After completing her role within the Miss USA pageant, Kristen continues to model. She also has become one of the industry’s most successful hair and makeup artists. In 2013 Kristen took charge of a small team that worked backstage doing hair and makeup at Paris Fashion Week. In addition to helping shape the designer’s vision and leading the team toward that goal, Kristen accepted the coveted role of modeling the finale dress to close the show, one of her long held dreams.

I’m Christian Houston and I’m the new publisher of Brentwood Lifestyle. I have an extremely talented 14-year-

old son who makes his mom proud! And I’m grateful to be able to raise him in such a warm and welcoming community with excellent schools.

This has been a lifelong dream of mine to start a publication and to get out into my community to make a difference. After all, that is what this life is supposed to be about, right?

With that said, this is an honor to have a presence in your home and to share the incredible stories each month from around your neighborhood, across town and throughout the area.

Here’s a little about my background.

I attended MTSU where I studied photo journalism and dabbled in aerial photography, shooting out of small Cessnas. I developed my film in a dark room. Some of you may remember film from years gone by! Later, I went to work for global luxury cosmetic lines, and found my passion in helping to bring out the inner beauty and passion in my clients.

I have worked in publishing, marketing and for manufacturers that produce high-end, print production equipment. That was an experience that had a profound influence on me. It taught me the power of print media. It helped me grasp the power of print on so many levels and it became my new passion.

Don’t get me wrong; we live in a digital world and, like you, I rely on my phone, tablet and laptop to get me through the day.

But there will always be a place for print in our world. Personally, I’m in a book club where reading enables me to stay connected with my closest friends. Others may find their print passion in the local library while others prefer a counter at the coffee shop. My point is this: there is a personal quality to holding a printed publication in your hands that a touchscreen cannot match.

My goal is to bring you inspiring and motivating content. Whether it’s for 30 minutes one evening, or a resource you come back to several times a month, we want Brentwood Lifestyle to be a publication you enjoy reading and look forward to receiving.

I am so grateful to have this opportunity. I look forward to meeting you and I invite your feedback and suggestions.

THE TALK OF THE

enriched through participation in the arts,” says Jim Himelrick, a Brentwood Arts Society Board member.

The building belonged to the early African-American community in Brentwood, and the area from Church Street to what is now Cloverland Drive was known as Hardscuffle. According to

the late Vance Little, a Brentwood native and distinguished author and historian, the street got its name from the nature of the terrain over which it passed. After the Civil War, slaves from plantations on Wilson Pike and Franklin Road eventually settled in this area. The next time you’re at the theatre, be sure to notice the historic marker located in the median of Church Street just east of I-65, commemorating the Hardscuffle area.

The Towne Theatre Players began performing here in 2006 and have entertained the community with numerous outstanding shows

When it comes to paying it forward in the Brentwood arts community, no one does it better than the Towne Centre Players.

The Towne Centre Players perform in Brentwood’s historic Towne Centre Theatre. Built in 1885, the building originally was the one-room home of Williamson County Schools, and became the Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in 1905 and later, Brooks Chapel. The theatre is a small, culturally-rich building located at the corner of Church and Frierson Streets, which eventually becomes Brooks Chapel Road. “Standing in the building, it is hard to miss the atmosphere of 132 years of students taught, souls saved and lives

including Oliver, The Wizard of Oz, Footloose, Little Shop of Horrors, The King and I, and Night of January 16th.    The Players will be presenting Souther Hospitality,  March 3-18.  “Our theater strives to continue the tradition of excellence handed down to us from two beloved actresses who are no lon-ger with us - Marianne Clark and Marsha Lewis Bryan," says Himelrick.

Towne Centre Theatre also offers summer theater camps in June and July for ages seven through young adult, performs numerous youth productions throughout the year and has roles for young actors in many of their regular season productions. “As parents of three now-adult children with whom we have acted, sung, danced and played with

- and who are now doing the same with their children - we can honestly say that nothing builds family, friendships and personal growth like early and active engagement in the arts.” says Karen Himelrick.

Towne Centre Theatre is also available for special events such as seminars, luncheons, recitals and receptions. And for those want-ing a few chuckles, Exit Stage Left is Towne Centre Theatre's resident comedy improv troupe. Founded in the spring of 2012, they perform approximately once a month for packed houses. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online or at the door.

With so much talent and fun to offer, it’s no wonder the Towne Centre Theatre is becoming the talk of the town.

Nashville's Ozgener family makes the transition from cigars to fine arts.ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

When you hear the word “Oz,” you can’t help but think of things like

Dorothy, Emerald City and the wizard. But the Ozgener family has given new mean-ing to the word with OZ Arts Nashville, a performance and event center for innovative and contemporary art experiences. It’s no secret that Nashville and the surrounding suburbs are growing by leaps and bounds and that means more art and entertainment outlets are finding their way here, too.

