Hello BANS members and fellow nursing students,

First, I would like you to join me in congratulating our treasurer, Charnella Rosas, on becoming the newly elected North District Director for the Georgia Association of Nursing Students! Last month, we had the incredible opportunity to attend the Georgia Association of Nursing Student’s annual state convention. Brenau's First Resolution Passed By Tara Davis, Legislative Chair

Brenau's resolution passed the House of Delegates, after some pro/con discussion and the chance for the Brenau authors to speak for the resolution from both their own experiences and their research. Working closely with the American Red Cross, Tara, Abby, and Charnella developed the resolution based upon a request from our local Hall County and North District Red Cross Representative that we find a way to encourage students to give blood- and educate their families about the Red Cross- in the first week of each year when blood supplies are at the very lowest, and need is critical.

Our successful resolution, titled IN SUPPORT OF GANS DESIGNATION OF THE FIRST WEEK IN JANUARY 2014 AS AMERICAN RED CROSS AWARENESS WEEK TO PROMOTE GEORGIA NURSING STUDENTS' AWARENESS OF AND PARTICIPATION IN THE MISSION OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS, calls for GANS to observe Red Cross Week the first of January and distribute educational material to GANS members learn about the three-part US Government chartered mission of the Red Cross. Please remember to give blood in this critical January week if you are eligible, and take your friends and family with you!

This October at the annual GANS convention, BANS Officers Tara Davis, Abigail Rodriguez, and Charnella Rosas brought a resolution to the floor of the GANS House of Delegates for adoption. This was tremendously exciting for Brenau, because this was the first resolution ever brought by Brenau University! A resolution is generally a proposal that GANS support awareness of a cause, make a policy change, or encourage GANS members to "do" something in particular. The resolution itself must state supporting reasons and cited evidence as to why the resolution is necessary and why it is a good idea for GANS delegates to support with their vote. The resolution also then details what exactly the GANS Board and GANS members should do, not leaving this to chance or to interpretation.

Legislative Day By Tara Davis, Legislative Chair

Looking forward into Spring semester, January brings GNA Legislative Day at the State Capitol in Atlanta. The Georgia Nurses' Association partners with the state's student nurses to rally around issues that the GNA determines each year are the most important to nurses. Last year, over 900 student nurses joined the GNA. Student groups can make an appointment to meet with their legislator to tell him or her how we feel and show that our vote counts. Legislators need to know that we pay attention to issues that impact nurses and our licensure. Seeing us out in force reminds them that we appreciate their efforts on our behalf, and that we vote for those who support nursing. There is always a huge group picture taken with the Governor on the Capitol steps. It is also neat to see that many nursing students and nurses coming together for our profession. This year's Legislative Day is January 30, 2014. More information will be coming, and also will be available on GANS website and Facebook page.

March of Dimes By Paula Peppers, Vice-President (EWC)

"Walking together for stronger, healthier babies". - March of Dimes

The March of Dimes mission is to “help moms have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies”.They are leading a national effort to save babies from premature birth by funding research to find the causes and by supporting local programs that offer hope and help to families with a baby in intensive care.

Many of us may have had previous contact in some way with March of Dimes and as nursing students we may be working with some of the babies and their families that the March of Dimes assists during our clinical time in pediatrics. Because we see the impact that prematurity can have on the babies and their families, we as a community will be coming together to support the March of Dimes, the babies, their families, and the research that is so incredibly imperative in helping to get these babies healthy! BANS is putting together a team to support the March of Dimes: March for Babies. The Hall County walk will be on April 19, 2014 at Longwood Park in Gainesville. (Time to be announced). To kick off our group walk and fundraiser, Brenau nursing students now have a team page to help raise money and get updates as they come. The team is open to any Brenau student, faculty and staff. The link to the team page is http://www.marchforbabies.org/team/t2108070 . You can go to the page and click on the ”Join This Team” button to register. Joining the team is free! After you join the team you will have your own page. Donations can be made on this page so please remember to share the link with family and friends!

We are also excited to say that a current Brenau student and her family have been selected to be the Ambassador Family for Hall County! Abigail, who will be two years old in February, was born at just 23 weeks gestation! She is now a happy, healthy toddler who benefitted tremendously from the March of Dimes efforts.

