Shmueli woke up withstart. Opening his eyeshe quickly got out ofbed and washed Nelas Yadayim.

Aer making a bracha and pungon his tzitzis, Shmulli looked at his

calendar. Yud Av/ July 17 read

    the date.

    Todays the day!!! Shmulli ex-

    claimed.

This was the day that all the

boys in Camp Achdus had been

    ancipang for close to two

weeks. Finally, aer a long wait

    they were going swimming!

I cant wait! Shmulli said, excit-

edly, as he got into his carpool.

    Shmulli could see the excitement

in the other boys eyes. They were

    eagerly awaing that nal moment

when they could jump back into

    the pool.

    ACCORDINGto Wikipe-dia, in phys-

    ics and chemistry, heat is

    energy transferred between

a closed system and its sur-

roundings by mechanismsother than work. If thats

true, then this week is gonna

    be hot! You thought last

week was hot? Hah! Jokes on

    you my friend. Between the

    heat index, the humidity, the

Sun, the stars, and the hole in

    the ozone layer, Camp

    Achdus will bake this week!

But, due to the forethought of

our great leaders RabbisGedalia and Tuvia Gold-

    stein, air conditioning is

    lowing freely throughout the

    Camp Achdus grounds! The

    basic concept behind air con-

    ditioning was employed by

    the Jews in Ancient Egypt,

    where reeds were hung in

    windows and moistened

    with trickling water. The

    evaporation of

    water cooled the

    air blowing

    through the win-

    dow. This con-

    cept has been

    passed down

    through genera-tions of Gold-

    steins. They are

    now sharing this

    incredible age-

    old knowledge with the staff

    and campers of Camp

    Achdus. We are eternally

    indebted to you, Rabbis Gold-

    stein! Now, for the weekly

    wrap-up.

    Aer Davening and

learning it was me for the

    days acvies.

    When are we going

    swimming? Shmulli asked

    with baited breath.

    Well, it looks like we

    have a few acvies before

    its me for swimming, his

    counselor responded.

    Shmulli couldnt wait.

    The me had come. The

    busses had arrived and

    were loading. The ride was

lled with singing and sto-rytelling, as usual, and

    then the moment had

    arrived. They were there. It

almost felt as if me itself

    had stopped as Shmulli

    hopped o the bus and

    swily walked into the

    building. Already in his

    bathing suit and goggles,

    Shmulli was ready. He

jumped into the crystalclear water. It felt like a

breath of fresh air as he

    swam around. All his

    friends were there. They

    were splashing and having

a blast. As Shmulli came u

for a breath of air he real-

    ized that today wasnt a

    special day. Every day in

    Camp Achdus is special.

Another Day in Camp Achdus (connued from Page 1)

    W

    hat should teens and pre-

    teens do on Tisha Bava

    day when there is no

camp, no breakfast, and nothing to do?And how do the same boys ind meaning

in a day which doesnt speak to them? Last

year, for the irst time, Camp Achdus

    counselors addressed these questions. On

    Tisha Bav

    morning,

    campers and

    counselors

    came together

    for a teen-

friendly kinosprogram. The kinos were presented and

brought to life by leading personalities of

our communities, with a focus on drawing

out meaningful and inspiring messages for

    our local youth.

The program seemed to ind an im-

portant niche, with 4 people participat-

ing in the inaugural event. Campers and

counselors came away with an increased

awareness of the tragedy of Tisha Bav, as

well as some ideas on how to help makethis Tisha Bav the last.

This years program met with even

    greater success, attracting boys and

men ages to + from Rhawnhurst and

Somerton, as well as almost twenty more

who listened via teleconference. The list of

    speakers included Rabbi Gedalia Gold-

stein, Rabbi Avi Nulman, Rabbi Akiva

Pollack, R Zevi Carlebach, Rabbi Tuvia

    Goldstein, Rabbi Zecharya Michelsohn,

Rabbi Chaim Juni, Rabbi Moshe Ungar,

    and Rabbi Yitzchok Leizerowski.

Following the program, many stayed to

watch a most moving video, produced by

    the Chafetz Chaim Foundation, about

    ahavas yisroel.

