The number-one thing that impacts people is the skill of influence. If you are going to be a leader in your family, your community, your workplace, or even in yourself, you must master this skill. This month, we have one such individual, by the name of Rashed AlNuaimi, who has managed to positively influence people all around him. AlNuaimi has a promising career ahead of him as a talented singer and aspiring filmmaker, and has a strong fan base on his Instagram and YouTube pages. In this issue, you can find out about his life, plans and, of course, his passion for music and filmmaking.

one8one is also proud to bring forth its new travel section, for which we encourage all of you to send in your writing on the

new and cool places that you have been to recently. This month, we have Soumya, who writes to us about her adventures in Bali, which she says were more exciting than watching Julia Roberts in the popular movie, Eat Pray Love.

On a different note, we are constantly looking for writers and photographers to cover events for one8one. So if you think you’ve got it, show us what you can do! To have your work published in one8one, please fill out the form on our website or email it to [email protected].

We look forward to receiving your articles, reviews, poems, short stories and photos.

Lack of Student Accommodation soon to be a thing of the past for Dubai’s University studentsFinding suitable accommodation as a student in Dubai is a problem that many face. Our recent conversations with Universities and Students reveals that many students struggle to find affordable, high quality accommodation that is easily accessible to their University.

It seems there is a ‘no-win’ scenario occurring in which finding quality accommodation near to campus means paying very high prices – as much as AED 8,000 per month! For most this is not affordable and many students have to settle for sharing a single room with up to 3 other people to keep costs down. This is not an appropriate living arrangement to meet the needs of a successful student. If students wish to find quality accommodation that they can afford alone or with a friend, they are often compromising on areas far from the city, with long periods of travel to University each day. That’s valuable time in which students are not doing the things that they would like to be doing; such as studying, socialising and playing sports.

Dubai’s student population is growing much faster than the global average, which is credit to the immense development of the education sector over the past few years. This rate of growth is predicted to continue for many years to come. There is an increasing choice of universities, subjects and activities for students in Dubai and many international students are now choosing Dubai over the more traditional destinations such as the UK and USA. However, despite the increase in the number of programmes on offer, there has been very little development in the student accommodation provision in the Emirate. Even for Universities who have built or acquired their own student accommodation, the problem is not solved:

“We built accommodation for our students a few years ago, but the number of students now attending the University is far exceeding the accommodation space we have available. We still need to find more suitable accommodation for our student body.” Student Accommodation Officer

It is clear to us that many members of Dubai’s vibrant student body are suffering due to the lack of appropriate student accommodation. There’s no quick solution, building accommodation takes a while and it will probably be many years until there’s enough accommodation for all the students that need it. However, the good news is that Uninest Student Residences are now in Dubai, bringing over 20 years experience in developing homes especially for students globally. Their first student residences will open in Dubailand in September 2015.

Uninest Dubailand will offer a purpose-built accommodation solution for students studying at any university. The rent is inclusive of all bills and transport and there are no hidden extra costs. There are fantastic facilities for students to use including a café, study spaces, gym, swimming pool, roof terrace and common area. Students are able to choose from a Twin en-suite, Single en-suite or Studio room to suit their needs and budget. All rooms are fully furnished, full of natural light and are specifically designed to support a student lifestyle. There are also additional student support services offered, such as revision skills, CV writing and Interview technique workshops.

If you would like to learn more about how you can secure your room at Uninest in Dubailand from next September then Uninest Student Residences.

Houzz(iOS, Android)This is one of the best home improvement inspiration apps on the go, as it provides you with all the tools and information you need to complete your home projects. The app itself is neat, logically laid out, smart and pretty in all the right places, making it the perfect distraction as you recline on your comfortable arm chair contemplating your next decorating project.

One Shot (Android, iOS) Have you ever come across a passage or quote and thought that every single person you know needs to read it? OneShot is the perfect companion for the life coach in all of us. Whether it’s a passage from Mother Teresa or the transliteration of a Young Thug bar, a lot is possible for phone users. With this app, you can screenshot a passage and edit it, removing unnecessary fuzz like your battery life or cellular signal status.

Briefme (iOS) If you feel a little lost about what is happening around the world, then it would be best for you to download BriefMe. It digs up the 10 most popular stories from the day, gathering data on what gets shared and talked about, and presents the headlines to you. If you want to read more about the particular topic, you can easily click on the links to read more about the issues. This is the best way to keep yourself updated on what is happening around you.

SoundCloud (iOS, Android) SoundCloud is great because it's not just the same old music rehashed in a new, futile, money-making shell. It does hold a lot of full-length commercial tracks, but it's the unique user-generated music that makes it special — DJ mixes, remixes, cover versions, live recordings and recital snippets, sounds and spoken word contributions. If you want to listen beyond the sphere of Spotify, it is worth a listen.

Cast: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Julia Ormond

The technical dazzle of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a truly astonishing thing to behold. This story of a man who ages backwards requires Brad Pitt to begin life as a tiny, elderly man, then blossom into middle age, and finally, wisely, become young. How director David Fincher — with makeup artists, special-effects wizards, and body doubles — achieves this is one of the main sources of fascination in the early reels of the movie.

Cast: James D'Arcy, Jake Johnson, Rob Riggle, Damon Jr. Wayans

Let's Be Cops is the ultimate buddy cop movie, except for one thing: the main characters are not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighbourhood sensations, and decide to roll with it. But when these newly minted "heroes" get tangled in a real-life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges, and their lives, on the line, resulting in hilarious, albeit a little silly, situations.

Cast: Denzel Washington, Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz

McCall (Denzel Washington) has put his mysterious past behind him and is dedicated to living a new, quiet life. But when he meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalise the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened.

Aubrey Graham, better known as Drizzy Drake, released his fourth project on the dawn of his widely anticipated show in Dubai last month. Perhaps taking inspiration from Beyonce’s low-key release plot for her self-titled album, the Toronto native’s fourth project, If You're Reading This It’s Too Late, was inconspicuously left on iTunes. Drake has been steadily producing guest verses on some of the hottest tracks of the past year, including Migos’s Versace and iLoveMakonnen’s Tuesday. The question Drake’s fans had was would Drake release a solo-project of the same caliber that boosted him to stardom? The first word that comes to mind while listening to IYRTITL is versatility. His release is a fusion, a uniquely melodic make-up supported by the lyrical prowess his fans crave. Songs are laden with tales of luxurious adventures through the ‘Six’, a nickname for his stomping ground. The sound summarises a young man who is reaching the summit of his craft, closing in on being an icon, and seemingly looking for companionship in all the wrong places. Drake channels the Big Bad Wolf on the album, and serenades the audiences on Madonna and the last track, Jungle. Either through wooing or huffing and puffing, Drake finds a way to appeal to his audience.