Remember, even if you are unable to make it to the walk, you can help by fundraising and/or donating to the team! We will also be selling Brenau March of Dimes T-Shirts, so be on the lookout for those. If you would like to see what March for Babies is all about, please see the video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P_dFD0J47I or visit http://www.marchforbabies.org. More information will be coming regarding the walk fundraising (along with the website) so please be on the lookout for emails and don’t forget to sign up on the team page. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email myself or any other BANS board member. We hope to see you in April to support the March of Dimes!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Big Thank You Success Thank you to all of those who wrote thank you letters to the military stationed overseas during the holiday season. Together we wrote 50 letters! We all know that it is difficult to be away from family and friends, especially during the holidays. You were able to make a difference in the life of a service member through your letter. Together we can make a difference! P.S. If you happen to receive a response to your letter from a service member, please share it with BANS!

Help Feed a Family this Thanksgiving By Carmen Lorenzen, Community Service Chair

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." - Winston Churchill

Throughout the month of November until December 5th, BANS will be collecting gently used coats for men, women, and children through the organization One Warm Coat. All coats will be donated to Atlanta’s Children’s Shelter. Look for the boxes set up around East Campus with the One Warm Coat logo. Please tell your family and friends so that we can collect as many coats as possible to warm the bodies and hearts of the people at Atlanta’s Children’s Shelter this winter.

In the month of November, we will also be collecting money to provide underprivileged families in the community with a Thanksgiving meal. Please look for the box labeled “Thanksgiving Donations” near the BANS snack shack. The more money we collect this month, the more families we will be able to feed. Thank you so much for your support this holiday season!

If you missed the fun at GANS Convention, plan on attending

NSNA Convention in Nashville on April 9th - April 13th!

Network, Network, Network! By Chuck Ottosen, BTN Director

It’s best to have a strategy in place to make the most of the time available.

Start early on your resume, and have as many people look it over as possible. This is your business card for recruiters.

Create a LinkedIn profile to use after the conference to follow up with the recruiters. They are all on LinkedIn, and it gives you another opportunity to showcase your professional self.

Choose focus sessions related to topics you want to explore further, and introduce yourself to the speaker. They are contacts into that niche area of nursing you’ve always wanted to know more about.

Get to know students from other schools. They represent an important part of your network, and if you keep in touch, they can help you get introduced to employers after graduation.

As a student, networking skills should be part of what you’re learning, and student conventions offer a safe place to practice these skills. If you couldn’t make it this year, don’t miss out next October or better yet, attend NSNA Convention in April in Nashville!

Conventions generally offer fantastic networking opportunities, and the 2013 GANS Convention was no exception. Attendees mixed and mingled with hospital recruiters, graduate school representatives, RNs from many specialties, and other students from around the state. This was the time for us to dress professionally, trade contact information, and pass out resumes. Keep in mind that these people will be our future employers, teachers, and co-workers. This was a chance to make our first impression a good one!

BANS Member General Meeting January 16th at 5 pm Brenau East Campus

We will be discussing upcoming events, BANS' new reward system, bylaws, and much more. Get the chance to talk to other BANS members, win door prizes and just have fun! Pizza, dessert, and drinks will be provided. If you want to be "in the know", plan to attend the meeting and have your voice heard. BANS is here for its members, so take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about your board members and organization. See you there!

1. RUN- Going for a 20-minute run outside releases feel-good endorphins to boost your mood and can help quiet an over-active mind. Try to fit in a quick job after school and before you start studying so that you can hit the books with a clear mind.

2. Perform An Act of Kindness- Sometimes, doing something nice for another person is the best way to get out of your head and stop obsessing about your own problems. If you have a little free time on a Saturday, spend an hour volunteering at a homeless shelter. Doing something for your family can have the same effect.

3. Take A Social Media Break- Spending too much time on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram when exams are looming can only add to your already mounting stress levels. Turn off your social media notifications so that you are not tempted to log on.

4. Listen to Music- Taking a break to listen to your favorite music or putting on classical music can help you chill out.

5. Talk It Out- Don't keep your anxiety bottled up inside. Sit down after dinner with parents or a friend and chat. Talk them through your plan for finals week, tell them what is stressing you out and ask for any advice they might have. Often verbalizing things that are filling our brains with anxiety robs them of their worry inducing power.

I hope these simple tips help relieve some of that finals' anxiety! Remember, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck!