The inspiring speeches are available for

download at no cost from our website,

    The performance was

    about a King who wants

    to reward his most loyal

    himself and mingleamongst the common

    folk. He inally inds a

    poor repair man who is

    absolutely loyal to the

    Carlebach and the dedicated

    staff who made this morning

    possible!

    Wednesday

    A commotion breaks out in

the halls of Camp Achdus. Eve-

    ryone is talking, everyone is

excited! Could it really be true?

Can it be that the greatest tal-

ent in Camp Achdus history is

    back and better than ever?

    Yes! The one and onlyA.D.

    Horwitz has returned from his

year long sabbatical to the Ho-

ly Land. His irst order of busi-

ness is to run Camptime! Each

bunk donates a few camperswho will join the APACHE

    RACES! Water Gulping, Shoe

    removing, EZ Rolling, Bat Spin-

ning and Mary Had a Little

Lambing are all part of the fun.

Its great to have you back,

A.D.! And then, we are off to

swimming! Its the irst time in

nine days that we actually put

on bathing suits, and, ahhh, is

it refreshing! The moldy hall-ways of the YMCA have never

    smelled so good! Serge the

    Cosmonaut has returned to

    teach us the

    Russian Back-

    stroke. The

    Game Room is

    once again not

    available! Ya-hoo! The bus

    gets us back to

    camp just a bit

late but, hey, its worth it. Who

    wouldnt want another few

    moments of Camp Achdus

    magic?!

    Thursday

    The Kiratorium is lying

this morning. Not with foot-balls, silly. We are not allowed

to play sports in there! No, it is

    the Kol Torah! The angelic

    campers and staff of Camp

    Achdus are learning up a

    storm. Our beloved Rabbi

    Zecharya Michelsohn has

    created a Ritas-Pizza-Canteen

    contest! Mitoch Shelo Lishmah

Ba Lishmah has not been so

successful since the days ofSura and Pumbedisa!

    Our league playoff series

has begun for the elder divi-

    sion of

    Camp and it

    is getting

    quite com-

    petitive!

    Three soc-cers and a

    hockey! That

    gives you

    one big Cholent with Kishke,

    Herring and Kigel! Whats

that net being set up by Rab-

    bi Akiva and Pinchas

    Oshinsky in the meadow

    (A.K.A. Field # 3)? Its a really

    cool volleyball court, all

ready for the Head Staffvs.staff volley ball game! Un-

    fortunately, due to some

    technical dificulties (like

    certain Head Staff being too

busy to play), it became in-

    town staffvs. out-of-town

staff. The pressure was on as

    the campers cheered for their

    counselors. The games were

    close. But, most importantly,

    Rabbi Akiva inally got some

exercise! Oh and did I mention

they were a lot of fun! Tzvikie

    Gerstein took front

    center for the out-of

    -towners andAn-

    drew Brenner for

    the in-towners. The

    games were split in

    the end. What a

    great time for all! A

    shortened lunch

followed. But therewas still time for a

    little singing, danc-

    ing and magic! Eve-

    rybody wants

    Moshiach Now!

    And now its off to

    swim for all those

    who wanted to

    swim. The water

was wet as usual, but not too

wet! Well, the day is over

    and...everyone goes home?

    NOT A CHANCE!!!! At Camp

    Achdus, everything goes and

the day is extended in order t

    bring our lovely happy smiley

    faces to the Millenium Skate

    World in an extremely fancy

    neighborhood in Camden New

    Jersey! Skates and Blades are

handed out and the skate loo

is turned into an Achdus Won

    derland. Jewish Music is blast

    ing as Motty Brennan and

Moishy Kremansky are skating for their lives (literally!)

    The largest skating chain in

    Camp Achdus history was al-

    most made! We only needed

three more people to hit the

600 mark. So close, yet so far!

    Immanuel Gola and Eli

    Vaynberg did some really co

    skating tricks and Rabbi Ge-

    This is a solicitation...

    ut not for money. Please

    ead...Gevurah is the Hebrew

    ord for strength. In particular,

    vurah refers to moral strength,

e kind that is needed to defeat

    e yetzer hara (evil inclination)

nd do good deeds that one inds

    allenging.

For the past week, we have

    een collecting gevurah notes

    bout campers from their coun-

lors. Each gevurah note is en-

    red into its owner's personal

vurah chart, which is saved on

y computer. When a chart is

    mpleted, its owner receives a

ize and the chart is printed

    nd sent home.

