherBoykin world issues. In aneffort to respond to all at onceand avoid repeating myselftoo many times, I will attemptto relay below the facts andresults as I understand them.

I founded and incorporatedthe BSC/BAA. I envisioned aclub where diversity wasallowed and honesty wouldprevail. Unfortunately, themajority of the newer mem-bers of the BSC/BAA Boardof Directors have a differentagenda. Consequently, inJanuary 2006, I was voted offthe Board of Directors of theBSC/BAA.

As I understand and recallthat Board meeting, the newermembers of the BSC/BAA

Board of Directors were tryingto dictate to me which organi-zations I could or could not bea member and which registriesI could or could not registermy pups. Specifically, theythought it was wrong that Icontinue my membership inthe Boykin Spaniel Society andthought it inappropriate that Icontinue to register puppieswith the Boykin SpanielSociety (because of the lawsuitbrought by the BSS against theBSC/BAA). You know me andof course know that I was notabout to let anyone or any clubdictate which organizations Icould or could not be a mem-ber and which registries Icould or could not register my

pups.

The newer members of theBSC/BAA Board of Directors(and newbie Boykin breeders)were also trying to tell me howto breed my dogs. Imaginethat: After 15 years of breed-ing experience and breeding

Leaps and Bounds by Mickie Brown

Once a bird is downed, he headsstraight to it, noses it, picks it updelicately…and just as gently putsit back on the ground and waits forMike. Coaxing, cajoling, teasing, scolding nothing will convince himthat part of his job description callsfor him to bring the bird to thehunter.

But, of course, if he did, he'd beperfect and probably unbearable tolive with.

Speaking of perfect - theMagnificent Seamus passed hisphysical beautifully - hips, eyes, knees, and all other bits and piecesin perfect alignment and workingorder. And within the next fewmonths, the offspring of CHHollow Creek's Rosey O'Donneland Sandalwood’s Colin Brice, willbecome a sire himself.

Stay tuned.

The apple tree in our backyard nolonger has any lower limbs. Itbecame apparent in late summer asthe boughs, weighed down byapples, caught the eye of the everenergetic CH Hollow Creek Seamus, that war was about to be waged. Inthe early months the battles, thoughentertaining, were not dramatic.

Each morning as the screen doorwas slid aside to allow Seamus torelieve himself, he would make amad dash into the yard, snatch anapple from a low-hanging branchand prance victoriously. His besot-ted audience - that would be Mikeand Mickey - would hoot andapplaud.

That lasted only until the buoyantBoykin jarred the screen off thetrack the first time. It was, howev-er, too late to derail the SeamusExpress. After the tenth or sodog/screen face off, the screen hadto be replaced.

The seasons changed, the apples nolonger bore the branches near theground…and a star was born…fear-less and undaunted as the barrenbranches shifted higher and higher.

The mighty Boykin developed avertical leap that would leave mostNBA power forwards hanging theirheads.

Seamus has cultivated his own rou-

tine. He launches from the doorway, warms up with a leap at the taller oftwo birdfeeders, circles the yard, heads back toward the house, thenpropels forward and up, up, up untilhe reaches a branch tip, yanks it free,

shakes it, drops it and pauses await-ing the roar of the crowd.

On occasion, when feeling particu-larly pleased with himself, he'll stopoff at the wind chimes, levitate a cou-ple of feet and set them ringingbefore demanding readmittance.

Now, it is somewhat significant thatthe branch never makes it to thehouse. Seamus is not all thatinterested in retrieving.

In his third year, he hasproven to be quite the birder- focused, determined, unre-lenting, even admonishingthe poor shots in the groupwhen a perfectly flushedpheasant or quail escapesunscathed.

1. Diet high in fiber and moisturecontent.2. Stool softeners such asMetamucil or Colace.3. Digital (manual) removal ofimpacted feces.Surgical Repair is the treatment ofchoice for most cases of perinealhernia. This is achieved by sutur-ing specific muscles together toreform a pelvic diaphragm. Ifthere is insufficient tissue availableto close the defect, an implantedsurgical mesh may be used.

In those cases where the urinarybladder has retroflexed (flippedback) into the hernia, surgeryshould be performed immediately, and the bladder repositioned intothe abdomen. Abdominal surgerymay be required to stabilize thebladder in its normal position.