Iceland's finest export, and one of the few musicians with an umlaut in her name (save Motörhead), is back and beaming with at atmospheric release, Vulnicura. Tracks like Lionsong sound dualistic. As is the 10-minute track, Black Lake, which starts off fuzzy, peaks with a flurry of drums and deep dub loops, and ends in an innocent violin solo from a middle-school recital. And on top of the instrumental excellence is Björk's siren voice, a Scandanavian mermaid lullaby to the ears. The truth about Björk’s Vulnicura is that it's not mainstream-friendly. Although she’s been a veteran in her worn genre of abstract sounds, listening to her makes you feel like an outsider looking in at such a unique and explorative soundscape. Though it contains sounds we imagine as dark and unfriendly, Vulnicura is also livid and bright — especially on the ending track, Quicksand. Although we may never hear much of this sort of style on Virgin Radio, the album does pop in its own beautiful manner.

CinderellaCinderella is the same old story in a gorgeous new live-action setting. True to the tale, Cinderella is rescued by her Fairy Godmother, as played by Helena Bonham Cater, who appears first as a kind, elderly witch, but soon transforms into a stunning, white fairy full of magic and just a little humour. The Fairy Godmother’s magic comes to life with amazing special effects as she transforms the pumpkin into a coach, the mice into horses, and lizards into footman, and Cinderella leaves for the ball.

The ball scene is breathtakingly beautiful with sumptuous scenery, costumes and well-choreographed dancing. The film is visually stunning with sweeping shots of the beautiful countryside and castle, and the acting is strong throughout. The message the film gives, to be courageous and kind, is repeated often and is somewhat disappointing for a movie-goer looking for a strong female role-model. If you liked Ever After (1998), starring Drew Barrymore in the Cinderella role, then this film isn’t for you. But if you want a fairy tale and stunning visuals, give it a go.

Focus A movie muddled with a series of twists and turns, Focus is a new title starring Will Smith, who doesn't seem to age, and the beautiful Margot Robbie. Nicky (Will Smith) is a veteran con artist, and the plot follows him taking on a novice named Jess (Margot Robbie). While Nicky teaches Jess the tricks of the trade, the couple seem to became romantically involved, though Nicky finds the closeness highly uncomfortable and thus breaks all connections with her. Three years later, Jess returns into his life while he works on an extremely important and dangerous project. With Jess coming back and bringing chaos into his life, Nicky soon starts to realise that he cannot be off his game and needs to stay focused.

A movie about con artists always has its twists and turns, and is bound to fool you a little, but fortunately this movie hasn’t been riddled with clichés. The duo are very appealing to watch as they have amazing chemistry on screen and are great at creating humorous scenes and keeping the audience enthralled. Focus blends a various number of movie genres into one film, making it a great movie to watch.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M (Nintendo 3DS) Code Name: STEAM is a truly bizarre game, based on Abraham Lincoln, who fakes his own death so that he can build a power-packed army of famous literary characters such John Henry, Tom Sawyer, Tiger Lily and so many more, to battle an alien invasion. The story is as weird as it sounds, and the gameplay is actually quite difficult, with intentionally annoying battles.

When Code Name: STEAM isn't boring, it is often just annoying, with nearly impossible-to-kill flying enemies that can destroy you from halfway across the map. You can easily get shot even if you make the slightest move. And when you are fighting back, it is usually guesswork and the firing isn’t instantaneous. Even though the idea and thought behind the game is quite interesting, we hope that the developers will return to the idea and spend more time improving it.

Cities: Skylines (PC)The Cities: Skyline is quickly becoming this month's best-selling game, as the good folks crave a good city-building game. It has been an extremely long time since people have been excited to play a better version of SimCity. Unfortunately the latest SimCity is a little too fantasy-based and has size limitations wherin gamers are not able to establish proper zoning districts, which made a lot of us crazy. Whereas Cities: Skyline lets you play a virtual mayor who has to run the municipality. The game is filled with real-world experience, with proper zoning, room to grow, reviewal of policies and districts that are your responsibility to develop.

The game has no multiplayer option, which is a total bummer, but at least it is filled with frilly options like disasters and giant monster attacks, which make it interesting. Since you only have one city to deal with, along with a mostly invisible outside world that allows you to buy and sell goods on a common market, you are kind of limited. Nevertheless, City:Skylines is one of the best city-builder games on the market.

Amna Al Blooshi is a 28-year-old, self-taught graphic designer and artist, who has participated in many art exhibitions like the Art Bazaar, Dress the Mannequin Project, Art Dubai/Sikka Art Fair 2015 , Mattar Bin Lahej's latest Art Exhibition and the Middle East Film and Comic Con. She was also one of the winners of the Abu Dhabi Art Wings Project in 2014. This year, for the Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC), Al Blooshi was selected as a regional featured guest artist, and for this, she is working on a special project.

What is your art inspired by?My art has a unique look and feel and is frequently inspired by the Gothic art style. It has a twist of modern pop, contemporary and Japanese art style as well.

What do you do right now?I work as a full-time graphic designer and do my individual art projects on a side. My main field of interest is digital art, but I have also done art installations and traditional paintings throughout the years.

How does it feel to be a part of MEFCC?It is my third year as an exhibitor at MEFCC and it feels great — especially this year since I was chosen as one of the regional guest artists. Being in MEFCC brings out childhood memories and makes me feel that I’m in a magical parallel universe filled with great people and artists. It is the experience that you get and the rush that you feel by being in such an event that creates something unforgettable. Meeting great artists, fans and seeing their individual reactions and responses on their faces when they see your art is priceless.

What can one expect to see when they come to see you at MEFCC?Each year I come up with a totally original collection of merchandise that has an artistic touch for the visitors of MEFCC. I believe in using everyday objects within my art so as to inspire or draw a smile on someone’s face whenever they see it. This year I have a new exclusive collection that contains sketch/notebooks, mugs, and prints that have characters from my favourite comics and anime with my own special original artistic twist.

Can you give us the inside scoop about the project you are working that is inspired by DC and Nintendo? This is a fan-based art collection that is inspired by DC and Nintendo. The collection has eight art pieces with unique combinations of both Gotham and Pokémon characters with a freaky circus theme.

