Science Live – The “Science Live” parents evening was held on Tuesday
and it was wonderful to see students explaining scientific concepts and
experiments to their parents. I have been astounded by how much
children know and understand as a result of this science push and I
congratulate them on their work. The exercise has been a great success
based on the amount of interest and enthusiasm generated and the quality of the
learning in science. I thank the staff team for their work and the experts and assistants who
have supported us in this school wide focus. Thank you to all the parents who came along
to the Science Live night – we hadn’t expected all of you to arrive en-masse at 6:25 pm
and as such I apologise for the parking debacle/driveway gridlock that resulted – we will
be better prepared in this area next time!
PARUMOANA INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY – The Parumoana Inter-School Cross Country
was held at Battle Hill on Tuesday and our team dominated the event and “ran off” with
the overall trophy. Congratulations to the team for an outstanding achievement - I cannot
recall a time when any school has ever had such overall success at an interschool event.

the Regional Cross Country to be held at Masterton next Tuesday – the most I can
remember. Thank you to Laura Brennan and Brendon Cross and to the Parumoana
Sports Association for the great organisation.

PLAYGROUND UPGRADE – The Board of Trustees has accepted a proposal from Playco
Equipment Ltd. to refurbish both modular playgrounds. This involves refurbishing existing
posts and decks and installing new and different componentry within the existing
configuration. Componentry will be built/prepared over the next couple of months
and the actual work will begin when the weather warms up. We are hoping for
completion by the end of October. The Board thanks Jonny Baxter for his work and
expertise in tendering this work. Follow the links to the PDF Concept Drawings.
MID YEAR CULTURAL PERFORMANCES - Two separate concerts will be held in the school
hall next Thursday (11 July). This is an opportunity for the school choirs, bands and kapa
haka groups to perform before an audience and to demonstrate some of the items
they have prepared to date. The Kowhai/Mana performance will be held at 6:30pm
and the Hongoeka/Taupo Performance at 7:45pm. The performances are expected to
last approx. 45 minutes. Parking will be available in the top playground and we will
have “Parking Wardens” on hand. We will need to let those leaving after the junior
performance get out before letting vehicles up the drive for the senior performance.
INFORMATION SHARING/REVIEWING INTERVIEWS - Information Sharing/Reviewing
Interviews will be held on the afternoon/evening of Thursday 8 August and Thursday 15
August next term (Weeks 2 & 3). These interviews are a key component of our process
for reporting student progress to parents and students are encouraged to attend. A
maximum of 20 minutes is allocated for each interview and parents will receive a short
written report outlining their child’s achievement in relation to the National Standards
and identifying their next learning steps at the interview. Interview times can now be
booked online by following the link in the Breaking News section of our website or by
clicking on Book School Interviews and entering the Code UVCTN. In recent years we
have managed to hold interviews for every child in the school and we are aiming to
do this again this year.

Humpty Dumpty
You know the story of the stupid egg he fell off the wall and hit his head. But that's not the real story did you know that's not even how the half of it goes. It seems the editors got it wrong then put it in a stupid song. The story does not even make sense Why would an egg sit on a fence? In the real story, he's not even an egg who did not fall down and hit his head. His name was not even Humpty Dumpty it was a weird little name of Mr Bumbty. He was not even an egg at all he was a man would was round and small. Ella-Scarlett, Room 22
In Science this term I learnt about water. I learnt fanta sinks in water and diet coke
floats because it has less sugar. The best time to water your garden is at
dawn or duck because the sun evaporates water. The people of Wellington use 1 million litres of
water per day. 290km of pipes go around Porirua to
transport water to houses and pools. Chlorine is used to clean our water. Water pollution is a major problem. Every living thing needs water. By Callum, Room 22

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES met on Wednesday, 3 July. At that meeting the Board:
Approved the Principal’s delegations of authority
Received an overview of the school funding and resourcing mechanisms.
Received the 2012 Learning Support Report and the 2012 Gifted & Talented Report
and noted how much is being done in these areas.
Received information about our new Draft 10 Year Property Pan.
Confirmed the appointments of Emma Currie and Adi Sutherland to permanent posi-
tions and Kristen Finlayson to a Long Term relieving position in Kowhai Syndicate.
Accepted the quote from Playco for the renovation of both the Junior and Senior
Playgrounds.
Noted that storm damage had mostly been fixed.

SUPER FOODS; SPINACH AND KALE!
These super foods are a good source of vitamins A, C, and E, K, folate and fiber.
They are easy to grow, and you can add them to salads, soups and casseroles.
Try this – Kale Chips!
Take stems off and tear leaved into pieces. Place in bowl with olive oil, dried chili
flakes, paprika, salt and pepper.
Toss and place on baking tray in a single layer.
Bake for 10 – 12 minutes for 180⁰ Sprinkle with lemon zest.
These super foods have super tastes!

INTER SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY - On Tuesday 50 students took part in the Interschool
Cross Country held at Battle Hill. All of the children represented Plimmerton School proudly
and performed to the best of their ability. Congratulations to the 29 students who finished
in the top 10 in their event and made it into the Parumoana team to go to the regional
event to be held in Masterton on Tuesday 9th July. Plimmerton School did fantastically well
and won the overall trophy for the best performing school.
Top 10 placings in each event were:
