1 WINTER 2012 We are very excited to announce that Kimochi has completed purchase of a building at 453 North San Mateo Drive in San Mateo. From this new base, Kimochi can now provide expanded services in San Mateo for seniors and their families. The plan is to open doors by Summer 2013. Local response has been tremendous and more than we could have hoped for. “Families we met with eagerly await Kimochi’s arrival and, more importantly, they have been asking how they can help – financially and through their volunteer time and professional expertise,” says Steve Nakajo, Kimochi Executive Director. “This expansion to San Mateo has long been in the works. As our Japanese community has moved to outlying areas, it has become more challenging to serve them from San Francisco – and more difficult for families and seniors to access our help.” In preparation for expansion, Kimochi laid groundwork within the community three years ago. With support from San Mateo County Aging and Adult Services, Kimochi began outreach, education, referral and counseling services to family caregivers who are providing support for their parents and spouses at home. Anna Sawamura Higaki, Kimochi’s Program Director, and Shawne O’Connell, Program Planning Specialist, led the project and also assessed overall needs, prioritizing services Kimochi would need to roll-out to the community first. “Our goal is to make Kimochi San Mateo a community-based organization, to put down roots, tailor our services to seniors and families there, and ultimately, to have the community feel like Kimochi San Mateo is their home, too,” says Anna Sawamura Higaki. “A critical part of Kimochi, Inc.’s success has been the wide support of our volunteer base and our goal for Kimochi San Mateo is to have a similar foundation of volunteers to contribute to services and bring vitality to the facility and its residents.” In a vetting process which included senior Kimochi management and Executive Board, HKIT Architects has been retained to spearhead renovations and upgrade the facility. HKIT Architects has substantial experience and has been a leader in the field of senior housing. Kimochi, Inc.’s Associate Director, Steve Ishii, is assigned the challenging role of Project Director for Kimochi San Mateo. We are very excited to announce that Kimochi has completed purchase of a building at 453 North San Mateo Drive in San Mateo.

As our Japanese community has moved to outlying areas, it has become more challenging to serve them from San Francisco – and more difficult for families and seniors to access our help.”

In preparation for expansion, Kimochi laid groundwork within the community three years ago. With support from San Mateo County Aging and Adult Services, Kimochi began outreach, education, referral and counseling services to family caregivers who are providing support for their parents and spouses at home. Anna Sawamura Higaki, Kimochi’s Program Director, and Shawne O’Connell, Program Planning Specialist, led the project

and also assessed overall needs, prioritizing services Kimochi would need to roll-out to the community first.

“Our goal is to make Kimochi San Mateo a community-based organization, to put down roots, tailor our services to seniors and families there, and ultimately, to have the community feel

like Kimochi San Mateo is their home, too,” says Anna Sawamura Higaki. “A critical part of Kimochi, Inc.’s success has been the wide support of our volunteer base and our goal for Kimochi San Mateo is to have a similar foundation of volunteers to contribute to services and bring vitality to the facility and its residents.”

In a vetting process which included senior Kimochi management and Executive Board, HKIT Architects has been retained to spearhead

renovations and upgrade the facility. HKIT Architects has substantial experience and has been a leader in the field of senior housing.

Kimochi, Inc.’s Associate Director, Steve Ishii, is assigned the challenging role of Project Director for Kimochi San Mateo. His leadership and experience were instrumental in our purchase of the San Mateo site.

Change and transition are two words that come to my mind to describe the activity our

agency experienced this year. Although change is often difficult, I feel it brings great

opportunity for reflection, new dedication, and exciting growth. Staff is committed to

continuing the important work of supporting our seniors and families in the best way we

know, with “kimochi.”

On a personal note, I celebrated my 65th birthday earlier this year. For me, this was a change

I welcomed. With good health and the ongoing love and support of my family, I have

renewed energy and commitment to continue the important work I started with many of you.

Our philosophy and mission is as relevant today as it was when we began services, and our

goal to expand outside of San Francisco continues. We have purchased a site in San Mateo.

Exciting times are ahead!

A 37 year veteran of Kimochi, Inc., he has been key in the development of the agency’s continuum of care and successfully completed the San Francisco 1715 Buchanan building project in 1999.

Currently, the plan is to house 11-14 seniors for ambulatory and non-ambulatory care (wheelchair accessible). Additionally, space is being planned for seminars, social services and centralized outreach. Cultivation of some private, outdoor garden space is also in the works so seniors and families can enjoy the warm weather and socialize outdoors.

While this particular space will not have room for a congregate meal program like San Francisco, we are looking to upgrade the kitchen facilities to provide home-delivered meals as a next step

of services. Roll-out plans also include transportation and day care for seniors.

