CONCERNING IMMINENT CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY
Brandon Avenue Green Street & Utilities Project Update
ITEMS OF INTEREST:
Between Thursday April 2, 2020 and Friday April 10, 2020, traffic patterns to Bice House, Bond House, South
Lawn, the K2 parking lots, and the Monroe Apartment Building’s lower garage level will be modified to allow
for concrete paver installation in areas ‘B’ and ‘C’ shown in the plan below.
Following the completion of work shown in Construction Alert 42 (Phase 1) on Wednesday April 1st,
contractors will start work on phases 2, 3, and 4 shown in the plan below.
Phases 2 & 3: On Thursday morning (4/2), contractors will close off area B, and will keep area C open to
vehicular traffic. Once the concrete pavers have been installed in area B, the contractor will switch and close off
area C, while keeping area B open to vehicular traffic. The contractor is expecting that paver installation in each
area will take 2-3 days to complete, however it could be longer or shorter depending on site conditions and
potential adverse weather conditions. Signage, barricades, and flaggers will be in place to help direct traffic
through the area during this work.
Phase 4: Once phases 2 and 3 have been completed, traffic patterns will again be changed to what is shown in
the Phase 4 plan below. The project team is expecting that the traffic patterns shown in this scenario will remain
in place until the completion of the project.
BACKGROUND:
In support of the redevelopment of the Brandon Avenue district, this project will install a new central UVA
utilities corridor that will serve the district, and will include new electrical ductbank lines, domestic waterlines,
chilled waterlines, low-temperature hot waterlines, telecom, and sanitary sewer and stormwater services. This
project will also construct a new “Green Street” that will include a bioretention median in the center of the new
one-way street around the district. In addition, the southern end of Monroe Lane will be realigned to a straighter
road alignment that will allow for better access to the UVA Endoscopy building and also allow for more green
space near the South Pond.