Castration should be consideredin all intact males, due to thepotential hormonal influence onperineal herniation. This is partic-ularly important when the prostateis increased in size, as enlargementof this gland may cause straining, which will place unneeded stresson the surgical repair.

PERINEAL HERNIA

A hernia is the protrusion of anorgan or tissue through an abnor-mal opening in the abdominal wall.A perineal hernia results from aweakening of the pelvic musclesthat support the rectum, which sub-sequently stretch and bulge with fator abdominal tissue.

Perineal hernias are seen in dogs, and rarely cats and other species. The Boston Terrier, Boxer, Collie,Welsh Corgi, Pekingese, Dachshundand Old English Sheepdog are themost commonly affected breeds. There is at least one severe casedocumented in a Boykin Spaniel. The vast majority of perineal her-nia cases occur in the middle agedto older intact males. In these dogs, testosterone causes a chronicenlargement (hypertrophy) of theprostate gland. As the animalstrains to urinate and defecatearound the enlarged prostate, thetissues adjacent to the rectumweaken, allowing fat or abdominalorgans to push out around the rec-tum and form a pouch under theskin. This pouch may enlarge whenstraining pushes tissue out into itand may be become smaller as tis-sue moves back into the abdomen.

Females are rarely affected due tothe greater strength, size and areaof the rectal attachments of theirlevator ani muscles (one of thepelvic muscles) and their lack of aprostate gland. Approximately onethird of the hernias are bilateral(occurring on both sides).

SYMPTOMS The most common owner com-

plaints of dogs with perineal her-

nias are chronic constipation, strain-ing to defecate, and a swelling oneither side of the rectum. Othersigns may include straining to uri-nate, pain on defecation, fecal incon-tinence, and altered tail carriage.

DIAGNOSISThe hernia is diagnosed based on

the history and physical examina-tion. A defect in the pelvicdiaphragm musculature or saccula-tion (out pouching) of the rectumare usually detected on rectal palpa-tion. Fatty tissue is usually presentin the hernia. A non-reducible(unmovable) fluid-filled mass in thehernia suggests displacement of theurinary bladder. In all cases, bothsides of the pelvic diaphragm shouldbe palpated. While the patient mayappear to be unilaterally affected, both sides are often times found tobe weakened.

If the prostate is enlarged, thecause of this enlargement must bedetermined. Benign hyperplasia, abscessation, cyst formation, andtumors must all be considered andtreated appropriately. Castration isrecommended in all cases due to theeffects of testosterone on theprostate gland and perianal muscu-lature.

TREATMENTConservative Therapy may be tried

to palliate dogs with minimal signs,or in those patients where the anes-thetic risk is too great to considersurgery. Medical management israrely successful in permanentlycontrolling the clinical signs that areassociated with perineal herniation.

These measures may also be usedas an adjunct to surgical repair:

Spaniel Ears Syndrome: Blue Power Ear Treatment

Remember, Gentian Violet willstain hair, clothing, etc. It isthe solution that they givehuman babies with “thrush”(oral yeast infection).

The Blue Power EarTreatment as detailed aboveappears to work well on anyand all ear problems frommites to wax to canker. Thesuccess rate is said to be 95-99%. If an infection seems tobe remaining in the treatedear there may also be somePseudomonas bacteria in thesite. This can be eradicated byusing a gentle flush of rawapple cider vinegar and water(warmed). Use 2 TB of vinegarto one cup of water, TWICEper week.

As with all medical issues, youshould consult yourveterinarian.

INGREDIENTS:

16 oz. Isopropyl Alcohol4 TB Boric Acid Powder16 Drops Gentian VioletSolution (see end of article formore info.)

Mix in alcohol bottle and shakewell. Purchase a flexible plas-tic bottle with opening at top sothat solution may be squeezedout and dispense solution to theaffected ears. The ideal is ahair-dye bottle.

