Paul McCartney – Heaven On A Sunday – Flaming Pie ‘97

Written in August 1996 while in the US, it featured Linda and son, James McCartney who contributed the lead guitar.

George Harrison – My Sweet Lord - All Things Must Pass

‘70 This was the major smash hit of the album by Christmas 1970. It was originally

intended for the Edwin Hawkins Singers (who had record, “Oh Happy Day,” which greatly influenced “My Sweet Lord.” George had also let Billy Preston

release his own version before George’s – but it was George’s version that was the huge hit and remains the biggest single song success of his entire solo

career.

Ringo – Oh My Lord – Choose Love

John Lennon – God - Plastic Ono Band ‘70

This was the definitive track on the LP. This song was “stuck together” from three different, unfinished compositions. This included a laundry list of John’s

opinions on his lost beliefs (namely people and philosophies). This was the song that confirmed the Beatles were over – John revealed he didn’t believe in the band, nor was Paul the walrus. John finally reveals that he was indeed the

walrus.

The Beatles – Boys – Please Please Me

(Dixon-Farrell) Lead vocal: Ringo

Recorded in just one take on February 11, 1963. “Boys” was drummer Ringo Starr’s first recorded lead vocal. Luther Dixon and Wes Farrell’s song was originally recorded by The Shirelles and was the b-side to their smash hit “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” This song

was usually Ringo’s contribution at The Beatles’ live performances during their North American Tour in the summer of 1964.

Introducing… The Beatles - Vee-Jay LP The Early Beatles - Capitol LP

The Beatles - If I Fell - A Hard Day’s Night

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John and Paul

John Lennon’s stunning ballad “If I Fell” was by far the most complex song he had written to date. It could be considered a progression from “This Boy” with its similar

chord structure and intricate harmonies by John and Paul, recorded – at their request – together on one microphone. Performed live on their world tour throughout the summer of 1964. Completed in 15 takes on February 27, 1964. Flip side of “And I Love Her” in

the U.S. On U.S. album:

A Hard Day’s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP

The Beatles - I’ve Just Seen A Face - Help! (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul at the Asher family home on Wimpole Street. Paul had the tune prior to coming up with the lyrics and originally named the song “Auntie Gin’s Theme” because his aunt liked it. George Martin’s instrumental “Help!” album includes an orchestrated version of “I’ve Just Seen A Face” using the title “Auntie Gin’s Theme.” Recorded in six

takes at the same June 14, 1965 McCartney-dominated session that produced “Yesterday” and “I’m Down.” One of only five Beatles songs Paul chose to perform live

on his Wings Over America tour in 1976. On U.S. album:

until 4 a.m. the next morning. Overdubs include Paul on piano, George Martin on harmonium, and Ringo playing the maracas. The song is a full collaboration between

Lennon and McCartney, and began as an attempt to write a song based around a single note.

George Harrison – The Lord Loves The One (That Loves The Lord) - Living In The Material World ‘73

A lengthy-titled composition has a promising introduction, but fails to live up to George’s standards. It was also played live (for one night only) in 1974 and was

sent packing with “Who Can See It.”

The Beatles - All You Need Is Love - Non-LP track (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: John The Beatles’ fifteenth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label.

Written by John Lennon especially for the first-ever worldwide television transmission. The epic event, a 6-hour program entitled “Our World,” featured segments linking 24 countries in five continents via satellite, with a potential of 400 million viewers. The

Beatles were honored to be invited to represent Great Britain in the program. For the event, they would premiere a brand new song written just for the occasion. John

Lennon’s “All You Need Is Love” became the anthem of 1967, the summer of love. To decrease the chances of an on-air foul-up, George Martin had the Beatles play to their

own pre-recorded rhythm track. Only the vocals, bass guitar, lead guitar solo in the middle eight, drums and orchestra would be live. Recording began on June 14, 1967 at

Olympic Studios. In all, 33 takes of the basic rhythm track and a few vocals were completed this evening. Overdubbing the lead and backing vocals took place on June

19. The orchestra was recorded for the first time on June 23. On June 24, the day before the event, it was decided that “All You Need Is Love” would be issued as the new

Beatles single as soon as possible after the program aired the evening of June 25. Guests in the studio during the performance included the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the Who’s Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, Marianne Faithfull, Donovan

wore colorful mod clothing. The 13 orchestra members wore formal evening attire. After the guests left the studio, additional overdubs were made to what was now take 58. Ringo added the now-familiar snare drum roll to the song’s introduction and John re-

recorded part of his vocal. Chris Farley on LOVE

The Beatles – Golden Slumbers - Abbey Road Recorded w/ “Carry That Weight” as one song on July 2nd 1969

Based on a 400 year old poem by Thomas Decker whose original words were:

Golden Slumbers kiss your eyes; Smiles awake you when you rise. Sleep pretty wantons do not cry,

And I will sing a lullaby…..Paul wrote the rest of the lyrics. McCartney .7 / Decker .3

The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocals: John with Paul Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his “first real

major piece of work.” Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- “Eleanor Rigby” and “In My Life.” Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John’s Mellotron. The gorgeous

piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at

regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song. On U.S. album:

Lead vocal: Ringo

The second song to be recorded for the “White Album” was the first solo songwriting credit for Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr. Although Ringo had assistance from Paul

McCartney on the catchy, very McCartney-ish chorus (“Don’t pass me by, don’t make me cry, don’t make me blue, ‘cuz you know darlin’ I love only you”), the verses are all

Ringo, who had been dabbling with this song off and on since 1963! The rhythm track was recorded in three takes on June 5, 1968, with only Paul on piano and Ringo on

drums. Overdubs included a second piano part, sleigh bells, and bass guitar part. Work continued on June 6 with the recording of Ringo’s lead vocal. On July 12, outside

musician Jack Fallon was brought in to play the violin part. The quirky introduction was a seven-second edit piece of Paul tinkling piano keys, recorded on July 22. A slightly

longer introduction to the song was put together by George Martin, but was not used. This 48-second piece, entitled “A Beginning,” can be found on the “Anthology 3” album