Tim Ozgener, President and CEO of OZ Arts says, "We love Nashville.

Nashville is a friendly and open minded city, open to all types of people with all types of different backgrounds. We are also blessed to have many wonderful arts organizations in town. We are honored to be able to be contributors to this fertile landscape by bringing contemporary arts in multiple disciplines of performing and visual arts to the city and to the region.”

The Ozgener family, founders of CAO Cigars, sold the cigar business in 2007 and adapted their company’s former headquar-ters into the contemporary performance

and event center that OZ is today. “We had inspiration from similar contempo-rary arts centers across the country," says Ozgener. "Particularly, BAM in Brooklyn, Park Avenue Armory, Mass MoCA, PICA in Portland, and Art Basel along with the Miami Design District, where there are a lot of warehouses that have been converted into contemporary arts centers, much like ours. We saw how contemporary arts served as an economic and community development stimulus for those areas and thought, 'why not Nashville?'

There’s No Place Like

“All of this came after we sold our cigar business. Premium cigars  are a 100 per-cent  handmade artisan craft. We applied a lot of color and artistry to our packaging which made our brands stand out. We always like providing a ‘wow’ factor in how we interacted with the consumers, how our cigars tasted, and the packaging. We try to accomplish the same things with the customer experience at OZ Arts.”

It should come as no surprise that the creative arts practically run through the Ozgeners' blood. Tim proudly points out, “We have always loved all kinds of arts. My father is an Armenian from Istanbul  and my mom is from Istanbul as well. My father got his master's at Columbia University and my mother was a Fulbright scholar at Bank Street College. While they were there in New York City as students, they always went to standing room only performances at all kinds of arts venues in Manhattan. So I was fortunate, as a child, to also be exposed to all differ-ent types of performing and visual arts.”

He adds, “In the early 2000's, my father almost died of lymphoma cancer. During that period of time, he had an epiphany through a beautiful lullaby that an Irish nurse sang to him when he felt like he was close to losing his battle --  that the arts can inspire one to want to live. He would later say that when things look bleak and dark and hopeless, one will f ind a spark of light there, and that will be art. He also reconnected with the beauty of the world around us through painting and appreciating the color of the sky, grass, and other aspects of nature. When he told me of this experience, and the desire my parents had to plant the seed money to start something positive as a means to contribute to our city, I was all in.

“The arts stimulate us to consider dif-ferent perspectives. It highlights things that are beautiful and things that are not.  It opens the door for qualities such as empathy, tolerance, and elicits different viewpoints and motivates conversation. We look forward, at OZ Arts, to continue to push the envelope and raise the bar for us as human beings."

LEADING BY EXAMPLEBY FOLLOWING HER

HEART BRENTWOOD ACADEMY'S AVERY BILLINGTON MAKES A DIFFERENCE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN.

To say Avery Billington has a lot going on is an under-statement. The Brentwood Academy senior runs

track, is captain of the girls’ soccer team, is athletic editor of the yearbook and is on the student leadership team, to name just a few activities. Yet, Avery still finds time for the pursuit dearest to her heart: volunteering with special needs children and teens.

Her kinship with special needs children began when Avery was in kindergarten. Her best friend had Down syn-drome. That compassion and love blossomed as Avery got older and began helping with the son of a family friend with special needs.

Today she volunteers at her church accompanying a special needs child to Sunday School as a buddy. She also takes part in rEcess, a monthly night out for parents of children with disabilities and their siblings. In addition, she volunteers with teens and young adults with disabilities as a buddy through Young Life Capernaum, a weekly club where they have dinner, bible study and hang out. CONTINUED >

“Giving them friendship with someone their

age that cares about them, wants to know about their lives, can take them to do stuff

and have a really good relationship that they

can count on, that’s why I show up.”

Inspired By (CONTINUED)

When asked what is most rewarding about her volunteer work, Avery notes, “Just the relationships I’ve built with the kids and their families. They are so fun. Being able to give the young kids a lot of attention, to hear about the day-to-day of the older kids and just sharing in all their lives is super cool.”

How does she fit it all in? Avery says she takes it day-by-day, planning everything out on her weekly calen-dar and then going from there.

It’s an approach that has clearly been successful. Tom Cox, Assistant Coach Boys and Girls Upper School Soccer with Brentwood Academy says, “Avery epitomizes the very qualities we strive to instill. She excels as a student, tak-ing on a vigorous schedule with several honors level classes, and she stands out as a conscientious student who works well with her peers.  As a captain of our girls’ soccer team, she sets a pos-itive tone and exemplifies everything a teammate should be.”