FUJIFILM X30The Fujifilm X30 is the follow-up to the well-known Fujifilm X20, and it has maintained its retro style, but come with a few upgrades to enhance handling and adds more techie improvements.

The X30 retains the 28-122mm f/2.0-2.8 manual zoom lens, 12MP X-trans sensor, and EXR II image processor from the X20. It is comfortable to hold and is powered up by twisting the zoom ring from its retracted position. Lens rings are a useful addition and can be customised to control certain functions like ISO, film simulation mode, and aperture.

The camera comes with three-inch 921k dot tilting screen, providing high resolution, though it isn’t touch-sensitive. The most significant change is that the optical viewfinder has been replaced by and electronic viewfinder (EVF). The X30 is particularly impressive as it has managed to fit in the EVF and still provided a built-in flash and hot shoe. Buttons around the camera can be customised and the Q button shows 15 functions for quick access. It also impresses by automatically raising the shutter and speeding the ISO to avoid motion blur when detecting a moving object.

The X30 comes with built-in Wi-Fi, making it possible to be controlled remotely with a smartphone or tablet. It’s also equipped with a bigger battery, which is supposed to give you a minimum of 470 shots per charge.

The size and bulk might be an issue for some but with its beautiful retro design and high-quality EVF function, the X30 doesn’t disappoint.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is a very large phone, with a six-inch display offering Full HD 1080p resolution. It’s a good-looking device with a mostly aluminium frame, and being slim and light, it feels great in the hand. The phone offers accurate colours and high contrast, which provides a great experience for watching videos, playing games or just even browsing sites.

HardwareThe Mate 7 is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 925 processor running at 1.8 Ghz, and 2GB of RAM. The CPU is perfectly quick and never lets down in performance. The device packs a huge 4,100 mAh battery, which provides an exceptional running life. At the back, a fingerprint scanner is included, and it is reliable every time as it reads the finger at any angle and brings the phone to life instantly.

Software The Mate 7 runs on Android 4.4.2, which is a bit of disappointment as we were expecting the latest version for a premium phone. However it is overlaid with Huawei's Emotion 3.0 interface, which changes the Android look significantly. As usual, there is no app drawer, which means each app installed has to appear on the home screen itself.

Camera The camera on the Mate 7 is a standard 13 MP unit with LED flash. The camera offers good shots and also provides a large range of functions and effects. The front-facing camera is 5 MP, also offers pretty decent selfie shots.

VerdictThe Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is an attractive device with solid build quality, and it is one of the best premium Huawei devices to date. The older software disappoints but that doesn’t make this device a bad performer. It tops the chart if you demand a bigger phone with a high-end gaming and video viewing experience.

22Art Dubai 2015 Art

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, opened Art Dubai’s preview last month. The fair is the world’s largest annual showcase of artists from the Arab world, and was held at a beautiful and artistic Madinat Jumeriah.

The ninth edition of the fair was the biggest to date, with 92 galleries from 40 countries. Visitors had the opportunity to enjoy the fair’s diverse programmes, including commissioned site-specific works for Art Dubai Projects; an exhibition from the winners of The Abraaj Group Art Prize; the Sheikha Manal Little Artists Program for children and teenagers; plus an engaging schedule of performances, curator-led tours, book launches, talks and collateral events.

This year’s edition of Art Dubai saw increased focus on performance art across many areas of the fair. Art Dubai Projects artists Jumana Emil Abboud and Rheim Alkadhi created ongoing performance and durational work that interacted with the environment and happened intermittently throughout the day.

Commissioned collective Umashankar & The Earchaeologists showcased their performance piece by showing visitors how sound can influence our understanding of ancient — and contemporary — sites. Their project attempted to provide an archaeology of listening that challenged the visually dominant reading of history.

Guests also enjoyed a live musical performance by commissioned sound artists Fari Bradley and Chris Weaver. Colombian performance artist María José Arjona’s long durational performance work showed in the Contemporary halls as part of Art Dubai’s Marker programme, which focused on Latin America this year. Overall it was a spectacular and mesmerising event for art lovers based in the UAE.

Key Pieces Every

Woman Needs by Laila Sarhan

Every woman needs a great pair of jeans, regardless of her body type. Although they can’t be worn during formal events, they can basically be worn anywhere else. They are also versatile and will most probably match just about any top, blouse, jacket or coat in your wardrobe.

Shirts. Dresses. Blouses. Skirts. Trousers. There are many opinions regarding what a woman should have in her wardrobe. But there are usually a few key pieces that most agree on. These “key pieces” don’t need to be basic — each one should suit your personal style. They are the foundation to your wardrobe and you should love them just as much as you’d love any gown you own.

Style tip: If you’re feeling lost or bored of your wardrobe, always try to pair different pieces together. Rosie Huntington- Whiteley and Miranda Kerr are great examples of what you can do with basic items in your wardrobe.

Jeans

These come in all shapes and styles. Whether they’re tailored, loose or oversized, they make a great addition to your wardrobe. This is one of the most versatile pieces any woman can own. An oversized one can be thrown over a bikini on the pool, and a fitted one can be paired with a pair of trousers and heels and be worn to a formal occasion. They are also fantastic for job interviews.

Collared Button Down

Fashion

Page 29: Break Free Issue

A well-cut blazer can be used as a great layering piece and adds a sense of class to any outfit. Blazers come in all types of styles — plain, embellished, shrunken or oversized. They are great in the day paired with jeans and a t-shirt, at night paired with a dress, or with an office look paired with a button down and a pencil skirt.

Blazer

As the saying goes, “Good shoes take you good places.” And we couldn’t agree more. Black heels may be just what you need to spice up a boring outfit or to compliment your fabulous sparkly dress. But there's a vital thing to remember when choosing your heels: Always get the height that’s comfortable to you — especially if you need to wear them on a daily basis, perhaps at the office.

Black Heels

Whether they are cotton, silk, jersey or chiffon, black and white tops are essential. They can be worn with anything — pencil skirts, jeans, cut-offs, skirts, or trousers. Although they are usually not very show-stopping, they can be worn to compliment the centrepiece of your whole outfit.

