Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary General, United Nations Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania took office as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 February 2007. Dr. Migiro served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 2006-2007—the first woman in the United Republic of Tanzania to hold that position since its independence in 1961. H.E. Mr. Miloš Koterec, Sixty-Eighth President, Economic and Social Council

Ambassador Miloš Koterec became President of the Economic and Social Council on 10 January 2012 after serving as Senior Vice-President of the Council in 2011.

Ambassador Koterec has assumed his functions as Permanent Representative of Slovakia to the United Nations in September 2009. During his current tenure, he has served in several positions, including as Chairman of the Disarmament and International Security Committee (First Committee) of the 65th session of the General Assembly and as a member of the Search Committee for the selection of Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

Prior to his current position, Ambassador Koterec was a Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to July 2009. From 2001 to 2004 he worked as Deputy Head of Slovak Mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels, serving as Charge d`affaires a.i. in 2003. From 1999 until 2001, Mr. Koterec worked in the Foreign Ministry’s Department for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Disarmament and Council of Europe, first as Chief of the Disarmament Section and in 2000 as Director.  From 1995 until 1999 he worked at the Permanent Mission of Slovakia to the United Nations in New York in the rank of First Secretary. He started his civil servant career in 1993 and was later appointed Chief of the United Nations Section in the Department of the United Nations and Other International Organizations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary General, United Nations

Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania took office as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 February 2007. She is the third Deputy Secretary-General to be appointed since the post was established in 1997. Dr. Migiro served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 2006-2007—the first woman in the United Republic of Tanzania to hold that position since its independence in 1961. Before that, she was Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children for five years.

As Foreign Minister, Dr. Migiro spearheaded Tanzania’s engagement in the pursuit of peace, security and development in the Great Lakes Region. Her work was published widely in local and international journals.

Dr. Migiro served as a member of Tanzania’s Law Reform Commission in 1997 and as a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women in 2000.

Ms. Magatte Wade, Founder, Tiossano

Ms. Magatte Wade is a serial entrepreneur who was born in Senegal, educated in France, and who started her entrepreneurial career in the U.S.  Her first company, Adina World Beverages, was based on indigenous Senegalese beverage recipes and has now become one of the most widely distributed U.S. brands started by an African entrepreneur.  She recently launched her second company, The Tiossano Tribe, which sells skin care products based on indigenous Senegalese recipes at high-end boutiques and at www.tiossano.com.  She was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum at Davos for 2011 and Forbes named her one of the “20 Youngest Power Women of Africa.”  Magatte is a frequent speaker on college campuses, including Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, MIT, etc.  She writes for The Huffington Post and reviews books for Barron’s.

Ms. Conny Czymoch, TV Moderator, Phoenix TV

Ms. Conny Czymoch has been with the German political events and documentary TV channel Phoenix for the last 10 years, anchoring their flag-ship programme  Der Tag  (the day’s wrap-up) since its inception. For the last decade, Conny has also engaged in conference moderation - for EU, federal and non-profit organisations, as well as corporate customers, covering a host of global topics. She is also an executive coach for media communication. For several years, Conny has been an advocate against human trafficking and for women’s rights, working for the NOTforSALE campaign and Terre des Femmes. She received The  Hugo-Junkers Award  for excellence in space journalism in 2007.

1) José María Sanz-Magallón, C.E.O., Telefónica Internacional USA

Mr. José María Sanz-Magallón is the CEO of Telefónica Internacional USA. He has been working for Telefónica since 1997, mainly in the marketing, communications and public affairs areas. Before joining Telefonica, Mr. Sanz-Magallón worked as Marketing Manager for Direct Seguros (AXA Group) and as Marketing Executive and Manager for American Express in Spain and London. He has recently participated in the UN Leadership Forum on Climate Change. Mr. Sanz-Magallón is chairman of the Board of Trustees of Fundacion Castillo de Monteagudo and member of the Board of Directors of The Spain – U.S. Chamber of Commerce in New York and of the Advisory Board of Institute for Latin American Studies at Columbia University. He has also served in the board of institutions as AETIC (Spanish ICT Industry Association) and Club de Exportadores e Inversores.