He goes on to say, “Avery’s deep spiritual beliefs are evident both in her kindness to others and in the wise choices she makes as she lives

her life.” And it’s those beliefs that are leading Avery to continue to volunteer in the special needs community beyond high school. Although she hasn’t yet decided on a college major, she plans to stay actively involved in programs for children and teens with disabilities.

Avery hopes she brings as much to these kids as they bring to her, “Giving them friendship with someone their age that cares about them, wants to know about their lives, can take them to do stuff and have a really good rela-tionship that they can count on, that’s why I show up.”

She encourages others to volunteer as well. “Not everyone is comfortable with special needs and I get that. But when you treat them like you do your own friends it’s so cool. In terms of being dif-ferent, they are, but they aren’t. They’re not intimidating. These kids like the same things, want to do the same things and have fun just like you. You just need to be their friend and care about their lives and it makes such a difference.”

That’s a message we should all take to heart and a wisdom that will carry Avery Billington very far in life.

“Giving them friendship with someone their

OUTDOOR FESTIVAL SEASON BEGINS WITH 14TH ANNUAL

MAIN STREET BREWFEST.

ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, comes the Main Street Brewfest! Held in Historic

Downtown Franklin on Saturday, March 11 from 5-8 p.m., Brewfest is the first outdoor festival of the season and is expected to draw a crowd of close to 2,500 people. Last year, Brewfest had moved to May but this year is returning to its St. Patty’s Day roots.

Beerlovers take note: there is a lot of buzz about an exciting new addition to the brew lineup, the Main Street Brewfest Beer, created by Franklin’s own Mantra Artisan

Ales. Mantra partnered with the Downtown Franklin Association to create a neighbor-hood beer specifically in honor of the fes-tival, incorporating  unique regional flavors. Butternut squash and sweet potatoes from Delvin Farms, oak staves from Trubee Honey, Tasmanian pepper-berries, sweet orange peel and cinnamon from Savory Spice Shop all contributed to the rich and savory flavor of the new brew. To top off the distinctive and enjoyable blend, the beer was dry-hopped over real diamonds from Walton’s Antique

and Estate Jewelry! Hence, The Main Street Beer is aptly nicknamed “Meil de Diamant,” which, of course, means “honey diamond.”

In addition, Brewfest has upped the count of exhibiting home brewers. At press time, six home brewers were confirmed, rounding out the count of 80+ craft beers to sample at over 35 tasting sites. Attendees can expect not only the latest local, national and interna-tional brews from an exploding micro-brew-ery market, but live music, Celtic performers, food trucks, merriment and more.

Brewfest Chair, Julie Walton-Garland adds, “Brewfest is always a fun way to kick off the spring. It’s a celebration of everything America’s Favorite Main Street has to offer, from the unique shops to the incredible restaurants. I’m excited to be heading it up this year. We are encouraging people to go ahead and buy tickets early, so they can enjoy the incredible selection of craft beers.”

Sponsors of this highly-anticipated annual event include Lipman Brothers, Homestead Manor, Harpeth True Value Homecenter, Twine Graphics, Ami Marketing, Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant and Boathouse, Walton’s, Signs First, JJ’s Winebar, Landmark Community Bank, Outdoor Classic Structures and Cool Springs Brewery.

Brewfest is the Downtown Franklin Association’s annual fundraiser for the con-tinued revitalization and promotion of the 16-block historic district and will be held rain or shine. Attendees  must have a ticket to participate in the beer tasting, but not to enjoy the festivities. Main Street will be open to all pedestrian traffic, and the restaurants and many shops will be open for business.

Ticket information as well as any updates or

announcements can be found online

CORY BASIL IS MAKING AN IMPRESSION ON FRANKLIN'S THRIVING ART SCENE.ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY SHATERIAN

ExpressionEMBRACING MANY FORMS OF

As an artist, poet, author and actor, Cory Basil is a ‘ jack of all trades’ who defies labels.

If you aren’t familiar with his work, you might recognize his larger-than-life sculpture, Fishboy’s Perilous Putt, on display at the Nashville Sounds’ First Tennessee Park. A collaboration between Basil and local sculptor Brian Somerville, ‘Fishboy’ sits in full view at the eighth hole of the miniature golf course down the right field line

“I had created the temporary sculpture of Fishboy for a retro-spective exhibit of my career back in 2014,” says Basil. “I had gran-diose dreams of making a giant Fishboy sculpture for the event, but we had very little time and very little budget. Brian and I built a massive sculpture out of Styrofoam and wood and canvas and paint and we were up all night, many nights. I had ambitions to find someone to fund finishing him so he could live somewhere permanently in Nashville. I knew it would take $10,000-$15,000 to finish him so he could live outside. CONTINUED >

Somerville had some space in the woods behind his house where Fishboy was stored. Basil tried for two years to secure funding to finish the project but he was unsuccessful until February last year. “It was a ‘who-would-have-thought?’ moment,” says Basil. “I’m very excited that he’s there and he can inspire and make kids smile. It’s cool to see kids walk up to him and climb on him.”