Black and White Tops

The LBD, as some may know, was invented by none other than the creator of style herself, Ms Coco Chanel. The great thing about LBDs is that you can find them anywhere in different forms and variations. Practically every designer has their own signature LBD. All you need to do is find one that fits you well. A-line, strapless, flowy, short, wrap are just a few styles you can find of this item. It can be worn with tights, a belt, or even layered over by a cardigan or a blazer. It can be worn with flats, stilettos, sandals, or platforms. LBDs are definitely a go-to fashion piece if you’re feeling lost for what to wear.

Denim is certainly the cornerstone of the wardrobes of many gents. Every modern man owns at least one pair of jeans, or maybe even a shirt and a jacket. According to the new book, Denim Dudes, which looks at the street style and global business of denim, around 50% of the world is wearing a pair of jeans at any one time, and almost 4 billion pairs are produced every year.

In all its various forms and colours, denim is really the material for all seasons and numerous arrays of styles. Typically seen as an informal wear, jeans and denim jackets can also be used alongside tailored garments to create smart-casual ensembles or as a part of a business casual look.

Fashion media described denim as “the fabric of the season” in SS 2013 and this title works equally well for all the following seasons. But in 2015 there's something new: high fashion has joined the rest of us this season — denim is now a catwalk trend for the first time in a decade. International fashion giants such as Christopher Kane, Moschino, J W Anderson and Burberry Prorsum joined the denim club, using the sturdy fabric as a base for their designs.

Take a look at the key pieces you should introduce to your wardrobe in 2015 while denim is having its major moment.

Festival fever is truly in the air as thousands of music lovers prepare to flock to locales across the world for weekend-long celebrations of outdoor fun. Whether you are heading to Coachella in California, Primavera Sound in sunny Spain or the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre, make sure not only to pack your tent and festival survival kit, but also be prepared when it comes to your festival wardrobe.

Rashed AlNuaimiEmirati Singer and Filmmaker

Page 35: Break Free Issue

Rashed AlNuaimi is an aspiring Emirati singer and filmmaker, who is pursuing his passion in the creative fields by creating high-quality musical films that are inspirational to people all around the world. His Instagram page is filled with a cappella-inspired music — AlNuaimi shows himself in several forms, which sing along with each other to create a beautiful and soothing end results. Even though most of his musical videos are funny, you can see how talented, dedicated and passionate he is about being in that moment and giving the viewers his all. Our team had the chance to chat with AlNuaimi for a while and here is what he had to say:

Tell us about yourself. My name is Rashed AlNuaimi, and I am a recent graduate from the American University of Sharjah. I studied Multimedia Design, and my passion in life is music and filmmaking. So what I try to do is combine both, so I don’t end up doing one and forgetting the other one.

Tell us more about your singing and filmmaking aspirations.I am on the road to creating a career out of singing but I also have a passion for filmmaking as well, so I try to incorporate projects that combine both. Within my Instagram account, which is becoming pretty popular, I do elements of both — music as well as creating high-quality video with animation and high-definition footage, which is not your typical iPhone-recorded type of content.

What artists inspire you?So many! My ultimate and most favourite, and the one that has inspired me, is the late Whitney Houston …(laughs)… you didn’t see that coming! Whitney Houston has been my childhood inspiration, and as I grew older I learnt to appreciate her music even more. Once I learnt more about music technicality, and the emotional aspect to it, I grew to appreciate her power in the music even more. The current living artist that I look up to is Adele, as she is currently my favourite living artist. Within the new and upcoming artists, I like Sam Smith.

Why do you sing in English and not Arabic?Since I am Emirati by birth, a lot of people critiqued me on why I don’t sing in Arabic, for which I have always mentioned two reasons: Number one would be that the style of singing from the West and the East is completely different, and in order to sing them both you have to be vocally able to. So number one is I am vocally not able to, as I grew up listening to American pop music, Western basically, and so my singing cords were used to that style of music. When people ask me why this is so, I just tell them that I was driven to that side more than the Eastern side. In order to try and sing in Arabic, I have to train myself very hard, and for a very long time, and even after that I still wouldn’t grasp the full potential of it because it’s something I am learning to do rather than having it be from within me.

"the style of singing from the West and the East is completely different."

Who produces your music videos? The videos on my Instagram account are all me; I handle all of the music, editing and the filming, and I usually get the instrumentals online. But in terms of YouTube, where I do the higher production type of stuff, I would need multiple cameras, multiple angles, multiple retakes, so I have my university friends help me. I am very thankful for my friends as they support and help me. One of the biggest supporters is Deena Stevens, who has been helping me a lot in my projects.

Where do you get inspirations for a video?A lot of them are sub-conscious, as in the past I did some videos and at the time I didnt realise that I was inspired by someone until somebody else pointed it out to me. For example, I did a Disney segment on Instagram where I was inspired by Jon Cozart. He is a YouTuber who makes great videos, and I took some of the elements, and made them my own. Other than that, it is basically my experiences throughout life, and depending on the situations, sometimes ideas just pop-up.

How do you edit your videos? What software do you use?It depends on the length and the quality of the video, so if it’s a short Instagram video, and depending on what I want to do with the video, like add animation or a green screen, I would go to Adobe After Effects. If it’s just a quick 15 seconds of attaching videos next to each other, I use iMovie. Whereas if it’s a long feature, short film or short music video, I would go for Final Cut Pro X. Depending on my needs I just choose whatever software would work best.

What types of film do you make?Since my two passions are music and film, I tend to make musical films. So in my fourth year at university, which was around a couple of months ago, I directed a short musical film. It was, I think, eight minutes long, and it had original music with lyrics and everything. It was basically, I think, the first Emirati short musical, and of course I worked with my friends from university, who were part of the cast and crew. Other than that I just try to do heartwarming comedic relief videos rather than the serious drama type.

What is your favourite genre to make?I would have to say light-hearted comedy.

What is your favourite genre to watch? My favourite movies are Titanic, and White Chicks. There is a big difference between Titanic and White Chicks, so I go for either the hardcore, sobbing-your-eyes drama, or a silly comedy movie like White Chicks.

Can you tell us more about the 48-Hour Film Project? The 48-Hour Film Project is such an intense project, where you basically come up with a story and make a film in two days. I think it’s going to become sort of a tradition for my friends and I, because we did it when we were, I think, in the second year of university. Basically what we do is we gather up and we just prepare ourselves mentally for the most hectic time period that’s going to come to us. We gather our Red Bulls, books, wear our thinking caps, and prepare ourselves positively by not allowing people to either nag or complain, or do any sort of negative thing that would bring down the energy of the group. These are the rules that you have to follow before you enter the group, and, of course, there is no sleeping for two days. Even though it’s the most hectic time, it is also the most fun as well. We get so much out of the experience even if we don’t win, such as the memories and the things we get to learn.