2) Ms. Sharan Burrow, General Secretary, International Trade Union Federation

Ms. Sharan Burrow is General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation and former President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. She is the first woman to become General Secretary of the ITUC since its foundation in 2006, and was the second woman to become President of the ACTU. She also serves as Honorary Co-Chair for the World Justice Project, which leads global, multidisciplinary efforts to strengthen the Rule of Law for the development of communities of opportunity and equity. In the past, she has participated in the “World Day for Decent Work” event. The ITUC, through its Youth Committee, is initiating and developing policies and actions that promote identification and active participation of young people in trade union internationalism. In March 2010, the ITUC launched a new campaign to connect global trade union work to the recruitment and organising of young people which uses video, social networking, posters and websites, as well as special campaign guides.

3) Ms. Reeta Roy, President and CEO, MasterCard Foundation

Ms. Reeta Roy Reeta Roy is President and CEO of The MasterCard Foundation—an independent, global foundation based in Toronto, Canada. The Foundation advances innovative microfinance and youth learning strategies to promote financial inclusion and prosperity. Under her leadership, the Foundation has collaborated with committed partners in 48 countries to expand access to education and learning for young people and financial access to those living in poverty in developing countries; the majority of whom are in Africa. Prior to joining the Foundation, Reeta was the Divisional Vice President of Global Citizenship and Policy at Abbott, and Vice President of the Abbott Fund. She held a number of positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company working on global health and private-public partnerships. Reeta received her M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University and her B.A. from St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

4) Dr. James Mwangi, CEO and Managing Director, Equity Bank, Kenya

Dr. James Mwangi holds four honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of his contributions to the Kenyan society. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, is a Certified Public Accountant, and has been honoured twice with Presidential national awards. He is currently the Chairman of Kenya’s Vision 2030 Delivery Board charged with the responsibility of ensuring Kenya becomes a middle income country with global high standards of living by the year 2030. James serves on several international bodies as an advisor and sits on the Board of the Africa Leadership Academy in South Africa, as well as having over 22 years of management experience. In recent years, Equity Bank has played a pivotal role in Kenya’s development through microfinance and by extending financial services to low-income consumers in the informal sector.

Ms. Ronnie Goldberg, Executive Vice President, US Council for International Business & Business and Regional Vice President, International Organization of Employers

Ms. Ronnie Goldberg is USCIB’s chief policy officer, overseeing activities on international trade, investment, economic and regulatory matters, and supervising a staff of policy professionals whose expertise covers a host of issues affecting American companies engaged in business abroad. Ms. Poonam Ahluwalia, President, Youth Employment Network

Ms. Poonam Ahluwalia is the founder and executive director of the Youth Employment Summit, a program of the Education Development Center, an international, non-profit research and development organization and managing director of the YES Academy International. Under her leadership, YES has created and implemented a 10-year international campaign to ensure that youth throughout the world have access to the education and training programs, skills development opportunities, resources, and credit that they need to build productive, decent, and sustainable livelihoods.

Mr. William Reese, President and CEO, International Youth Foundation

Mr. William Reese was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Youth Foundation in 2005, having joined IYF in May 1998 as its Chief Operating Officer. He was President and CEO of Partners of the Americas for twelve years. He currently sits on the board of The Prince’s Youth

Business International in the UK as well as InterAction, where he served previously as Chair.

1) Ms. Linda Ben, Owner, Leshaua’s & Executive Vice President, JCI International-South Africa

Ms. Linda Ben is a well-established business woman and owner of Leshaua’s, a project management company. She is also a partner at Likhomtesh, a transport services company based in Eastern Cape and the 2012 Executive Vice President of Junior Chamber International South Africa. After much success in her early professional career, Linda has provided countless opportunities to youth including procurement policies which prioritize youth owned businesses. Her company has also implemented hiring processes which give young professionals job opportunities and training, as well as placement services after the end of their contracts with her company. Aside from running her own businesses, Linda is also passionate about creating positive change in her community. She is a member of Junior Chamber International, where she has served as a Local President and is currently the National Executive Vice President in South Africa. JCI’s mission is to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change and to lead a global network of young active citizens. They also host various conferences around the world each year, including the JCI Global Partnership Summit, where the citizens of JCI unite with leaders of business, government, and civil society to address future challenges and coordinate efforts between the three sectors.

