    5. Could you tell us about your auditionexperience?

IgotprettygoodandIgotalsoluckyinmy Orchestra auditions. Every orchestralaudition it’s a new and different process. It’sverydemanding, notonlymusically, physicallybutalsomentally.

    6. How do you approach auditionpreparation?

I’ve always paid so much attention tothe mental part in order to be prepared toanything who can happen in the day of theaudition.It’samentalgame.Yourmindisverypowerful and complex.I try to use it in thesimplestwayandmakeitefficient!7. What are the previous day and theactualdayofanauditionlikeforyou?

    8.Whatdoyouconsidermostimportantwhenyouarelisteningontheothersideofthescreenasapanelmember?

    Forsure I’mlooking forclarity,rhythmaccuracy,projectionandmusicalphrasing.

    9.Couldyouhighlightanycrucialstepinyourmusicalcareer?

I think I got many moments in mymusicalcareerthathavehelpedtobringmeupto where I’m now as a musician and mostimportant, asahumanbeing.

I can consider that the release of my

first CD with my jazz fusion trio TGB“TubaGuitarraBateria” for tudo label CleanFeed in 2003 was one of those crucialmoments that represented a page turn up inmyartisticcareer, openedmanydoors formebothnationallyandinternationally.

    10.Haveyoueverthoughtaboutgivingupatanypointinyourcareer?

Yes,manytimes.Whenyouaretotallyinloveandfocusonwhatyoudo, youalwayswanttokeepimprovinginordertoachieveavery high standard of musical excellence.Unfortunately sometimes that’snot the bestidea andanot at all the healthiest thing foryour body. Sadly, I’ve experienced this firsthand. However, I realized that washappening earlyenough sowas able to findhelp and stay out of that stressful anddemandinghighlydemandinglifestyle. Iwastryingtoachieveperfectionismandtheonlything I was getting from it was negativity, stress, anxiety, loneliness, etc. Fortunately, Icould detect that wasn’t the right direction.Sincethen,I’velearnthowtomakemusicasa way to achieve musical excellence. It’s atotal different philosophy andway of living.Ithastotallytransformedmyselfasapersonaswellasamusician.

    11.Whatdoyouconsidera solidmusicaleducationmustbebasedon?

Inmyopinionandexperience,Ithinkthat in order to have a solid musicaleducation, the students should be aware ofthe extremely demandingmarket nowadaysin the music industry. Any school providesvery good tools to improve and learn from. However, staying insideof thispost-modernacademicsystemintheartsisnotrealistic.Irecommendthestudentstohavehalfoftheirbody inside of school and the other half inthe“realworld”.Therefore, theywillbeableto experience first hand what they reallyneedtohaveasuccessfulcareerinthemusicfield. Inaddition, havinga curious, creativeandopenmindisextremelyimportant.Ialsorecommend that in order to become a realmusician in this very demanding musicalsociety, wemust be eclectic, a hybrid artist.Learn and understandmany styles ofmusicand always be prepared for potential newthe opportunities. Being always preparedmakes a big difference to keep being asuccessfulmusician.

    12.DoyouhaveafavoriterecordingormemorableconcertyouhaveattendedotherthanthePortoSymphonyOrchestra?

Fortunately, I have many memorablemoments inmycareer. It’sdifficult tochooseonlyoneof them,as theyhavebeen inmanydifferentmusicalsituations! One of these moments was listening andwatching violin start Aline Ibragimovaperforming Dimitri Shostakovich 's ViolinConcerto with the London SymphonyOrchestra. The audience at this end of thepiecestoodupsoquickly, clappingforherasif we were in a rock/pop concert. The vibeand the energy was simply unique, superb.Thosemoments are the ones youwon’t everforget.

    13. Youhavebeenalwaysactivelyinvolvedinsoloandchambermusicrecitals.Howdoyoufeelthatexperiencehelpsyoubecomeabetterorchestralplayer?

Having a rich and diversemusical lifewill make you a much better player. Yourmain goal is to pursuemusical excellence soyou immediately and unconsciouslyincorporate itwhenyouareperformingwithan orchestra. The brain keeps always fresh, motivated and with positive energy/atitude.Everyone around you will be affected in agoodway by your commitment. It’s good foreveryone.

    14. HowdoyoumanageyourjobasprincipaltubaofPortoSymphonywithabusyrecitalschedule?

    That’s agoodquestionas it’snoteasyassomepeoplemightthink!

It requires a lot of commitment, passion, andfocus. It’s likeworking24hoursper day. It’s very difficult and challenging tokeepagoodandhealthyphysicalandmentalcondition. However, I like demandingchallenges.Theymakemefeelveryhappyandalwayseagertokeeplearning.

    15. Asateacher,whatdoyouexpectmorefromyourstudents?

As teacher formore than 22 years, Ijust expect the students to grow, keepeducating themselves and become betterhumanbeings. If theybecomebetterhumanbeings, naturally they will automaticallybecomebettermusicians.

