October marks the harvest season, and Thanksgiving. This is
an appropriate time to reflect and appreciate the prosperous
school, community and country in which we are all fortunate
to live and learn. Learning involves challenge, and
challenges are rarely easy. With a collective growth mindset,
cooperation, and a positive effort to work together, we
continue to build a strong school and community. I was
pleased to see this reflected in a recent school grade nine
math survey, which indicated that a great majority of grade
nine math students find math challenging, but at the same
time like math, and feel they are good at it.
Graduation is a long way off, June 27th, 2019 to be exact. For
the past four years, our Commencement Exercises have been
held at the Bradford Community Centre. For a variety of
reasons, we are investigating alternate locations for
Commencement 2019. Grade twelve students’ and parents’
thoughts are appreciated. Students should direct ideas to the
Student Council via grade 12 reps, and parents can contact
the School Council, at [email protected] . A
decision will likely be made after our next School Council
Meeting on October 17th.
Best wishes for a prosperous fall season.
Peter Stone

INFORMATION ITEMS
Notes from our BDHS Guidance Department:
College Information:
The 2019-2020 college application will open soon at ontariocolleges.ca. Students are encouraged
to start their research into programs and admission requirements. As soon as the application is
open Guidance will let students know.
BDHS will be hosting a College Fair on October 11th from 5:00pm-7:30pm in the cafetorium. This
is a great opportunity to interact with college representatives, ask questions and gather
information. All grades are welcome.
BDHS will also be taking a bus of students to the Ontario College Fair on October 24th . The cost
is $10 per student and permission forms are available in Guidance. All grades are welcome;
however, preference will be given to Grade 12 students.
University Information:
The 2019-2020 university application will be open at the end of November. To apply, students
must have a PIN number which will be sent to BDHS in mid-November. Once they arrive students
will be notified. BDHS will be hosting a University Information Night on October 23rd from
6:30pm-8:30pm in the cafetorium. All of Ontario’s universities will be in attendance. This is a
great opportunity to interact with university representatives, ask questions and gather
information. All grades are welcome. Students are encouraged to start their research into
programs and admission requirements at electronicinfo.ca.
Community Service Hours:
Guidance would like to congratulate the Grade 9 students who completed community service
hours over the summer! To celebrate, the Hospitality program cooked a delicious breakfast on
September 28th. Every student needs a minimum of 40 hours of community service to graduate.
There are a variety of ways to achieve these hours such as volunteering with a community
organization, charity or religious organization. Hours cannot be completed for a business or
during school hours. More information can be found on the school or board website or in
guidance.
Take Our Kids to Work Day:
On November 14th all Grade 9 students from BDHS will be participating in the province wide
Take Our Kids to Work Day. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the world of
work while shadowing a parent, relative or family friend at their place of employment. This
unique opportunity allows students to explore different professions and start to plan what career
path they would like to pursue. Families are encouraged to start organizing a placement for their
child now. Permission forms and information will be distributed in October.

School Bus Safety Week and School Bus Driver
Appreciation Day
School Bus Safety Week takes place October 22
to 26, 2018. To support schools in promoting
school bus safety to students, the Simcoe
County Student Transportation Consortium
(SCSTC), in partnership with school bus
operators, will offer bus evacuation training to
all home-to-school transported students. During
this week, school bus drivers will educate
students on how to evacuate a school bus safely
in an emergency situation. Wed., Oct. 24 is
School Bus Driver Appreciation Day in the
province of Ontario. It’s a great opportunity for
the school community to thank our bus drivers
for all their hard work transporting students to
and from school safely. For more information,

with quick access to their children’s attendance and grades and includes the option to sign up for email notifications.
To access the Parent Portal, parents/guardians will need their child’s SCDSB Pupil ID Number, which can be found on
the Student Information Verification Form, as well as an Access ID. The Access ID will be provided in a sealed letter this
fall with instructions on how to create an account. If you lose the Access ID, you can visit us in the school office and
we’ll provide it to you after verifying your identity.
Vaping: What’s the harm? (for secondary schools)
E-cigarette vaping is being promoted as less harmful than smoking cigarettes, but that doesn’t mean it is harmless. Far
from it! Studies are underway to determine the long term risks of vaping. What is known, however, is that vaping is
becoming more popular with Ontario students. They risk becoming addicted to the nicotine found in the many flavours
of e-juices available with attractive smells and tastes. Vaping, like tobacco, is banned on school property at all times,
but the newer vaping devices can be easy to disguise and use without attracting attention. It’s important we work
together at school and home to talk about vaping and encourage our kids to make healthy, vape- and tobacco-free
lifestyle choices. Find out more at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.