Do you have any advice for the youth of the UAE?Yes, I have so much to share, but I’ll take the Disney route and say be true to yourself, because honestly that is one of the most important things, even though it sounds cliché. This is a thought that has been repeated over time because it is an important lesson that continuously needs to be taught because some people tend to divert from who they actually are just to reach a certain goal. From experience, I think that even after a person reaches that goal, they tend to not be fully satisfied because it’s not what was really wanted from within. So I would recommend that you be yourself to be yourself, improve upon things that you know you should change and just be a positive person.

36World Scholars Cup 2015

by Naqiyah Mustafa

News

"Pwaa!" A group of 500 students sang out loud in the massive auditorium at Wellington International School Dubai. What is Pwaa, you may ask? Well, it is simply the sound a happy alpaca makes. And why do I know what sounds a happy alpaca makes? Because alpacas are the very adorable mascots of the World Scholars Cup.

The World Scholar’s Cup is a global event that brings students from all nationalities and countries together with one aim in mind, to learn. The point of the event is not only to learn but to motivate students of all backgrounds to discover new strengths and practice new skills. The main aim is to inspire a global community of future scholars and leaders.

The World Scholars Cup can be described in seven simple words; inclusive, encouraging, interdisciplinary, discussion-based, forward-looking, team-oriented, and whimsical.

The idea behind the World Scholar’s Cup was to create something different from traditional academic competitions and conferences — a celebration of the joy of learning, a tournament as rewarding for the team that comes in last as the for the team that comes in first, an enrichment opportunity

that motivates students not just to demonstrate their existing strengths but to discover new ones.

It was not just an event that gave us a great learning experience but it also helped us to understand so many new things. The World Scholars Cup takes place every year and there are an endless number of rounds that are held in Dubai due to its popularity. Anyone and everyone can take part; there are absolutely no restrictions.

So if you want to experience learning in the wackiest and most sublime manner then check out www.scholarscup.org and you can get all the information you need.

The next round is coming up soon in May 2015, so don’t miss out on your chance to participate.

The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is an annual festival at the InterContinental Hotel, which is located in the heart of Festival City. The event takes place in March and has been taking place for the last seven years. People go to this festival because they want to see best-selling authors and get books signed by them. What we loved most about the festival was the way it brought together people who love reading and people who love writing. It was a great way to learn more about how authors get inspiration for their work and the process they go through to write.

Here are some of the authors we had a chance to meet:

The Book Thief, which was published in 2005, was inspired by Zusak's parents, who had told him stories about what it was like growing up in Germany and Austria during World War Two. Zusak told the audience how he enjoyed hearing people's stories and thought, “Humans are made up of words.” Without words, humans would not have any stories to tell.

When we asked him what advice he would give to young writers, he told us, “Never be afraid to fail. Writers learn from their mistakes.”

Oliver started to write short stories that were sequels to her favorite books because her reading habits were broad. Her love of writing grew out of her love of reading and experimenting with inspiration and that's how her ideas grew. Her advice for young writers is to “write everyday”, and to “learn when to accept criticism for your writing". Oliver has been writing every day since she was a nine-year-old, and writing has become a habit for her.

This session had two people telling us about their work. The first was Jenny, the director of a company of about 20 people. The props used within her play are puppets that are made and carved out of cane, plywood and other wood. Craig was asked to assist with the puppeteer training and he was the first person to ride on the horse puppets. The horse puppets are easier to control than real horses and the puppeteers had to learn the horse language during training. The puppets were used in The War Horse play.

Sharjah Biennial 12: The Past, the Present, the Possible (SB12) opened on Thursday, 5 March, 2015, in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and H.E. Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation. Curated by Eungie Joo, with associate curator Ryan Inouye, SB12 includes works by more than 50 artists and cultural practitioners from 25 countries, with over two thirds of the participants presenting new work and commissions.

SB12 takes place in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, crossing the emirate to sites in and around the city, as well as in the city of Kalba on the Gulf of Oman, and will be on view through 5 June, 2015. Rather than conforming to proscribed themes, works in SB12 are presented in conversation with each other. Challenging modes of participation and engagement, The Past, the Present, the Possible invites participants and the public to reflect upon the possibilities and ambitions of Sharjah, a city and emirate still in the process of imagining itself through education, culture, religion, heritage and science.

SB12 acknowledges the centrality of the present — respecting the past, but rejecting nostalgia and the burden of history in favour of productive imaginings of the possible. These perspectives resonate with the ideas of philosopher Henri Lefebvre in his essay, The Right to the City (1967), which inspired the exhibition’s title.

SB12 spreads further into the city than previous editions of the Biennial, with Michael Joo’s new commission featured across Sharjah Creek in a warehouse at Port Khalid, and Hassan Khan’s intervention at The Flying Saucer, an iconic building built in the 1970s. Installations by Mohammed Kazem and mix rice are found

within Souq Al Shanasiyah, and Abraham Cruzvillegas’ site-specific sculptures can be seen at the Bird and Animal Market.

In Kalba, Adrián Villar Rojas’ massive intervention covers the entire site of the city’s old ice factory. The extensive SAF Art Spaces includes new commissions by Abdullah Al Saadi, Iman Issa, Cinthia Marcelle, Taro Shinoda, Rayyane Tabet, Haegue Yang and other new commissions and works.

Gary Simmons’ Across the Chalkline takes the form of a cricket field for children, while Rirkrit Tiravanija’s untitled 2015 (Eau de Rose of Damascus) transforms Calligraphers’ Studios into a rose garden, rosewater distillery, kitchen and lounge.

At Sharjah Art Museum, works by Hassan Sharif include those created in 1985 at Sharjah’s Al Mareija Art Atelier founded in the 1980s in Al Mureijah, the area where SAF Art spaces now stand, and Byron Kim’s newly commissioned ااا ااااااا (City Night). Across the various exhibition spaces are major presentations of historic works by senior artists including Etel Adnan, Chung Chang-Sup, Saloua Raouda Choucair, Abdul Hay Mosallam Zarara and Fahrelnissa Zeid.

Take the reins of life into your own hands and steer it in the direction you want to go and choose some of the options that appeal to you:

Face the factsStop whining when life doesn't go the way you expect it to. It is full of twists and turns, so learn to enjoy the rollercoaster of life.