2) Mr. Chris Bashinelli, Executive Director, Bridge the Gap TV

Mr. Chris Bashinelli is an actor and Founder of “Bridge the Gap TV.” As EP and Host of the internationally recognized series, Chris has traversed the globe from Tanzania to Thailand. He’s worked with UN Ambassadors and has partnered with international NGO’s including the Jane Goodall Institute and Do Something.org. Chris travels the world as a Youth Expert for the United Nations, meeting with people and finding out what issues matter to them most. He’s spoken in the UN General Assembly Hall with Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and at conferences in Azerbaijan, Brazil, and Qatar. Most recently Chris moderated the United Nations International Day of Peace.

3) Ms. Eriko Yamaguchi, CEO and Founder, Motherhouse Company

Ms. Eriko Yamaguchi is the CEO and Founder of Motherhouse Company, which is a fashion brand specialized in handbags produced in developing countries. Motherhouse uses business to break the prejudices and biases held against developing countries and looks to re-establish confidence in their customers in the quality of the work overseas and also in the artisans themselves. Their mission is to break the structure which creates poverty and inequalities in the world and they actively foster the idea of fair trade through direct deals with producers in Bangladesh and other developing countries. Eriko has received increasing media exposure as a leading young entrepreneur and “social entrepreneur and was awarded as Social Entrepreneur of the Year in Japan by the Schwab Foundation in 2010.  She is also Mentor for MIT Legatum Center for Development & Entrepreneurship.

4) Mr. AbdulMohsen Al-Badr, Director of Programme Development, Al Ghad Youth Forum-Saudi Arabia

Mr. AbdulMohsen Al-Badr is the CEO of the Global Competitiveness Forum and the Director of Programme Development for the Al Ghad Youth Forum, a forum for the youth of Saudi Arabia which seeks to be the main catalyst in creating a suitable and encouraging environment for the Saudi youth, and to support their participation in achieving sustainable development in all prospects. Their mission is to act on increasing awareness and interest in youth affairs and to encourage initiatives that contribute to development through partnerships in youth-related sectors. The Al Ghad Youth Forum also encourages youth awareness, highlights young role models, and sheds light on the most significant matters and challenges faced by Saudi youth, in addition to many other projects and initiatives.

Mr. Tyrone Hall, Research Specialist, Integra

Mr. Tyrone Hall has worked on microfinance, health, agriculture and ICT projects in Austria, Barbados, Jamaica, Haiti and the United States and is the 2010 winner of the ACP-EU Innovations in ICT for Agriculture and Rural Development contest. He has also done consulting projects with international organizations to bridge and advance the intersection between youth, ICT, agriculture and health.

Mr. Boris Bulayev, Executive Director, Educate!

Mr. Boris Bulayev is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Educate!, an organization he’s been running since he was 19 with a friend from college. Educate! works to develop young entrepreneurs and leaders in Africa and has been widely recognized for its innovative model. Before jumping into Educate! full time, Boris worked at startup incubator Loeb Enterprises, learning about entrepreneurship and how to start companies. Boris emigrated from Latvia at age 7, and is a Startingbloc fellow, an Empact100 Top Young Entrepreneur of 2011, and a recipient of the 2012 Grinnell College Young

Innovator for Social Justice Prize.

Nicole R Goldin, PhD, Senior Advisor, Policy, Planning and Learning Chair Youth Policy Task Team, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)

Dr. Nicole Goldin is Senior Advisor in the Policy, Planning and Learning Bureau at the U.S. Agency for International Development where she manages internal policy/strategy creation and engagement processes as well as critical inter-agency development policy initiatives, particularly focused on Youth and adolescent Girls. She joined USAID in September 2009 from the Department of State where she was Senior Advisor to Undersecretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, Maria Otero, for strategic and policy planning and led policy on global Youth, Africa, and International Organizations. She is a global development and social change expert specializing in policy, partnership creation, strategy, research, and communication. Her experience spans public, corporate, finance, and non-profit sectors on economic opportunity, institution building, CSR, education, democracy and governance and cross-cutting youth and urbanization issues. Prior to joining government, Nicole last worked with Peace Dividend Trust (PDT) as Managing Economist leading research and projects related to economic recovery and stabilization. Other previous experience includes 10 years working and consulting in the development and finance sectors with such organizations and firms as the Clinton Global Initiative, Gerson Lehrman Group, Chemonics International, and IFES. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from UK’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), an MSc in Development from the London School of Economics (LSE), an MA in International Political Economy from American University, and a BA in East Asian Studies from Union College. Dr. Goldin has lived, worked, and traveled in over 50 countries across all 7 continents.