Ground-breaking is planned for January 2013 and we will kick off a capital campaign to raise the needed funds to complete renovations and open our doors. We are extremely excited about continuing the ‘Kimochi’ Japanese tradition of care for seniors and their families and will keep you posted on our progress.

How would you respond to this if you were me? Especially for those who live alone, speak little English, and have no family or relatives in the area. They have to deal with the fear every day that something traumatic may happen and they will be alone. Who will help them? Also with the advancement of technology, society has gotten more senior unfriendly. They need computers to get information and when you call any government office or business you have to follow a series of recorded directions to talk to a real person. For older people, this is difficult and frustrating; TOSHI WA TORITAKUNAI…I always tell them, yes it’s not easy to get old but how fortunate they are that services are available and the community is here for them. I assure them that Kimochi social workers are here to help support their independence for as long as possible.

Also we receive many inquiries from Japanese American families seeking help with caregiving for their aging parents. The challenge of assisting them in dealing with family conflict, identifying the best care plans that can support the dignity and independence of their parents, and help them understand the changes that aging brings is an important part of our work. We offer monthly caregiver support groups, a homecare registry

program to help families hire caregivers, and counseling services.

I tell seniors and families, yes, it is not easy to get old but SHIKATAGANAI, it can’t be helped. It happens to everyone and we just have to try our best to make things better. Kimochi is here to help. Let’s work through this together!

“You know Mr. Sango (this is my first name by the way), it’s not easy to get old, TOSHI WA TORITAKUNAI.

I am told this by my clients at least 3-4 times a day.

Bringing Holiday Traditions to Kimochi Home

The holiday season is a special time of the year at Kimochi Home. It’s a time of gatherings and traditions; a time of reflecting on the past year and looking forward to a new year.

In 2013, we will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Kimochi Home. Over the past 29 years, many people have passed through our doors - seniors needing services, families searching for support and information, and staff and volunteers who have a strong desire to give back to the community. All of these people are a part of our rich history and more importantly, a part of our community family.

Like every family, we have holiday traditions that we look forward to year after year. These traditions comfort us and celebrate our heritage and history.

Throughout the year, intergenerational visits with young people are eagerly anticipated by all at Kimochi Home and during the holidays these visits are extra special. It begins each year with the arrival of our Christmas tree from Troop 58. Together the scouts and seniors make ornaments and decorate the tree at Oyama Hall, the multipurpose room where most of the festivities take place.

We spend precious time making holiday crafts and taking photos with the scouts from Troop 29. The Kimochi Home seniors keep these photos as a remembrance and proudly display them in their rooms.

The festivities continue with a visit from the members of Satsuki-Kai, an afternoon of Christmas carols with the always energetic AARS residents and a collaboration of English and Japanese songs with the adorable children of Nihonmachi Little Friends.

The Kimochi Home Annual Christmas concert, organized by a devoted Kimochi supporter, features many talented musicians and special guests who entertain and heighten the Holiday spirit in all.

And of course, the season would not be complete without Santa who visits with everyone as he passes out gifts and spreads holiday cheer as only he can.

These are only a few of our holiday traditions and just a sampling of the many community family members that give of themselves to support us year after year.

All the community and family participation in these traditions expresses strong ties and love for our seniors and that these gatherings will continue for years to come. Spending time with

family and friends is a gift that is cherished and remembered forever.

Happy Holidays!

The continuing support of our program volunteers is vital to Kimochi’s efforts to provide care for our seniors. We are grateful for their dedication.

We would also like to thank all of our many Fundraising Volunteers who have continuously volunteered their time in

making our numerous events successful throughout the year. Your dedication and tireless efforts are very much appreciated by the Board of Directors, staff and seniors as it ensures the continuation of Kimochi’s many programs and services.

Riyo’s relationship with KimochiIn 1991, thinking I could still be useful after my retirement, I came to Kimochi trying to be a volunteer. Little did I know that 13 ½ years later Kimochi would become such an important part of my life. Since that fateful day in May, I’ve joined the Kimochi staff, became a member of their Club Nikkei program, and volunteered at many fundraising events. I’ve made many good friends and re-connected with my community within Japantown. I am proud to be counted as part of the Kimochi family!

This year the Kimochi Spirit Awards celebration honored a unique set of individuals and organizations for their special service to the Japanese American community, seniors, and Kimochi kai. The event was held in May at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas in San Francisco.

Norman Mineta, former Congressman, mayor of San Jose, secretary of transportation and cabinet member under the Clinton and Bush administrations, was the recipient of the Nihonmachi Spirit Award. This is a new award instituted by Kimochi to recognize individuals who have made outstanding service and commitment to the Japanese American community

Also, honored was U.S. Congressman Mike Honda who represents the 15th Congressional District of California. Congressman Honda, a longtime resident of San Jose, CA, is a former teacher who has worked tirelessly to support education and immigration issues as well as senior services for California.

