The Branemark implant was developed in the early 1950’s by Professor Par-Ingvar Branemark.Professor Branemark was the first to discover the osseointegration aspect of titanium during hisresearch of bone healing in animals. Currently, Branemark implants, sold by Nobel Biocare ofZurich, Switzerland, are available in three separate platforms : Original Branemark, Branemark MK III & MK IV and NobelSpeedy Groovy Implants:

n Branemark 3.3mm diameter - Narrow Platform (NP) 3.5n Branemark 3.75 & 4.0mm diameter - Regular Platform (RP) 4.1 n Branemark 5.0 & 5.5mm diameter - Wide Platform (WP) 5.1

*New implants have been added to the Nobel Biocare / Branemark line. The new external heximplants are available in the same 3 platforms (NP, RP & WP) as the original Branemark and arerestoratively compatible. When ordering components always specify whether implant hasexternal hex or internal connection as the new implant names from Nobel Biocare have sim-ilar names for both connections.

Many other implant companies make implants that are restoratively compatible with theBranemark Regular Platform external hex implant. These companies include: OIC, 3i, Implamed,Zimmer, Interpore, Innova and Steri-Oss. These implants can use the same restorative compo-nents, as the implant platform, hex and internal threads are identical. The most widely used concept for bridge or single tooth replacement is the UCLA system. It iseconomical and has the widest range of application possibilities. For overdenture applications,the ORS (O-Ring System), the DDB (Direct Dalla Bona), the adjustable gold rider with bar, and theHader or Hader-EDS system are most frequently used.

Restorative Components:For ease in selecting components, the Branemark Section is divided by Restoration Connection:

• Direct To The Implant —or—

• Indirect To An Intermediate Component (Tissue Extensions/Abutments).Overdenture Attachments, Bar Systems, Indirect Individual Parts and Tools are found following in the Indirect Section.

The Direct Restorative Components are the elements used to fabricate a restoration that will be connected directly to the implant(s).

The Indirect / Intermediate Restorative Components fit to an intermediate tissue extension(abutment) which in turn is connected to the implant(s).

Intermediate Connector / Tissue Extension:The TE (Tissue Extension) also referred to as an abutment, is the intermediate connector between the implant and the restoration, it may extend above the tissue. In some instances, a TE extension is subgingival, to provide a more esthetic restoration.

Abutment Systems for Branemark Part 1 include: UMA, Multi-Use, StandardAbutment (SA) and HexCone (Estheticone).

Abutment Systems for Steri-Oss Part 3 include:

Implant Body:The implant body is surgically placed into the bone. One surgical method tradi-tionally involved a two-stage surgery, leaving the implant unloaded in the bone toallow for osseointegration, followed by tissue surgery to uncover the implantbefore the restorative components are added. Another method, called ImmediateLoading, is a one-stage surgery where the abutment and restoration are attachedto the implant at the time of implant placement.

Implant Standardization:The UMA tissue extension was developed to standardize the components andinstruments for many different implant allowing for an economical inventory andfor simplicity of restorative procedures. Its tapered/hexagon fitting surface is iden-tical, regardless of the size or type of implant employed, while its screw-in base isimplant specific.

The precision machined hex or non-hex UCLA GoldCylinders are available for single tooth, bridge and barrestorations. The gold cylinder has a snap-on machinedplastic extension (waxing sleeve).

The melting temperature of the gold cylinder is 2550 – 2710Fahrenheit or 1400-1490 Celsius. The gold cylinders are

made of a 58% gold alloy. Using a similar high gold contentalloy when casting is recommended. To avoid porcelaincracking, a minimum of 0.5mm casting alloy should sur-round the gold cylinder. To create complete casting aroundthe gold cylinder it is recommended to add extra thicknessof wax and reduce after casting.

The Natural Contour Abutment System wasdesigned by Attachments International to simu-late natural tooth contours and esthetics for sin-gle tooth and bridge implant restorations. Thegingival emergence of implant restorations cannow be ideally shaped to replicate the lost natural dentition.

A natural gingival emergence is createdthrough the tissue with the wide profile NCA

The UMA Abutment (tissue extension) is anintermediate component made to fit betweenthe implant and the restoration. The UMA has astandardized fitting surface, which allows theUMA restorative components to be interchange-able regardless of the implant type. The UMAHealing Cap protects the UMA until the restora-tion is delivered. The Bridge Tapered UMAImpression Coping transfers the UMA position

while the Hex UMA Impression Coping transfersthe hex orientation of the UMA Abutment. TheUMA Analog replicates the UMA for the model.The UMA Hex or Non-Hex Plastic Cylinders areused to make frameworks for bridges or bars. TheUMA CAL System is used for a passive fit tech-nique. Abutments (tissue extensions) are intermediatecomponents made to fit between the implantand the restoration. Restorations can be madeon the abutment using abutment cylinders. TheImpression Coping takes an impression of theabutment and transfers the abutment position.The Analog is a replica of the abutment and isused for fabrication of a master model.

The CSP is used for crown & bridge and barrestorations. The CAL Cylinders assure a passivefit. To attach the abutment use the Bio-Torq orLT/RA insertion systems.

For restorations that fit to the implant directly, referto the UCLA system.

The carbide reamers are used to refine the inter-nal access hole of a castable cylinder. They alsorefine the seat for the head of the screw. Eachcarbide reamer and Pin Vise are sold separately.The Pin Vise will fit all carbide reamers. (A)

The Lapping tools are used with diamond polish-ing paste to refine the fitting surface of the castcylinder. We recommend that you use it not morethan 5-6 times. For superior restorations, youmay want to use the 1 micron white diamondlapping paste. (B)
