HISTORY OF BRADLEY-BOURBONNAIS

COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

The first high school, which offered a three-year course, was established in 1898 by Professor Sutton but was discontinued in 1903. The school was held in the southwest room, second floor, of what is now Bradley Grade School.

The high school was reestablished in 1909 by Professor Hortleb. In 1911 and 1913 additions were made to accommodate the increase in enrollment.

The first graduating class of 1901 consisted of five members. The present graduating class is composed of thirty-six members.

BR I EF RE V IE WS In 1939, sixty-eight boys and girls trooped onto the set of Bradley-

Bourbonnais Community High School to begin the first of four pictures, "Freshman Year." This being a new experience, naturally we were bewildered and confused, but soon we swung into the routine without shaking knees.

For producer and backer we had Miss Brock, and the whole class chose Stanley Bujnowski, our director; Jesse Wilder, assistant; Beatrice Schrader, secretary; and Geraldine Williams, treasurer.

General Science, Practical Mathematics, Social Problems, English and Shop Work all fitted perfectly together to form an adequate background and setting in our first picture.

Since most of us had made a mental contract to complete four pictures while on this lot, sixty-one of us came back cheerfully the next September to star in another picture, this one being called "Sophomore Year."

Because of the popularity our first successful picture had brought us, we were gratefully blessed with two producers, Miss Brock and Mr. Larson. Mr. Larson, however, became more interested in flying airplanes and we sorrowfully saw him leave. Soon Mr. Berquist appeared upon the scene to fill his shoes, which he did competently.

In filming this picture, the cast chose Jesse Wilder, director; Harry Tighe, assistant; and Harold Knickerbocker, secretary-treasurer.

While making this picture we experienced contacts with Algebra, World History, Home Economics, Shop Work, English II, and Latin I.

With two successful performances behind us, forty-eight performers came back in 1941 to film one of the most important pictures in our career, "Junior Year."

While making this picture we really worked to prepare a Prom for the Seniors. We paid our dues; sold candy, pop, and ice cream at the football and basketball games; sold basketball schedule pencils; sponsored a movie; sponsored a dance; and had a Junior Play entitled "Comin' Thru The Rye."

To assist us with our task we again had Miss Brock and Mr. Berquist. Jesse Wilder, Richard Kinneman, Lorraine Marlaire, and Josephine Tomaszewski took over the directing and supervising.

CLOSE UPS AND LONG SHOTS

As we view scenic Illinois, we first come to the busy city of East St. Louis where a beautiful exclusive beauty salon immediately attracts our attention. To my surprise, it is owned by an old schoolmate of mine—Margie Vickery. As we travel down the street, who should we find com-ing toward us but Gerry Boudreau in a snappy aviatrix uniform. She is flying for Commercial Airlines now. She tells us that she just saw Don Chaplinski and he is enjoying a comfortable living by his tool-die making. Another unusual building catches our eye. It is the "Hall of Fame" theatre operated by Donna Chafey. There walking into the theatre is another classmate—Don Martin. He is one of the Yankees most valuable baseball players. Going farther, we see some beautiful horses being auctioned off. Could that well-dressed person be Harry Tighe? Of course, he is selling another lot of his famous Kentucky horses.

After leaving behind this interesting city. we come to our state-capitol —Springfield. We catch Alice Book as she comes out of the largest pub-lishing houses here, where she is employed. In the busiest section of town, we see a unique chain store owned by Harold Knickerbocker. He is mak-ing plans to extend his stores out to the Coast. And there in a booth en-joying a tempting lunch are three of my old friends—Josephine Tomaszewski. Alice Friedewold, and Isabelle Hoverstock. They are all working as secretaries in the main business offices in town. Here also we find Jerry Williams who is kept busy by her grade school teaching and by the various clubs o which she belongs.

