TODAY’S WEATHER HIGH: 47 LOW: 31 The Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville will participate in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on Nov. 29, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. This charitable day kicks-off the holiday giving season and inspires people to collaborate in improving their local communities while giving back in impactful ways to the organizations and causes they support. This #GivingTuesday, the Club is challenging the community get involved by helping bridge the gap for ten Club members. Over 280 members visit the club each day after school for only $45 per year, while the actual cost to the Club is $428 per child, leaving a gap of $383. The Club’s goal for the event is to raise a total of $3,830 to bridge the gap for ten Club memberships. “A child left alone after school could easily become a victim,” says Executive Director, Becky Terry. “It could be bullying, peer pressure, or other dangers. It happens more than you know — even in our community. But your support on Giving Tuesday can change all that. In fact, it could quite possibly save a life. We are asking our supporters to help change the world this holiday by impacting the life of a child.” For those who are interested in supporting the Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville’s #GivingTuesday initiative, please visit www.BGCNI.org to make a difference in the life of a local child. Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville to participate in #GivingTuesday By STEVE COOKE Noblesville Deputy Mayor In my capacity as Deputy Mayor for the City of Nobles- ville, I have on occasion heard com- plaints about the problem of government overreach. Not the city’s overreach, mind you, but from the state and federal government. Often, the examples of overreach come with an “unfunded mandate” – meaning we must implement some kind of required change that we didn’t agree with, had no say in and we get the added pleasure of having to pay for it, too. This would be humorous if I didn’t see how much mandates end up costing the city and our taxpayers. Sometimes, local government officials join together and we use our collective voices to try and overcome the mandated change. Or if still unsuccessful, at least we can take comfort knowing that we’re not alone. That is – until we learned this summer about the United State Postal Service’s plans for mandating “cluster box units” (CBUs) for new residential developments in Nobles- ville. And a new neighborhood has already been forced into compliance. A cluster mailbox is similar to what you see in apart- ment complexes where all the mailboxes are located in a central location for residents to retrieve their mail, or send mail out. The idea is that the Postal Service saves money because carriers deliver and pick up in fewer stops. And you the homeowner get to march out into the snow to discover your mail has yet to arrive. Better luck next hike. What’s the big deal you ask? For as long as Americans have been receiving their mail from a postal worker – at least not one on horseback – we’ve been accustomed to getting our mail at the end of our driveways. While cluster mailboxes are merely an added inconvenience for some, and unsightly for others – for older or disabled homeowners, cluster mailboxes are a burden, especially during inclement weather. I know some will still say this sounds like a “first world problem” from a bunch of whiners – but consider this. From the information our Planning Depart-ment gathered over the summer the City ofNoblesville is the only community in Ham-ilton County required by USPS to have itsbuilders construct cluster mailboxes fornew neighborhoods This federal policywas being applied by the Postmaster whooversees Noblesville Mr Clint Helmold

This federal mandate essentially putsNoblesville at a distinct disadvantage inattracting residents and new developmentsIt also adds an extra burden on our Citystaff who are now expected to regulatecluster mailboxes to comply with USPSspecifications And like the worst of gov-ernment regulations this policy was enact-ed locally without a single notice for publicinput that we can recall

When a local developer first broughtthis issue to the Cityrsquos attention MayorJohn Ditslear and our Planning Departmentimmediately took up the cause Their con-cerns were echoed by Congresswoman Su-san Brooks members of our CommonCouncil area realtors ndash and the residentswho bought homes in a new neighborhoodwithout knowing of this federal mandate

We also met with Mr Helmold andpleaded that our community should not besingled out

Unfortunately our calls to halt thismandate were denied by Mr Helmold andin writing by USPS Greater Indiana DistrictManager Todd Hawkins who respondedthat the Postal Service is given the autono-my to determine the delivery of mail that isldquoadequate and necessary to meeting its ba-sic function in the most efficient mannerrdquo

Despite the Postal Servicersquos time-hon-ored motto that promises ldquoNeither snownor rain nor heat nor gloom of nightrdquo to getthe job done our weather-worn and hard-working mail carriers are not to blame herendash but rather the overreach of federal gov-ernment without any input from local offi-cials when such policies are appliedhaphazardly

At the end of the day we applaud allefforts by the federal government to cutcosts whenever possible But when eachcityrsquos Postmaster is free to determine whichpolicies to follow and which to ignore andneighboring communities are forced intovarying mandates whatrsquos the point in hav-ing a federal policy at all

And while we dislike cluster mailboxesin general Noblesville residents in new

neighborhoods should not be subsidizingthe budget shortfalls of the Postal Servicefor the benefit of all other Hamilton Countyresidents

Changes at the federal level may even-tually make their way to the Postmaster inNoblesville But how many developmentsin the meantime will be forced to followthis ridiculous example of governmentoverreach This is where you come in

