The Art of the Short Story -A Behind the Scenes Look

Nearly 30 people turned out on a beautifulOctober Saturday to hear Stevan Allred, author of "ASimplified Map of the Real World: The RenataStories." He read one of the fifteen linked stories inthe collection, drawing on his community theaterexperience to bring the story alive. He also talkedabout growing up on a farm in Beaverton, and howhis understanding of rural communities enriches hischaracters and stories. A name on the side of apassing truck, for example, suggested an interestingfictional character, which led to imagining arelationship with a wife and conflict with a neighbor.

Conversations on fiction and the creative processcontinued during the book signing. The Friends thankStevan for returning to his hometown to provide aninteresting program and discussion.