Since our time is fleeting, we go on to industrial Peoria. As we pass a huge hospital, we see Lorraine Marlaire coming out just then in a neat nurse:. uniform. Downtown, we see that Jesse Wilder has opened another of his famous grocery stores and is doing very nicely. The sound of music comes to us and we see the large dancing school which Isabelle Richmond conducts. Through one of the windows of a radio station, we see Juanita Pray who is starring in a new radio serial. Bob Sizemore's band is down here on a special appearance. A smart ladies' fashion store owned by Ida Beever is prospering nicely.

Our next stop is at the familiar town of Bradley. Although the town is changed in appearance, winning athletic teams and enthusiastic crowds still come from Bradley. We meet Elmer Jamnick—a famous traveler

Page 14: Bradley - Bourbonnais Community High School B B C H Sbhsil.org/people_places_folder/bradley_public_sch_images/bhs_1943... · Bradley - Bourbonnais Community High School . B B C H

who has stopped over especially to see Bradley compete for its fifth championship title. We are told that Phyllis Bilyard and Doris Stokes have teaching positions in the grade school erected recently. Violet Hoehn has married her high school sweetheart and is living happily. While the St. Louis Cardinals are on a short vacation, their manager, Richard Kinneman. is visiting Bradley for old times' sake. Richard Fellows is successfully filling the position of principal at the new high school .

As we leave the scene of by-gone memories, we come to Joliet. Here among the hustle and bustle, w see a profitable chain hardware store owned by Robert Bell. Over in the park, a girls' baseball team is practicing and the manager is Mary Wilson. She is talking to Theresa Zasada about the roller-skating performance that Theresa is to give here tonight. The girls tell us that Paul Lehnig is doing very nicely as a movie scout. As we pass the residential district, we notice an especially lovely home. It is the home of Violet Hawkins and her husband. Near one of the factories, a young inventor, Dave Hawkins to be exact, is talking to the plant manager about his invention.

The last stop of our trip is the largest city in Illinois, Chicago. One of the first things we see is Stanley Bujnowski's ultra-modern night club where Ronnie Arseneau's band is playing for a limited engagement. As we go by Mary Ruth Lehman's recently erected bowling alley, we see Janice Hasemeyer and Beatrice Schrader patronizing it. Janice now works for the Movie Mirror Magazine and Beatrice is doing Civil Service work here. As we turn the corner and start for the subway, we have a suspicion that we are being followed. We finally get a glimpse of Ray Ignatowicz who greets us with a smile. He is doing private detective work.

As we leave pleasant memories and scenery behind, we know that the Class of 1943 has surely been a success at whatever it has done.

The activities of the Band this year were somewhat limited. Because of transformational difficulties, the Kankakee Valley Music Festival was not held. Perhaps the greatest activity of the Band this year was its partici-pation at most of the home basketball games. Participation in such patriotic activities as Labor Day celebrations, etc., also made up a part of the Band Program.

BRIEF REVIEWS

An important background was provided by Shorthand I, Typing I, English III, Geometry, Latin II, Shop Work, Civics, and Economics.

"Senior Year." The most important picture of our career is our last picture on the Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School lot. Thirty-six players contributed their talents and because of its importance, it was filmed in technicolor. The country is anxiously awaiting its release.

The producers were Miss Norrington and Miss Willis. The director was Jesse Wilder; assistant director, Richard Kinneman; secretary, Violet Hoehn; and treasurer, Elmer Jamnick.

While making this picture, we were really busy, having our pictures taken, editing the Annual, choosing name cards and invitations, getting our class rings, and similar duties that come to every Senior class.

The background and setting of the picture consisted of English IV, Geometry, U. S. History, Shorthand II, Typing II, Aeronautics, Speech Arts, and Chemistry.

Having completed four years of movie making we consider it the most interesting and profitable profession. We hope that at least one of them rates an Academy Award.

ATHLETICS The past season brought back to Bradley the very, capable Coach Pete

Laffey and a successful year of sports. The cooperation of the players, fans and faculty aided much in the

improvement of this year's sports calendar. Three captains who deserve much credit for Bradley's success are Donald Martin and Earl Benoche, co-captains in football and Harry Tighe, captain of the basketball team.

May Bradley's success and sportsmanship continue through the years to come.