Change Your Focus You could choose to be upset about a lot of things, because not only is it easier to find the negative but because there is so much wrong with the world. Remember, though, there is a lot right with the world, too.

Laugh it OffThere are a lot of rude people in the world that may say mean things that may hurt you but choose to take it lightly and try to laugh it off.

Be Disciplined Focus on your goals and try to achieve them by being disciplined. Whatever the goal you set for yourself, make sure to change your 'should' into a 'must' by making it a priority.

Love YourselfYou can not love others when you don't really love yourself. So learn to be compassionate towards yourself and get to know yourself, because at the end of the day the one person you should be able to count on is yourself.

Follow Your Heart Do things you genuinely want to do and feel like doing. If you do things only because they are expected or desired by others, you will never be happy and may become resentful or bitter and have no one to blame but yourself.

Don’t Expect From OthersDo something nice for someone out of love but don’t expect to receive anything in return as expectations can be frustrating when they are not being met.

Pete Cromer

Artist

"I love to work with shapes, colour and create happy, warm-feeling images."

Page 47: Break Free Issue

Pete Cromer is an Australian artist, designer and illustrator, who creates happy, innocent, child-like art. His paintings are usually made out of simple shapes that create detailed paintings that definitely stand out. Cromer also paints faces on rocks, which he calls druids. These rocks are cute little figures that smile at a person and genuinely make them happy. Our team was able to contact him and get an exclusive interview and here is what he had to say:

Tell us a little about yourself and how would you describe your art? I’m Pete Cromer. I live down on the Surf coast of Victoria, Australia, on a hobby farm with my partner and a marvellous family of six. I love to work with shapes and colour and create happy, warm-feeling images from that. A random fact about me is that I have twin.

Do you have a professional background? I sure do. I have a bachelor’s degree in visual communication (graphic design) and have been the creative manager and run creative studios at Hallmark Cards Australia and other kids-based companies. I’ve been around for a while now and have recently gone solo since early 2014.

Describe a real-life situation that has inspired you? I get inspired a lot when I am doing simple things like driving, and I think that happens because the mind goes into a relaxed state of being, kind of like an auto-pilot mode. So, for example, when I am driving, I notice the deep dark grey of a stormy sky against the bright green leaves and grass with a few hints of purples and blues. That is when I think to myself, “I must bank that colour palette."

How do you feel when people interpret your artwork differently?I’m glad people do. It’s interesting hearing people speak of my work, because they see things that I don’t, which I find fascinating.

Which of your artwork pieces is your favourite and why? Kindly describe it?At the moment Princess Veronica is dear to my heart. I don’t know why, I am just really drawn to her. Maybe it’s the crazy colour.

Was being an artist originally what you wanted to do in life? If not, what was it that you wanted to pursue? I always intended to live a creative life, regardless of the title, I suppose. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I used to work at a fish shop years ago, filleting fish and delivering it to local restaurants. I really enjoyed it even though I stank!

Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed?Neither, as long as it makes me feel something. Whether it’s a feeling of happiness, sadness or even silliness, the feeling is important to me and my work. I experiment a lot, so my execution is always made up then and there.

Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic, expressive technique? I’m all about the energy or frequency when creating. What happens in the time of creating an artwork is a part of the artwork. I can’t necessarily control how I’m feeling on any given day, and that just makes life more exciting I think.

Engine TechnicalitiesF1 uses 1.6-litre four-stroke turbocharged 90° V6 reciprocating engines, which produce 15,000 RPM.

KERSKinetic Energy Recovery System was introduced in 2009 to use the heat energy produced by the internal combustion engine itself to convert it to electrical energy, which provides an additional 160 bhp in order for the engines to be as significant as the previous 2.4-litre V8s.

AerodynamicsAerodynamics is a key factor in allowing the car to move at faster speeds without being disrupted by wind. It serves to create downforce, which allows the car tires to be pushed onto the track to enhance cornering as well as minimise air resistance, also known as drag.

In light of the 2015 Formula 1 season, here are some interesting facts about the sport and its cars.

The entire car is made up of averagely 80,000 components. If the car is built at 99.9% accuracy, there are 80 components that are wrongly placed.

During the race, the average temperature in the cockpit will reach 50 °C.

F1 cars are built again in between the races. They are taken apart and engineers do about 200 different types of measurements and checks to ensure the safety and speed of the car.

by Miral Bushanq

Mechanical Strategy of F1Cars

Page 49: Break Free Issue

Braking SystemThe brakes of an F1 car are made of carbon-fibre composite brake discs, which weigh around 1.5 kg and withstand temperatures up to 750°C. Only one brake system is allowed on the car, which consists of two hydraulic circuits that are operated through one pedal. 'Left-foot Braking' — introduced in the 1990s — allowed for the use of two pedals (one leg on the throttle and one on the brake) in order for the driver to keep his two hands on the steering wheel.

DRSDrag Reduction System is an overtaking method that is allowed only in designated areas for a certain period of time. The rear wing flap moves horizontally to alter wind flow and reduce drag, as the racer is one second of a distance behind his rival. The driver then moves out of the slipstream of his opponent and aims to overtake.

TransmissionF1 cars use semi-automatic seamless shift gearboxes, which have eight forward gears as well as reverse. Two shift barrels are used within the transmission, allowing for a seamless shift to occur, leading to the driver not losing his drive.

TyresThe Pirelli tyres used in F1 consist of soft, natural and synthetic rubber compounds that allow for maximum grip but are worn out fast — in every race they have a lifespan of 60 to 120 km. Due to friction and rubber wear, a tyre loses 0.5 kg of weight per usage.

DiffuserThe diffuser located on the bottom rear section of the car is designed with high accuracy and detail due to its sensitive air control. The faster the air exits, the less air pressure under the car, and the better the downforce.

The tyres are filled with nitrogen due to its consistent pressure. Temperature plays a big role in determining the pressure within a tyre, therefore the use of nitrogen along with the heat generated from driving maintain consistency in performance.

The Dubai Lynx International Festival of Creativity is the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s annual must-attend event for the advertising and communications industry to learn, be inspired, network and celebrate. On the last day of the festival, the jury gives out awards to the region's finest agencies, based on creativity and innovativeness.