Mr. José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Director-Employment Sector, ILO

Mr. Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs was appointed Executive Director of the Employment Sector of the ILO effective 15 August 2005. Prior to joining the ILO, Mr Salazar-Xirinachs was Chief Trade Adviser and Director of the Trade Unit at the Organization of American States, supporting OAS member States in matters related to trade policy and economic integration, in particular, negotiating a Free Trade Area of the Americas. From 1997 to 1998, Mr Salazar-Xirinachs was Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica, a period that included Costa Rica’s chairmanship of the FTAA process. From 1994 to 1997, he served as Executive Director of the Federation of Private Entities of Central America and Panama and from 1990 to 1994, as the Federation’s Chief Economist. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Costa Rica from 1995 to 1997. From 1988 to 1990, he was Executive President of the Costa Rican Development Corporation.

Mr. Ronald B. Bruder, Founder & Chair, Education for Employment

Mr. Ron Bruder is the founder and chair of Education for Employment (EFE), a non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to creating employment opportunities for youth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). A network of independent, locally-run affiliates, EFE identifies critical skill gaps in the local economy, then develops and manages targeted training programs which ensure job placement through on-the-ground partnerships with employers and civic and educational organizations. After graduating its first class in 2006 EFE expanded rapidly, and currently operates in West Bank/Gaza, Egypt, Morocco, Yemen, Jordan and Tunisia, with a sister support organization in Spain. Honored by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People for his nonprofit work with EFE, Bruder began as a serial entrepreneur. In 1977, Mr. Bruder founded The Brookhill Group, which owns and manages properties throughout the US with a focus on creating investment partnerships to develop and/or redevelop shopping centers, office buildings and multi-family homes. Mr. Bruder was an attendee at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He has served as a delegate of the Council on Foreign Relations to the Jeddah Economic Forum, and as a contributor to the US-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Qatar.

Mr. Badr Jafar, President, Crescent Petroleum. CEO, Crescent Investments

Mr. Badr Jafar is President of Crescent Petroleum, headquartered in the United Arab Emirates for over 40 years and with offices worldwide, where he leads project development and financial deal structuring activities for the Group.  Mr Jafar also serves as CEO of Crescent Investments, the Group’s project investments division, and as Chairman of Gas Cities LLC, a joint venture between Crescent Petroleum and Dana Gas PJSC.  He is also actively involved in business development in Dana Gas PJSC, the Gulf region’s first and largest listed private sector natural gas company, and serves on its International Advisory Board.  Mr Jafar serves as Chairman of Pearl Petroleum, a partnership between Crescent Petroleum, Dana Gas, OMV of Austria and MOL of Hungary.

Mr. Jafar is an active member of the Young Presidents’ Organisation, serving as board member for the YPO Emirates Chapter. He also co-founded Pearl Initiative, a venture between the Gulf Region of Middle East and the United Nations Office for Partnerships to promote a culture of transparency and accountability. Mr Jafar is a member of the Synergos Arab World Social Innovators (AWSI) Program Board of Governors. He is also a member of the Business Advisory Council of the American University of Sharjah, as well as Chair of the Alumni Advisory Council of the Cambridge University Judge Business School and a board member of their International Advisory Board. Mr Jafar was recently honoured as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.

Mr. Sha Zukang, Under Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs

Mr. Sha Zukang became the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs on July 2007. As such, he heads the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, which is responsible for the follow-up to the major United Nations Summits and Conferences, and services the Second and Third Committees of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council as well as the vast majority of its functional commissions and expert bodies. He also convenes the Executive Committee on Economic and Social Affairs, the UN Secretariat’s network for joint planning and initiatives on development.

Mr. Sha Zukang has extensive experience with multilateral organizations and international conferences. He was Chairman of the Preparatory Committee and Chairman of the Committee of the Whole, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), President of the Trade and Development Board, 50th Session of UNCTAD, Chairperson of the Government group of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization, and member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament matters. He made great contributions to mine clearance in China and many parts of the world. He encouraged the development of Chinese non-governmental organizations, and facilitated the opening of offices in China by international organizations.