Basil made the move to the Nashville area from his hometown of Phoenix in 2007 to pursue his dream of becoming a singer/song-writer. “I was in a band as a teenager and just wanted to be the cool rock star,” he says.

He had transitioned out of an insular life of a stifling, cult-like religion, survived a divorce and found Nashville to be a liberating place where his creative side could blossom. He subsequently fell into a publishing deal, and didn’t really think about pursuing his art until encouraged to do so by a friend in 2011.

“She’d seen me post my work on various social media over the years and she chal-lenged me to show publically,” he says. “She set me up with a show at Ugly Mugs in East Nashville and I accepted the challenge.”

Basil put together a 35-piece collection of framed illustrations. Much to his surprise, he

sold more than half the images when the show opened on a snowy winter night and it inspired him to do more shows. He went from coffee shops and restaurants, to galleries and pop-up nights to opening his own gallery, Imaginebox Emporium, in downtown Franklin.

The 39-year-old finds his inspiration every-where and by just about everything he encoun-ters – be it a simple moment in time, the beauty of a view, an old romance, history, music, etc.

He doesn’t discriminate about what lights his creative soul on fire. He found his inspiration for Eternal Embrace from the ‘Lovers of Valdaro,’ a pair of human skeletons dating back almost 6,000 years, which were discovered by archaeologists in Italy in 2007. The two skeletons appear to have died facing each other with their arms around each other, bringing to mind a lovers embrace.

“This was very inspirational to me,” says Basil. “We put so much effort here on Earth with love, with our families, with relationships, marriage, significant others. Essentially, we build every-thing on love. For me, I’ve always questioned what

becomes of us after this. And right along-side that is what becomes of love after this? All the time, effort and energy and spiritual emphasis on connection – what happens to that as soon as we expire?

“And those questions just dove off the page at me when I saw this photograph of the couple embracing. So with that, I created an entire series based around that question – ‘what is love and what happens to it when our time here on Earth is up?’”

You can check out Basil’s extensive scope of

Parting Thoughts

ARTICLE LINDA DOHSE | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS PHILLIPS

Scott Phillips, standing, watches as Mary Cameron McFarlane tutors Marjorie Suber on the iPad's finer points.

THE “FIX” IS IN

There was no large scale celebration when Scott Phillips opened his technology

repair shop in the Marketplace at Maryland Farms. Instead, the opening presented an opportunity to give back to his community in a generous and heartfelt way: by presenting iPads, Otterbox cases and accessories to the Brentwood YMCA preschool.

Phillips and his wife, Chris, came to know the school all too well during the summer of 2009 when Scott was recover-ing from surgery to remove a large brain tumor. During his extended hospitalization and rehabilitation, the preschool welcomed their son William, who was three at the time, with open arms - giving him a place to play, learn and grow. (Their second child, Charlie, was born in 2011 and attended the YMCA preschool as well.)

"It was an honor to be able to give back to an organization that has become like family to us over the past 10 years," says Phillips. "Tracey Jernigan and her incredible staff loved, nurtured and readied our two boys for elementary school while instilling in them the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. We are eternally grateful for the excellent start the YMCA

preschool has given our children."

Chris Phillips says the Brentwood YMCA preschool was a refuge for their fam-ily during dark times. "I was able to devote the time I needed to help my husband recover while knowing our sons were safe, happy and well cared for.”

Last year, Phillips donated an iPad to Generations Connected, a  newly formed club at Ravenwood High School. Phillips and the club’s founder, Ravenwood senior Mary Cameron McFarlane, then presented the tablet  to Marjorie Suber, an assisted living resident at Morning Pointe of Brentwood.

“I started Generations Connected because I saw how rewarding it has been for my grandparents to get connected to relatives through the Internet,” she says. “I wanted to share this with other seniors in our commu-nity and I’m so thankful for Scott’s donation. It’s fascinating to hear stories from senior cit-izens about connecting people my age with people like Marjorie.”

Members of the club visit Morning Pointe weekly and help Marjorie and other residents learn how to use their devices and become connected to friends and family through technology. Phillips is also working with local schools, businesses and hospitals to develop discount programs and business accounts.

Phillips is a franchisee of  UBREAKIFIX, a chain that specializes in repairs for electronic devices like computers, smartphones, tablets, game consoles and “pretty much anything else with a power button,” says Phillips. Last month he opened a second location at 2222 Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro.

UBREAKIFIX is located at 101 Creekside Cross-

ing. For more information, call 615.436.3499 or