I ask that you join with Noblesville andhelp us fight this example of governmentoverreach Seek out your Postmaster andplead your cityrsquos case with e-mails andphone calls In Noblesville please e-mailMr Helmold at clinthelmolduspsgov orcall 317-464-6850 Or ndash if you must ndash writehim a letter and mail it to USPS 1900Pleasant Street Noblesville IN 46060

I just hope you donrsquot have to walk far toput that letter in your mailbox

Until next time see you on the square

By RICHIE HALLReporter Sports EditorIts overtime you have the football and

one score will win it Whats a team to doIf a team has an excellent kicker and is

smart it will just kick the field goal take thestate championship trophy and run Carmelhas an excellent kicker and the Greyhoundshave been pretty smart about football overthe past few decades

My assistants offered the idea and itmade a lot of sense said Carmel coach JohnHebert That way if we bobbled the snap orsomething like that we could down it andthen kick the next one Fortunately we gotit down and kicked it through and we won

The Hounds were victorious in one ofthe craziest IHSAA state championship

games on record Carmel edged CenterGrove 16-13 in overtime to win the Class6A championship Friday night at Lucas OilStadium Its the first state title for theGreyhounds since 2011 and their eighthoverall

It was a 27-yard field goal by ConnerCoghlan that secured the win for CarmelCoghlan had already kicked two previousfield goals plus an extra point after JeromeHalsell that gave the Greyhounds the leadfor the first time at 13-10 with under aminute to go in the fourth quarter

Its a dogfight out there said CoghlanCenter Grove is a good team so any pointswe can get were going to take

The Trojans had 46 seconds left in orderto answer back A key defensive play came

when Center Grove had 2nd-and-3 at its own34 Trojans quarterback Jack Kellamslaunched a pass to Russ Yeast but theGreyhounds Jalen Walker was there todeflect it away

I saw Russ coming down the sidelineand I knew their quarterback was going tothrow to him no matter what so I was justtrying to get over and make a play saidWalker Im a little disappointed I didnttake the ball and end the game right thereBut we finished strong we finished thatgame out

Eventually Center Grove got down tothe Carmel 33 and decided to try for a fieldgoal with one second left The first try wasinterrupted by a Greyhounds timeout but

Luke Eckert nailed a 50-yarder on hissecond attempt

Thus the score was tied at 13-13 and itwas on to overtime Carmel won the toss andopted to play defense on the first drivegiving the Trojans the ball at the 10-yardline

Titus McCoy rushed the ball down to the1 on the first play But as it had been doingall game the Greyhounds defense came upwith a huge play of its own Ben Learyforced a fumble and Austin Newlandrecovered it With that Carmel had the balland had kept Center Grove off the overtimescoreboard

Center Grove did take a timeout rightbefore Coghlan made his kick but that justdelayed the game-winner by a minuteCoghlan easily put the ball through themiddle of the goal

I had no idea that I was going to kick itright away but I was ready said CoghlanI was ready to go and ready to give my teama win

Carmels victory was a remarkableshowcase of courage and toughness TheGreyhounds had to absorb six turnovers inthe game (four lost fumbles and twointerceptions) in order to get themselves ina winning position But Carmels defensekept coming through time and again

Its not a pretty game you know saidHebert Things dont go the way you alwayswant them to You make mistakes just likein life but its how you respond to them Wehave each others back and I think that wasevident tonight

The way our defense played we werentgoing to let Center Grove have anythingeasy We held them to 10 points in the firsthalf when we had three turnovers and thenwe had three more turnovers in the secondhalf and we gave up three We gave ouroffense a chance to win it and they did

Center Grove scored first with Eckertkicking a 25-yard field goal with 214 leftin the first quarter The Trojans then gottheir lone touchdown of the game whenMcCoy punched the ball in from the 1-yardline with 252 remaining in the secondperiod Eckerts kick made the score 10-0

But that gave Carmel enough time to getsome points of its own The Greyhoundsmoved the ball from their 27 to the CenterGrove 25 thanks to solid short passing fromJake McDonald Once at the 25 with twoseconds left Coghlan booted in a 42-yardfield goal

Coghlan would be called on again tokick and he did at the 743 mark of the thirdquarter His 22-yard field goal made thescore 10-6 After that the defenses tookover and neither team got close to the endzone again until the end of regulation

The drive that got Carmel in a winningposition started ironically after CenterGroves PJ Buck blasted a 66-yard puntdown to the Greyhounds 13-yard line Thatset a new record for longest punt ever in a6A championship game

So Carmel had to go 87 yards And itdid with Halsell leading the charge Hemade eight carries in the Greyhounds drive

culminating with an 11-yard run in to theend zone

He doesnt do things pretty but hestough and he just keeps going said HebertIm really proud of him I think hes capableof doing great things in life Im just happythat hes the one that scored that lasttouchdown because he deserved it