This year, the Dubai Lynx received closed to 2,500 entries, which is a lot more than the 2,279 that were received last year. Just as the entries grew this year, the global jury increased to 43 members this year. The festival even had over 68 speakers, from all over the world, to share their perspectives and wisdom in Arabic as well as English. The festival gave opportunities to young students and others to hear from the world’s leading agencies and brands, as well as several off-the-wall creative thinkers and doers, who shared their knowledge about the current and future trends of the industry,

This year's festival introduced the new Arabic stage, which had sessions conducted in Arabic, which was quite interesting. Our

favourites were New Perspective On Arabic Creativity by Fadi Elchamaa, who is the chief creative officer of TripleTwo, and, of course, Abla Fahita, who is an online Egyptian Star.

Another amazing thing Dubai Lynx introduced was the Tech Talks, which offered knowledge and news on the latest ground-breaking trends to enter the market. There were several seminars on how to understand digital advertising by integrating double click options, Google Analytics, impressions, codes, and HTML5 mailers to acquire more compelling data that can create engagements on social media platforms.

After soaking up all the knowledge and information, delegates had the opportunity to attend networking events to catch up with speakers and make contacts from the region.

“Don’t let the shopkeepers know that it’s your first time in Bali,” Brenda offered some friendly advice. “Here, everyone helps everyone, so if one of them finds out he’ll put your things in a white shopping bag, and that works as a signal for the others and you’ll get cheated.”

I believed her story. It was Brenda’s twelfth visit to Bali and she was on a first name-basis with most of them.

We met at the beachside warung (small eatery). While my husband and I were wondering what to order, Brenda, seated at the next table, suggested we try the fruit salad. Exotic fruits, such as the rambutan, durian, strawberry, jackfruit, papaya, sweet mangoes, watermelon and pineapple, were added to crushed ice and topped off with evaporated milk. What a tall order that was — new sensations, tastes and texture in every mouthful.

Brenda works as a hair and makeup artist in Australia’s highly competitive fashion industry and Bali is her go-to detox destination. When booked in advance, flights between Perth and Bali come for as low as $80, and that’s just one of the reasons why the Aussies love the island. Surf and shopping are some of the other reasons why it's so popular.

Do what you love to do, go where you love to goThe crazy party town of Kuta sleeps during the day. Shops open late in the morning, and even then, no-one is fully awake until well past 3pm. Groups of Australian tourists laze on the beach soaking the afternoon sun, while Balinese masseurs with magical hands tend to their party-abused bodies. A woman carrying a bag and box walks up to a group, and within minutes she has set up a mobile nail-art salon. Pedicure and manicure with nail paint costs about 80,000 rupiah, which is about $8, cheap by Australian standards. Chilled beverages and coconut water are readily available and nearby another woman prepares freshly barbequed corn. On these beaches, everyone with money to spend is made to feel like oriental royalty.

It is quieter in Ubud, and the sleeping habits of this town are in sharp contrast to those of Kuta. Shops start pulling down their shutters as early as 8.30pm. The few that are still open are playing the dubbed version of the Indian television soap, Mahabharata. By 10pm, the town is mostly deserted. The day usually starts early, and always starts with a prayer. Flowers, grass, sweets and incense sticks are placed in little baskets and left outside homes and shops. During their spare time, women take to basket weaving, nimble fingers fly swiftly. One of them wanted to show me her merchandise. “You India?” she asks and then continues in a sing-song tone, “Anjali…. buy one no… buy for Rahul.” The presence of India and Bollywood is everywhere. Another lady stops me to ask if I have taken a dip in the Ganges, she is happy when I say yes. “I will go too,” she states, and then adds as an afterthought, “one day.”

In most sports, once you have mastered the rules, you are in pretty good shape to be able to play. Golf, however, is unique in that proper etiquette is so important that it might as well be written into the rules. Even when you are young, you will never be taken seriously out on the golf course unless you learn and practice good golfing etiquette at all times. Here are a few of the basics that you will want to remember the next time you go to play 18 holes.

Safety FirstThe game of golf is played by swinging long, metal clubs as you hit a metal-coated ball at high speeds. Obviously, this combination makes injury a very real possibility. When you are on the course, therefore, it is essential that you make safety your number-one priority. Some safety precautions are common sense — don’t swing your club unless you know it is out of range of any of your fellows, for instance — but others can be hard to remember in the heat of the moment during a game. If you are focusing all your attention on where your ball is about to land, you may not realise it is headed right toward another player. Remember that other people are much more important than your game (and always yell “Fore!” if your ball is going anywhere near another group).

Watch Your PaceNothing is more frustrating than being behind a group of players who are going much more slowly than the course requires. You should make every effort to keep pace with the group in front of you so that no-one ends up having to wait. While actual tournaments require that the player who is “away” (furthest from the hole) hits first, during practice or friendly play, you can abandon this rule in favour of “ready play” (in which players hit in the order that is most convenient). Never spend more than a few minutes looking for a lost ball, and allow the group behind you to play through if you need to take a while to recover a ball that has landed out of bounds. Finally, remember to take a few different clubs with you when you leave the golf cart behind to search for your ball. You don’t want to change your mind once you’ve reached the ball and have to waste time walking back to your cart again. By keeping a good pace at all times, you can ensure that you don’t waste anyone’s time.

Learning Basic Golf Etiquette

Sports

Page 55: Break Free Issue

Be aware and conscientious of other players around you. Remember to stay quiet whenever someone else is preparing to take their shot, and always silence your cell phone when you arrive at the golf course so that its noise doesn’t disrupt someone else’s game. Once you have reached the putting green, never stand so that your cast shadow interferes with another player’s line of sight, and never walk across someone else’s putting line. Even the faintest footprints might alter another player’s putt. Another aspect of respect is good sportsmanship. You should never yell or throw your clubs whenever a shot doesn’t go the right way. Conversely, a boisterous attitude when you do make a great shot is frowned upon as bad form.

Golf is such a personal game that it can be hard to remember that you are sharing the course with possibly hundreds of other people on the same day. You should make every effort to ensure that the course is in the same (or better) condition as you found it in after you are finished with each hole. Common courtesy asks that you rake sand bunkers after you leave them to get rid of your footprints — and if someone else left footprints behind, you should rake theirs, too. Repair any divots that you create, as well as any ball marks you might make on the green. Golf carts are a great way to save time and energy when you are golfing, but if you drive them the wrong way, it can wreck the grass. Try to avoid any wet areas and spots that look like they’ve been getting beaten up by heavy foot traffic when you drive your cart. Also, never drive your golf cart across the sensitive putting green

Respect Other Players 3

Leave the Course the Way You Found It 4

The rules of golf etiquette can be a lot to remember, but none of them are particularly difficult to follow. Remember that golf is considered a refined game for a reason — it has a rich history full of people respecting one another and respecting the course. You should always strive to be worthy of the sport so that you can continue to carry on its rich legacy.

writing

editing

We have all had those moments where we sit in front of our laptop with a blank word document staring back at us. Whether it is for a school project or your short story manuscript, everybody writes. However the biggest problem that people face is how and where to start. Here are some of our tips on starting your writing process quickly without facing too much stress.