A special honoree for Kimochi is a familiar face to Kimochi seniors, volunteers, and staff. Anna Sawamura Higaki was honored for her service as program director for over 20 years. Anna is responsible for the management of Kimochi’s information, referral, and outreach services including the nutrition program, family caregiver services, adult social day care, 24-hour residential and respite care, just to name a few.

She is also leading Kimochi’s services into San Mateo County. Her inspiration, she simply stated, is the “love and honor of Obachan and Ojichan.”

Longtime community activist and Kimochi supporter, Bo Yoshimura, was honored posthumously. Bo was a native San Franciscan who’s volunteerism spanned his lifetime. His service includes Kimochi, United Japanese Community Services, API

Legal Outreach, Japanese Community Youth Council, Japanese American American Citizens League, Nikkei and Retirement, and Asian American Recovery Services.

Kimochi honored California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) for its commitment to medical care for the residents and particularly the seniors of San Francisco, the Western Addition and Japantown communities.

Program entertainment featured ukulele and song by Ka’ala Dee Carmack, musical performances by the Nihonmachi Little Friends Singers and the Kimochi Singers. Serving as MCs were longtime Kimochi supporters Amy Hill (actor and performer) and Judi Nihei (director, performer, and former project coordinator of the Japantown Planning, Preservation, and Development Task Force).

Kimochi wishes to thank the many individuals, organizations, companies, and corporations who contributed support to the 2012 Spirit Awards.

It is always Kimochi’s goal to promote community spirit, friendship, good times, and good health. The annual Kimochi Old Timers Fun Basketball Tournament is one of the many Kimochi events that embody this concept. This year the tourney celebrated its 19th year! Chairpersons Moses Yasukochi and Richard Eijima once again served as organizers and player/coaches. Eight teams representing 91 players participated this year in 58 years and older and 50 years and older categories. Teams from San Francisco, the East Bay, Sacramento, and Seattle all took to the Japanese Cultural and Community Center court

this past July. In fact, the Seattle team (58 years and older) has supported Kimochi and the tournament for the past 15 years. “It’s a good time and purely for fun,” said chairman Moses Yasukochi, “ and the funds raised go to a good cause, Kimochi services for seniors, and let’s face it all of us playing basketball now are just about there!” For the 20th Annual Kimochi Old Timers Fun Basketball Tournament organizers hope to expand the number of teams, and they encourage players from around the Bay Area and California to participate. For more information contact Kimochi at (415) 931-2294.

The 19th Annual Kimochi Old Timers Fun Basketball Tournament

This past October, Sansei Live! celebrated its 29th year as a premier Kimochi kai fundraising event. This year Sansei Live! featured the familiar with the new. Sansei Live! 2012 revived a previous Sansei Live! theme, “Is-Sho-Ni (Coming Together).” This concept is meant to reflect Kimochi’s efforts to connect all generations of the Japanese American community and all people who support Kimochi’s programs and services to the common goal of providing culturally sensitive care for seniors.

For the first time the event was held at The Event Center at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Robert Handa and Jana Katsuyama from KTVU Fox 2 News hosted the evening’s festivities. Four hundred guests enjoyed dancing to the music of the Reminisce Band and Big City Revue. Also, the 2012 Cherry Blossom Queen Court put on a special musical performance with Michael Sasaki and Benny

Luis. Additionally, origami artist Linda Mihara was on hand to teach attendees how make a variety of works of paper folding art including special Halloween pumpkins.

The 2012 & 2011 Cherry Blossom Queen Courts did double duty this year by helping once again to promote the raffle drawing that included roundtrip tickets from Southwest Airlines, and the grand prize, roundtrip tickets to Tokyo from Japan Airlines.

Kimochi wishes to thank the many supporters who contributed to Sansei Live! this year as corporate sponsors, benefactors, patrons, advertisers, and raffle prize donors. And the organization especially thanks the many supporters and party-goers who “came together” to celebrate Sansei Live! “Is-Sho-Ni.”

On Saturday, September 15th, Kimochi held its 2nd Annual Show ‘n Shine Car Show at the College of San Mateo. It was a day of perfect weather, fun oldies music, delicious food, fantastic raffle prizes, and, of course, great cars!

With polished chrome and beautiful paint jobs, over 70 classic, hotrod, street and muscle cars were shown representing American cars in all shapes and sizes from the ‘20’s to early ‘70’s. The public voted for their favorite cars in the following categories: Best “Cruisin” Car, Best “Dating” Car, Best “Eye Catcher” Car, My “Dream Car” and the perpetual “People’s Choice”.

A “Thank You” to all who came out and a very special “Thank You” to the car owners for their support in this outreach event promoting our services in San Mateo!

