Older Americans Month, originally
called Senior Citizens Month, was estab-
lished in 1963 by President Kennedy.
The theme for this year’s Older Ameri-
cans Month, “Age Out Loud” is intended
to give older Americans a new voice; one
that reflects what today’s older adults
have to say about aging. More then ever
before, older Americans are working
longer and staying focused on their
health by staying active. They expect to
continue to live their lives to the fullest,
and they’re insisting on changes that
make that possible. The theme shines a
light on and amplifies the voices of older
Americans, raising awareness of issues
seniors across the country are facing.
We are here to help you stay active,
healthy and knowledgeable with our
Living Healthy, Matter of Balance, Tai
Chi, and Diabetes Self-Management
Workshops.

Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, Decoration Day was established. It was determined that Decoration Day would be observed May 30th. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The first observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery. It was not until after World War I that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday and celebrated the last Monday in May. To ensure the sacrifices of America’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, “The National Moment of Remembrance Act” was signed into law in December 2000. The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are a 3 p.m. on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.