    16. AsprincipaltubawiththePortoSymphony,whatdoyouconsideryourmusicalroletobewithinthesectionandtheorchestra?whatdoyouexpectfromthetrombonesectionplayingclosetoyou?

Being one of the bass voices of thePortoSymphonyOrchestraCasadaMúsica,Itry to be as much solid and consistentpossible.

As a tuba player, throughmyway ofplayingIcanchangethesoundof theentireorchestra. I canprovide theorchestramanydifferent important things in terms ofdynamicspectrum, tone, colorandtexture.

My role in the trombone sectionrepresents just one side of the duties of anorchestral tuba player. From my point ofview and experience, the tuba is awildcardin the orchestra. It can help and change thesound and precision of the double bass andcellosection;itcanhelpthebassoonsectiontobemuchmoreclearandbalancedandalsoithasanimportantroleasthelowestvoiceofthe horn and trombone sections. It has alsoitsownuniqueandspecialvoice.

Thereare somecomposerswhohavereallyunderstoodtheinstrumentanduseditinawaytheytrulyexplorethosecapacities.Icould highlight composers as RichardWagner, Jean Sibelius, Silvestre Revueltas,Anton Bruckner, Sergei Prokofiev, DimitriShostakovich, Igor Stravinsky, GeorgeGershwin,BelaBartok!

    17.YoucreatedyearsagoyourownSeminarcalled“Gravissimo!”inAlcobaça,Portugal,duringsummertime.Couldyoutellusmoreaboutit?

This is an international low brassacademy and festival held inmy home town— Alcobaça. This year we will celebrate the10th anniversary edition, which it’ssomething very special that we couldn’timagine that it would ever happen, even inourbestdreams.

It’s a very special eventwhich has itsown philosophy and concept. All the invitedartistshavebeenchosenbecauseof their lifephilosophyandartisticapproach.

We are very proud and happy there. Many world class artists have alreadyperformedandtaughtat the festival. Iwouldlike to mention artists as David Bruchez,György Gyivicsán, Christian Jones, DavidTaylor,MarshallGilkes,RobinEubanks,EijiroNakagawa, Jacques Mauger, Ricardo Molla,Bob Stewart, Oren Marshall, Gene Pokorny,Floyd Cooley, Anne Jelle Visser, RicardoCarvalhoso, Jose Martinez-Antón, PetriKeskitalo, François Thuillier, DanielPerantoni, Mike Forbes, Shimpei Tsugita,Anthony Caillet, Demondrae, Thomas Rüedi.JukkaMyllys,FernandoDeddos, LukaEinfalt,ShoichiroHokazono,MatthewMurchison, andmanygreatnationalartists.

Since five years ago, the event havestarted having different composers inresidencefrommanynationalities.Composersas Anne Victorino D’Almeida, DanielBernardes, Luís Cardoso, Telmo Marques,André M. Santos (Portugal); AndrewBatterham (Australia); Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen (Norway); Eijiro Nakagawa (Japan);Elizabeth Raum (Canada); Daniel Schvetz(Argentina/ Portugal); Ivan Moody(Inglaterra),amongothers.

It’sverydemandingtobethe“face”ofthe festival as artist in residence, but it alsogives a lot of pleasure and personalsatisfaction when the festival ends andeverythinggoesverywell. It’sveryenriching!

    18.Which tuba andmouthpiece branddoyouuse?

I play with a Yamaha YCB826S“Yamayork” contrabass CC tuba; a YamahaYFB821S bass piston f tuba; a YamahaYFB822S piston f tuba; a Walter Nirschl 5rotary raw brass F bass tuba; a Kalison 5piston F cimbasso; a Conn 20k super actionBBbsousaphone;myonedesigntubawhichocallit “Lusophone",buildwithparts fromoldconn and king recording bell tubas— it’s acontrabass CC tuba with 5 pistons, and itlookslikeagiantbaritonesaxophone!

I also play with my own designed

    mouthpieces totally handmade by JapanesemasterHirotakaNakaifromAtelierBrassLabMoMo,Osaka.

    19. Do you have any hobby that helpsyouloosenupfromyourschedule?

Well, I try todomeditationa little biteveryday and reading. Love to watch goodmovies, fish crabs and octopus, spend timewith good friends and walk with my lovelybassethoundSparky

    20. Do you have any advice for thebrass students currently enrolled atRooseveltUniversitywhoarepursuingamusicalcareer??

Keep the curiosity and an avid andopened mind. Don’t be afraid to discoveryourself. The students should discoverthemselves, find their own voice, their ownsong. Once they find that Song, they shouldsingthatsongwherevertheyperform.

Be an eclectic and hybrid musician, learning and understanding as many musicstyles as possible. This is my definition of apost-modernartist,anoff-roadmusician.