Step one, collect your ideas. For example, you could start with a mind map of what you want to write about in the centre. The mind map will become bigger as you collect more and more ideas for a certain section (i.e. characters). Once you collect most of your ideas for a section, try to form sentences out of what you have.

Step two, if you have a main character but you do not know much about that character, then try to write a letter from the character to yourself. Writing that letter should allow you to know a bit more of the character, and then writing about that character should be easier

Step three, try to be as descriptive as you can so that the reader can easily imagine where the story is taking place. While writing about the setting, you should have a clear image of it in your head. If you have described the setting really well, the reader should be whisked away from their everyday life.

Step four, once you have a few sentences or ideas, try to see how they can fit together. With the ideas that you have fitted together along with the story, things should now start to flow. With the story flowing, the writing should become easier because you have most of your ideas down in the mind map or in what you have already started writing.

Step five, when you have your first draft of your story, look over it once and see if there are any changes that need to be made. If there are changes, make them before you show the story to someone else. Once the changes are made, ask someone to look over your work and see if changes need to be made again. Make those changes and then you should have a great story.

Things to Remember:• Be sure to use good grammar• Have a good structure to your piece of writing• Make the piece of writing interesting• Include as many characters as needed• Hook the reader into the story• Challenge and enjoy yourself

56DrakeConcerts

Canadian hip-hop sensation Drake blew the crowds away with his phenomenal show at Dubai International Stadium last month, as he brought his Would You Like a Tour? show to the Middle East for the very first time.

The concert was the biggest ever seen in the GCC, with more than 391 moving lights and 17 tonnes of lighting fixtures and truss. Taking the thousands of strong crowds from where it all started, At the Bottom, to Here, "Drizzy” wowed his army of loyal fans, who had travelled from around the world to see the hottest rap star on the planet perform for one night only in Dubai.

Drake, who is known for his smash hits, Take Care and The Motto, sang all the favourites and blew the crowd away with his adrenalin-fuelled, high-energy show.

Those lucky enough to get their hands on a ticket for the show left chanting The Best We Ever Had, as Drake proclaimed, “This is the best time I’ve had in my entire life… I feel like I’m already home, I might make Dubai my home.” People of Dubai, be warned, as this town just might get a little cooler.

“This is the best time I’ve had in my entire life."

Concerts

Michael Bublé definitely wowed the crowds at Dubai Inter-national Stadium, Sports City, as he performed to crowds of more than 22,000 across his two-night show. It was an amazing experience listening to his smooth voice live, as he is definitely passionate and quite talented.

Bublé brought his Grammy award-winning To Be Loved world tour — which began with an unprecedented 10 sell-out shows at London’s O2 Arena — to Dubai, and the fans that travelled to the UAE for the show went wild. Belting out his hits including It’s A Beautiful Day, Feeling Good and Just Haven’t Met You Yet to an audience who sang along with him, Bublé ended the show with A Song For You, which left his desperate fans screaming for more.

When asked about his shows in Dubai, the multi-award-winning artist simply said, “You know, I was so excited to come to the UAE and me and my family have had the most incredible trip. What an amazing country, incredible fans and the show was one of the best so far. The crowds, the atmosphere — I felt so at home and I can’t wait to come back.”

"It was an amazing experience listening to his smooth voice live."

The Book Thief is about a girl, Liesel, who lives in Germany, and is taken away from her mother and forced to live with a

set of foster parents until the war is over because her mother is feared to be a communist. Throughout this journey,

Liesel makes new friends, such as Rudy, and begins to steal books. She steals her first book from her younger brother’s graveside by the train track and then she steals books from

the governors’ house. With the help of her foster dad, she learns how to read and write.

We would highly recommend this book because it is

interesting to read about what it was like to live in Nazi Germany. We also love the way the readers get easily

transported to another time and place and forget their everyday problems. We also like the way the story is narrated and this attracts a wider audience once they find out who the narrator is. What is interesting is the way the book is written

from the narrator’s perspective. Overall, The Book Thief is a great read for those who enjoy reading stories about history

and historical events.

The Giver is a dystopian novel about a young boy, Jonas, who lives in a society where emotions do not exist. Everybody sees in black and white, but Jonas can see beyond. People are assigned jobs at the age of 12 and this is when they start their training. Jonas has every factor to become the person who receives memories. Then he starts to see his world differently because he feels deeper emotions than the rest of his community, and he can see in colour.

Within the story 'the Giver' helps Jonas make the community see what is right and wrong, and also helps Jonas understand why he sees the world differently.

We liked this book because of the way it was written, as it is not a traditional dystopian novel and it easily allows the reader to be part of Jonas’ society. The Giver is a kind man who teaches Jonas what life used to be like and he helps Jonas understand why he sees the world differently. The Giver is a great novel for young adults who enjoy reading literature.

Featuring an exciting lineup of five exceptional films about football, New York University Abu Dhabi has launched the Kicking + Screening Football Film Festival, which was scheduled to run from March 12 to 14. The festival aimed to bring worldwide football culture to Abu Dhabi.

Set to unite football fans and celebrate the athleticism and passion of football games as captured on film, Kicking + Screening featured a documentary entitled Blue Moon Rising, which follows five devoted Manchester City supporters through the 2009-10 campaign, the first season after its purchase and transformation into a Premier League superpower. By turns hilarious, dramatic, moving and uplifting, the film is an exhilarating examination of the power of football to move people and an authentic story of passion and undying faith in a club — win, lose, or draw. Dedicated to showcasing the best of global football films through this emerging film genre, the festival’s roots can be traced to April 2009, when two fervent football and film fans, Greg Lalas and Rachel Markus, hatched an idea for a global festival celebrating football culture. For more information about the festival, and to view the complete program, please visit the website at: www.nyuad-artscenter.org/en_US/events/festivals/kicking-and-screening.