A slideshow of the day is available for viewing on Kimochi’s website at www.kimochi-inc.org. If you would like to show a car at next year’s 3rd Annual Show ‘n Shine Car Show, be a sponsor, or donate a raffle prize, contact Steve Ishii at (415) 931-2294 or [email protected].

31st Annual Kimochi Golf TournamentMartin Fleisher was the big winner over a field of 144 enthusiastic golfers at this year’s 31st Annual Kimochi Golf tournament held on September 14, 2012 at the Richmond Country Club. Under beautiful sunny weather, Fleisher shot a net 63 to win Field Low Net honors and the prestigious Tosh Hara-Sam Sato Memorial Perpetual Trophy.

Our tournament chairs, Lowell and Donna Kimura, and Jerry Kika did a fabulous job leading a dedicated golf tournament

committee and volunteer corps including the 2012 Cherry Blossom Queen Court in holding another successful event for us. All proceeds will go towards supporting our programs and services for seniors and families throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area.

We would also like to thank our hole sponsors and the numerous individuals and companies who donated to support our tournament raffle. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Since 1971, Kimochi, Inc. has developed and promoted an intergenerational philosophy of care for seniors and families. The word “kimochi” means “feelings” in Japanese. For our organization it refers to our feelings for our older generations. A few Sansei (third generation Japanese Americans) realized that because of language and cultural barriers, many elderly Issei (first generation Japanese Americans) were unable to take advantage of mainstream social services. The organization formed when these Sansei volunteers began looking for ways to assist the older generation. Today, Kimochi, Inc. provides care and support to more than 3,000 seniors and their families throughout San Francisco.

Social Services ProgramKimochi’s Social Services program provides Japanese and Korean language translation, information and referral, naturalization assistance, counseling, assistance with insurance and government benefits, seminars and workshops on aging. Case management services help clients and families identify additional resources to keep seniors at home and independent for as long as possible. The program also provides English and Japanese Family Caregiver Support Services. This service targets spouses, siblings, and children who are actively involved in caring for a senior and provides them with counseling services, family caregiver support groups, assistance with hiring caregivers to help the family, and 24 hour respite care placements. Kimochi collaborates with the San Francisco Transitional Care Network. The program targets isolated seniors discharged from acute care hospitals who benefit from more community based care and support as they transition home.

The program annually assists 600 seniors and families providing 5,000 hours of services.

Club NikkeiClub Nikkei is a membership based program for targeted seniors in our community. It is designed to outreach and attract healthy, independent seniors who are interested in joining a group for exciting overnight trips, dinners, and activities. Staff plans quarterly calendars and all transportation for excursions is provided by our transportation program.

Home Safety ServiceKimochi offers a home safety program for senior homeowners and renters in San Francisco. Staff conducts home safety assessments and helps seniors identify potential and existing safety issues that could compromise their ability to live safely and comfortably at home. Staff can assist and provide smoke detectors, stair strips, and other items free of charge. We have also compiled a referral list of contractors, electricians, and plumbers who can help seniors in maintaining and repairing their homes.

AdministrationThe Administrative building is owned and operated by the agency and houses the administrative staff. We have approximately 200 volunteers assisting us each year in our programs.

The Kimochi Lounge, located within Japan Center, is the agency’s original site. Seniors come to “the lounge” to catch up on community news and socialize. The site also houses a book and video library where seniors can check out materials for free. In 2007, a new senior information and resource section was added to have important health, safety, nutrition, and caregiving resources available for seniors and families. In July 2009, we opened the lounge for seniors and families on Saturdays.

This site is annually visited by 5,000 seniors, families, and visitors from throughout California and other countries.

NutritionA nutritious well-balanced Japanese style hot lunch is provided 5 days a week. Any senior 60 years of age or older is welcome. A five week menu is produced by staff, and our nutritionist ensures each meal is healthy, nutritionally well-balanced and adequately proportioned for seniors. An average of 300 meals is served daily.

The program annually serves 1,200 seniors 75,000 lunches.

Home Delivery ProgramIndividuals who are physically unable to travel to the nutrition site due to a disability, illness, or recent hospital discharge, can receive hot meals at their homes. Approximately 120 lunches are delivered to homebound seniors living in Japantown, the Western Addition, Sunset, and Richmond districts of San Francisco.

The program annually serves 130 homebound and frail seniors 29,000 lunches.

Senior CenterIn addition to enjoying lunch at the nutrition program, seniors are encouraged to participate in activities at the center. Staff and volunteers plan and offer a variety of activities on a monthly basis. We have morning exercise classes, a ceramics class, group singing classes, odori, bingo, arts and crafts, day trips, and overnight trips.

Kimochi From the Heart

Bringing smiles to others without expectation is very rewarding for us. We look forward to the abundance of smiles and praises when we bring our dahlias to Kimochi Home. The residents literally light up as they see our flowers and we always leave on an incredible high. It’s an extremely heart-warming experience.