Halsell wound up carrying the ball 29times for 142 yards by far the leading rusherof either team McDonald passed the ballsolidly completing 17 of 27 for 197 yardsKurt Rafdal had the most catches with eightreceptions for 82 yards

John Hokanson led the Carmel defensewith eight total tackles (six solo and twoassists) including one for a loss Jack Van

Remortel and Logan Burgess each made onesack Burgess also had two tackles for a lossLeary wound up with two forced fumblesincluding the one in overtime that put theHounds in a position to win

Carmel completed its season with a 10-4record At the midpoint of the regularseason the Greyhounds were 2-3 butfinished by winning eight of its last ninegames

I wouldnt have had it go any otherway said Hebert The losses taught us somany things and we used those lessons tobetter ourselves and I just wouldnt have hadit any other way

By WHEAT HOTCHKISSCourtesy nbacompacersThe Pacers snapped a three-game home losing streak in

emphatic fashion on Friday night at Bankers LifeFieldhouse Indiana (8-9) put on an offensive clinic rollingto a 118-97 win over the Brooklyn Nets (4-11)

After Wednesdays loss to Atlanta Indianas veteranssaid they needed to to play with better cohesion on theoffensive end making more cuts off the ball and gettingeverybody involved in the offense

Weve just been preaching all week (we said) afteryesterdays practice we wanted to move the ball and playtogether as a team Pacers point guard Jeff Teague saidWe all had to make some sacrifices and thats what we didtonight

They certainly looked like they turned a page on Fridayas they shot a season-best 552 percent and had six differentplayers score in double figures in the victory

We had fun Pacers forward Glenn Robinson III whoscored a team-high 20 points said after the win We hadfun playing tonight We want to play like that every night

The Pacers took an early 6-2 lead but Brooklyn quicklysurged back in front The Nets scored on nine consecutivepossessions reeling off 11 unanswered points as part of thatstretch

The Nets led by as many as seven points in the openingminutes but the Pacers surged back closing the first quarterwith a 14-3 run to take a five-point lead into the second

The Blue amp Gold extended their lead to double digits inthe second quarter and led by as many as 18 points before

halftime They could have led by even more if not for 10early turnovers

The hosts put the game away quickly after halftimeIndiana scored on 10 of its first 13 possessions out of thegate opening the third quarter with a 24-8 run that pushedtheir lead to 31 points The Nets never threatened the restof the way as the Pacers cruised to a comfortable victoryavenging an Oct 28 loss in Brooklyn

The Pacers won despite playing without several keypieces on Friday night Paul George (sore left ankle and soreback) was a late scratch joining Kevin Seraphin (sore leftknee) and CJ Miles (sore left knee) in street clothesGeorge a three-time All-Star has now missed five ofIndianas first 17 contests

During the first quarter of Fridays game the teamannounced that George and Seraphin will also miss thePacers next two contests Indiana host the Los AngelesClippers on Sunday and then tips off a four-game road tripon Wednesday night in Portland There is no timetable forMiles return

George still played a motivational role in the win The26-year-old captain called a team meeting after Thursdayspractice helping set the tone for Fridays turnaround

He just told us we need more movement we need tocommunicate just as much on offense as we do on defenseRobinson said And to have funI think we really tookthat to heart

Robinson starting in place of George went 4-for-6 from3-point range and finished with a career-best 20 points andfive rebounds

Anytime I see Glenn playing well it gives me energyPacers center Myles Turner said It gets me excited it getsme going I love it when Glenns making an impact

Rodney Stuckey tallied 18 points off the bench on 7-of-9shooting getting off his silky-smooth mid-range jumper atwill

Turner added 16 points and eight rebounds for Indianawhile Al Jefferson also scored 16 points off the benchMonta Ellis chipped in 14 points while making all six of hisshot attempts and Thaddeus Young scored 11 points againsthis former team

Teague didnt score in double figures but very nearlyregistered his first career triple-double Teague had ninepoints a career-high nine rebounds and eight assists inunder 24 minutes but sat the final 1522 rather than chasethe statistical mark with the game well out of reach

I was told (how close I was) Teague said after thegame I looked up (at the scoreboard) a couple times andI started getting a little thirsty I think thats why it didnthappen

Center Brook Lopez led Brooklyn with 20 points in theloss going 8-for-13 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-pointrange Sean Kilpatrick added 16 for the Nets who have nowlost six straight contests

The Pacers will close out a four-game homestand onSunday night when they host the Clippers at 600 PM ETThat will end a stretch in which Indiana hosts eight of ninegames at The Fieldhouse After Sundays win the Pacershave gone 4-4 thus far over that span

Pacers win get six players in double figures