    Campers who are brought to

me with a gevurah note are so

excited because they feel so good

    about themselves! One camper

    who had previously been

    brought to me numerous times

    for negative reasons now comes

to me on his own throughout the

day to tell me about all the good

things he is doing! The irst time

I spoke to him, I had to convince

him that he is not a bad boy.

One week later, he is lying high

on all of the positive attention

that he is receiving and needs no

    convincing!! Another boy had

gotten into a rut from all of the

    negative attention he was receiv-

ing for not listening to his coun-

selor and was not open to cor-

rection. I told him that I was

surprised that he gotten into any

kind of trouble because he issuch a good boy and challenged

him to begin illing his gevurah

    chart right away by apologizing

to his counselor, which he did!

Focusing on our past good deeds

    and potential for excellence in-

    fuses us with self-conidence and

    the will to excel further!

And if you think that older

children will not go for this kind

of childish incentive, let me tell

    you what happened tonight, in

my home. Some of my staff came

to my house for melava malka.

While they were here, I asked

them to share with me positive

    information about their camp-

    ers. One counselor in particular

had a lot of positive information

to share. When I saw this, I

    opened this counselor's gevurah

    chart and made an entry:

    Shared a

    lot of posi-

    tive infor-

    mation

    about his

    campers.

    This coun-

selor and his friend were sur-

prised to see that I have gevurahcharts for staff members as well.

A moment later, I watched as

    these two counselors straight-

ened up the toys in my living

    room! They wanted more en-

    tries on their charts!! Everyone,

no matter what age, yearns for

    and thrives on positive attention.

Dear parents, this is a s

    tation. Please give me your

    gevurah entries! Please sha

Do youknow thata porcu-pine can be made of

    twigs and leaves? The

    boys in bunk Alef Kaan

    do! We took a short

    walk outside and found

    all the things we need-

ed to help us decorateour porcupines. Our

    porcupines had some

    really cool quills!

    MONSTERS!!!! Bunk

    Daled Kaan was lled

    with them, some had

    one eye, some had two,

    and some had even

    more! There were

    some with big teeth and

    some with tails. But,

    don't worry; they were

    just small puppets.

    Weaving a coaster

    with newspaper strips is

not as easy as you may

    think. The greatest

    diculty that you may

    encounter is keeping

the woven strips inplace while weaving

    each subsequent

    strip. You should also

    beware of inky ngers,

    stained by bleeding

    newspaper ink. But,

    don't despair; your n-

    ished product will make

    all of your hard work

    pay o!

    This Week

    Mizrach signs de-

    picng the Kotel were

    what we painted this

    week. We remember

    that on Tisha B'Av many

    horrible tragedies hap-

    pened to us. All we

    have remaining of our

    beauful Temple is the

    Western Wall, where

    many go to pray each

    day. In our homes and

    shuls when we daven

    (pray) we face to the

    east (mizrach) in the

    direcon of Jerusalem.

    Wow, what an

    incredible irst

    half we had

    cant believe its

    over!

    Dont worry,

    though. The bes

    is yet to come!

    See ya next

    week!

Oops! Last weeks issue of theAchdus

Times erroneously reprinted Mrs.Lipskys article from two weeks ago. We

at the Times ofice rarely err, but we ix

our mistakes when we make em. Hereis the true last weeks article:

MRS. DORIS L IPSKY This Week in the Arts

    dalia Goldstein did some back-

wards stuff that made Rabbi Akiva

look like an amateur. Even though

    Rabbi Akiva has been

    skating for most of his

    Camp Achdus life! [Not-

    so-]hot pretzels were

    served with Americancheese. Yummy! The

    childrens bellies were

    illed and they were

    once again able to re-

    turn to the skating rink

    with renewed vigor!

    The buses pulled out

    of the Millenium park-

ing lot at 6:15 pm with

    Yehuda 10&baum on

    blades, hanging on to

the back with one hand and play-

ing guitar with the other. Quite a

sight on Interstate 95. Wow! What

    a talented counselor. Camp Achdus

is so lucky to have him on staff!

    Well, Tomorrow is

    another day at the

    greatest camp in

    the world!

    Friday