TREATMENT PROCEDURE:

1. Evaluate condition of earsbefore treating and if veryinflamed and sore, do notattempt to pull hair or cleanout ear at all. Just flush andwait until inflammation has subsided, about two days.2. Warm the solution andshake the bottle each timebefore each use.3. Flood the ear with solutionby gently squirting bottle.4. Massage gently to the countof 60, wipe.5. On first treatment: flood theear twice, wipe, and leave alonewithout massage.6. The dog will shake out theexcess, which can be wiped upwith a tissue.*Note: The Gentian Violet doesstain fabric, etc, so you maywant to wear gloves. The SCHEDULE of treatmentis as follows:

• Treat TWICE aday for the firstweek to twoweeks, depend-ing on the sever-ity.• After the sec-ond or third dayyou can cleanout the ear witha Q-tip or cottonballs (see cautionbelow).• Treat ONCE a day for the next1-2 weeks).• Treat ONCE a month (or evenless frequently, depending onthe dog).* Caution: When using a Q-tip,only insert it as far into the earcanal as you can actually see.Use care to prevent the gunkfrom falling down into the earcanal.* Note: All of these ingredientsshould be available at the phar-macy, but some may be specialorder items for you.

Users of the Blue Power EarTreatment have found that, unless the dog has abraded theskin by scratching, the alcoholdoesn’t sting and the dog willnot object to even the first treat-ment. The Boric Acid Powdersoothes the ear. The GentianViolet Solution is an anti-infec-tion agent, as it is a dye mixturethat acts as a bactericide, fungi-cide, and anthelmintic (destroysworms).

The Boykin Spaniel made a great show-ing at the first AKC Hunt Test for whichit was eligible held in Lavonia, Georgia,on February 11-12, 2006. TheChattahoochee English Springer SpanielClub of Greater Atlanta hosted theevent. They also hosted a training dayon the Friday prior to the hunt. This wasa great opportunity to train with yourflushing breeds on live birds.

You likely know how much I wanted toparticipate and run my dogs in thisevent. I created the BSC/BAA whichstarted the ball rolling for the BSC/BAAto become the AKC Parent Club for theBoykin Spaniel and finally led to thefirst AKC Hunt Test in this area offeredfor Boykin Spaniel participation.Unfortunately I am back in chemothera-py which prevented me from being ableto run any of my own dogs but it couldnot keep me from attending and at leastwatching.

I will not attempt to print oreven summarize all of theguidelines of the AKC Hunttests, but I will summarize theStandards of Performance andbasic test elements so that youwill understand it is not asdaunting a task as it may firstseem…at least for the JuniorHunter. For a complete copy ofthe AKC Guidelines for SpanielHunting Tests, you can down-load a copy of the rules onlineathttp://www.akc.org/pdfs/rulebooks/RHTSPN.pdf or order a hard copy versionof the booklet from the AKC.

Spaniels are flushing breeds. Their pur-pose is to hunt, find game, flush andretrieve birds in a pleasing and efficientmanner. The purpose of a Hunting Testfor spaniels is to test the merits of, andevaluate the abilities of Spaniels in thefield in order to determine their suitabil-ity and ability as hunting companions. The objective of the hunting test pro-gram is to help the hunter develop a

useful hunting companion by providing ameans to gauge a dog's abilities againstthree standards of accomplishment-JuniorHunter, Senior Hunter and MasterHunter. Hunting Tests must, therefore, simulate as near as possible the conditionmet in a hunting situation found in theregion of the country in which a huntingtest is held. Testing in this manner is togauge the dog's natural hunting abilityand training.

JUNIOR HUNTING TEST -- A Juniorhunting dog must show a desire to huntin an enthusiastic manner and an abilityto flush and to retrieve. It is not neces-sary that a dog be steady to wing andshot. The dog should show no fear ofcover, a reasonable response to com-mands (whistle, hand, or verbal), andmaintain a reasonable working distancefrom its handler. Junior hunting dogsshould complete their retrieves to closeproximity of handler, but need not

retrieve completely to hand. Handlersmay control their dogs by hand, whistle,and/or verbal signals but only in the quietmanner that would be used in the field. AJunior hunting dog may be restrainedgently on the line at water.

Test Elements -- 1. Must find, flush and retrieve two (2)birds on land. 2. One (1) bird must be returned fromwater at a distance of approx. twentyyards with a shot fired.

