STORY SHARING KITS (Pre-school, Kindergarten)OngoingCalling all daycare providers: Have we got a resource for you! What is a Story Sharing Kit? It is a storytime in a bag! Each kit is theme-based and supports the daycare curriculum with over 75 themes. The kits provide information in a variety of media: books, videos, CDs, puzzles, puppets, flannel board stories, activity guides and more. Check them out, and return them in the Main Library’s Children’s Unit. Daycare provider status must be verified. *TUMBLE INTO TUMBLEBOOKS (Pre-school, Elementary School)Tuesdays (No program Nov. 24)10 - 10:30 a.m.Warm up for our in-house storytime by enjoying a quick online story and game with Tumblebooks. Tumblebooks are animated, talking books presented online. Many of the books provide story-related puzzles and games and feature “Word Helper,” which allows children to click on words and hear them sounded out. Participants must be able to use a computer or be assisted by a caregiver.

*BIKE RODEO SPONSORED BY BIKE DURHAM (All Ages) Saturday, Sep. 1210:30 - 11:30 a.m.You are invited to the Main Library parking lot to learn and practice the fundamentals of bike safety and the rules of the road. Come decorate your bike, and join in the rodeo led by the knowledgeable folks at Bike Durham, a nonprofit organization that promotes safe cycling in Durham. Free helmet raffles are made possible by the Durham Bike Co-op, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching bike maintenance and repair as well as enabling bike ownership. (In the event of rain, the program will be held in the auditorium, but leave your bikes at home).

*ROLL SUSHI ROLL! (6-12 Year Olds) Saturday, Sep. 123:30 - 4:30 p.m.Join us for a yummy opportunity to learn the craft of sushi rolling from Ms. Soyoung. Children will learn how to roll sushi like a pro with fun, kid-friendly ingredients. Here’s the fun part: You get to eat what you make! Participants must be between the ages 6-12 and must be accompanied by a parent. Spaces are limited.

*THIS LITTLE PIGGY WENT WEE WEE WEE, ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK! (Pre-school) Thursday, Sep. 2410:30 - 11:30 a.m.If you are having trouble teaching your child the value of money, then join Binta Watkins and your local librarians for this fun-filled storytime, craft and information session. The program gives children suggestions on how to spend their money wisely and when to save it. Goodie packages will be provided by PNC Bank while supplies last.

*OH-MY-ORIGAMI (6-12 Year Olds)Saturday, Oct. 10 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Origami is a fascinating and creative craft for kids and children who like a challenge. Kids get a sense of satisfaction out of practicing this art, and they get experience at following instructions, increasing their skills and producing something fun and decorative. Recommended for children ages 6 -12, as scissors will be involved.

*LITTLE KIDS/BIG CHALLENGES: SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH INCARCERATED PARENTS (All Ages)Saturday, Oct. 1710:30 - 11:30 a.m.Join Melissa Radcliff and your favorite Sesame Street characters for an informative story and craft session exploring the emotions and feelings that may occur for children when a parent is incarcerated. The story session ends in a discussion introducing ways to combat the feelings of alienation that children can experience during this time. This program is great for parent and child.

*BAM, BOOM, BALLOON! (6-12 Year Olds) Saturday, Nov. 73:30 - 4:30 p.m.Put your creative hats on, and join us for this interactive, skill building program that teaches children how to make amazing balloon creations. Children will learn the intricate techniques of balloon sculpting, and what they make they get to take! Participants must be between the ages 6-12 and must have the hand strength and dexterity to twist and shape balloons.

*HOORAY FOR CROCHET! (6-12 Year Olds)Saturday, Nov. 14 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.If a child can sit still and manipulate a pencil, then he or she is generally ready to learn the basics of crochet. Children will “chain the hook,” move to a single stitch and then a double stitch. Hooks and yarn are provided, or bring your own. Sign up today!
