Brain Function
By Anna Paul and Natalie Maes
The Three Parts of the Brain
The adult brain is composed of three major divisions: the Cerebrum,
Cerebellum and the Brainstem.
The Cerebrum • Making up most of (80-85%) of the brain are the right and left
hemispheres of the cerebrum. • Beneath the convoluted surfaces lies the cerebral cortex.• Sensations are imaged and interpreted, movements are planned,
memories are stored and retrieved and complex judgments are made.
The Cerebrum Cont. The four lobes are found in this section of the brain:• The Frontal Lobe- involved with cognitive activities (planning deciding, and
pursuing goals) The Motor Strip is the this lobe and controls more than 600 voluntary muscles
• The Parietal Lobe- controls incoming sensory. The Sensory strip is in this love and it processes information about temperature, touch, body position, and pain
• The Occipital Lobe- The major destination for visual information• The Temporal Lobe- There are two temporal lobes, one on each
hemisphere. The destination for Auditory information. Contains some centers for speech in the left temporal lobe
The Cerebellum
• The second largest divison in the brain called the CEREBELLUM.
• Made up of two hemishperes. • The cerebellum cordinates ongoing musclar movements
and helps mantains proper posture, equillirbrium.
The Brainstem
• This lies anterior to the cerebellum and inferior to the
diencephalom. • At the superior end is the mesencephalon which means
midbrain. • One of the functions is to control the reflex tracking
movements of the head, neck, eyes, and ears.• The inferior part of the BRAINSTEM is called the medulla
oblongata.• Many of the brains neurons synapase here, so that
information can be relayed to the higher parts of the brain.
The Brainstem Cont.
• Nuclei in the medulla oblongata are involved with 5 of the the crainal nerves, and they also control many of the body's vitals. o heart rateo blood pressure o breathing
• And non-vital o sneezingo coughing.
Major parts of the brain
• Pituitary gland- Controls sensory information coming into the Brain.
• Corpus Callosum- Millions of nerve fibers that connect the two hemispheres.
• Amygdala- An almond shaped part of the brain that controls aggression and also is involved in memory and emotion.
• Hippocampus- Associated with learning and memory and emotions.
Major Parts of the Brain Cont.
• Thalamus- Bulge at the top of the brain stem. Relay messages from the brain to the body, and vice versa.
• Hypothalamus- Size of a pearl. Regulates hunger, thirst,
pleasure, fear, anger, sexual arousal and temperature. • Medula Oblongota- The center for breathing and beating of
the heart.