To be awarded the title of Junior Hunter,

A Master hunting dogmust show a keen enthusiasm to hunt, must have a bold and attractive mannerof running, and must demonstrate notonly intelligence in seeking objectives, but also excellent ability to find game. The dog must hunt for its handler at alltimes at a suitable gun range, showing afine Spaniel pattern and experiencedhunting independence. The dog mustlocate game, flush well and must beabsolutely steady to wing and shot with-out excessive handling in both land andwater testing. Intelligent use of the windand terrain in locating game, accuratenose, and intensity are essential. Afterthe shot, a Master hunting dog mustpositively demonstrate its steadiness towing and shot. The handler shall notcommand or signal the dog to retrieveuntil steadiness has been demonstrated.

Test Elements:1. Must find, flush and retrieve two (2)birds to hand on land.2. Hollow Creek's CabellaI'm training Bella at Big Red Oak

Plantation in Gay, Ga and I can't beginto tell you the number of compliments Ihave received. Most of the hunters in

this area are not use to seeing a Boykinand can't believe how natural she is in

the field. She is very aggressive and hernose is truly unbelievable. I'm nowshooting over her and killing birds

which she is retrieving with no problem.I'm planning to continue to work with

her on quail through the end of themonth then move to pigeons. I have no

doubts that she will be ready forpheasant come October.

morning-in 8 oz. yogurt cups. Every time, the verdict

was the same: crystals and“junk” in the urine, e.g., miner-als.

We waded through antibi-otics and a medicine calledMethioform, which contained theproblem; but did not resolve theproblem!!!

After repeat treatments,my vet called me and told methat she suspected the problemwas in the water. Wake County’swater, she said, is among theworst in the state noted for min-erals,' trash' e.g., sand. For aweek, I supplied only bottledwater that had been purified. This was an exhausting task!!!

The resolution was awhole house water filtration sys-tem. I bought mine from Lowe’s,since the system they sell is excel-lent by reputation and afford-able, about $40.00. Amazingly, after installing the system, eachdog began displaying improvedlab results. And, at present, everyone is clear except Banks, who, the vet thinks, may manu-facture crystals without the helpof the environment. If you havethis tedious problem look careful-ly at your water, especially if it iswell-driven.

Love Note...I want to share my love

note with "Boykin SpanielsForever" readers... A little over ayear ago, I was diagnosed withmantle cell lymphoma.

Following a period of wild-eyed fear I decided that I wanted aboykin pup.

However, I worried aboutthe attention that a pup deservedand whether or not I could provideit considering my predicament...Cohort Susan Kahler, we transportfor Boykin Spaniel Rescue togeth-er, suggested that I adopt a rescueboy or girl.

I opened my email one dayand Susan and husband, Kevin, had mailed pictures of Lily, ayoung boykin abandoned inCharlotte, NC. "That pretty, sad-eyed girl is the one", I thought!!!!

I was struck by Lily when Imet her, but I knew she was not aLily! So she became LadyBanksia, Banks.

I believe that she sensed mymisery and fear and the first nightwith me, she staked her place onthe bed, on my pillow... I will haveto digress, here, to the bed--Banks’ feat was a brave onebecause my bed has been dividedthree ways by Carter (Boykin), andNich and Abbot (Cockers)!!!

What a gymnast she is!!!!Banks can leap three feet off theground on retrieve and clear a wallon the terrace from the bottom up,effortlessly!!!! She has introducedme to her friends, the dragonflyfamily, and is presently, trying totalk the resident squirrels out of thetrees to play with her... Banks’favorite toy is an 'air ring' con-structed from tennis ball material.

She carries that ring so that it hidesher face; it always makes melaugh...

I love you, Banks! And I amgrateful to the people who let yougo!!!!

Mystery Illness...I live in a 'still sorta rural'

town in NC-Knightdale, outsideRaleigh, NC. It is important tosketch this geography since it playsa significant role in my notes toyou. Among others, I am privi-leged to share my living quarterswith two boykins, Carter Burton,9, And Lady Banksia (Banks), 1 1/2years old.

About four months ago, allmy four-legged friends, Carter,Banks, and Cockers-- Abbot andNich-- began to display bladderinfections. One at a time, 'concen-trated urine', asthick as honey, would appearovernight on mykitchen tile floor. To avoid exam vis-its times fourevery week, Ibegan to collectsamples-early
