INVOCATION

P: We gather in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

LITANY OF PRAISE (Psalm 127 & 113 Selected Verses)

P: Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.

C: Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.

P: In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—

C: For he grants sleep to those he loves.

P: Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.

C: Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth.

P: Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.

C: They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

P: [The LORD] raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap;

C: he seats them with princes, with the princes of their people.

P: He settles the barren woman in her home

C: as a happy mother of children.

ALL: Praise the LORD.

SONG OF PRAISE: #610 Now Thank We All Our Lord (vs. 1)

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, on this day we thank you for your gifts of life and love given us through our mothers. Bless all Christian homes where your peo-ple dwell with faith, knowledge, virtue, patience, and godliness. Bind together hus-bands and wives and parents and children with ties of mutual affection and respect; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

MEDITATION THEME: A Mother’s Care

TEXT: Exodus 2:1-10

Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became preg-nant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” “Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother. Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

READING RESPONSE: #506 Oh, Blest the House, Whate’er Befall (vs. 2, 4)

: Oh, blest that house where faith you find And all with in have set their mind To trust their God and serve him still And do in all hos holy will.

Blest such a house; it prospers well. In peace and joy the parents dwell, And in their children’s lives is shown How richly God can bless his own.

MEDITATION THEME: A Legacy Of Faith

TEXT: 2 Timothy 1:3-7

I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

READING RESPONSE: #506 Oh, Blest the House, Whate’er Befall (vs. 1, 3, 5)

: Oh, blest the house, whate’er befall, Where Jesus Christ is all in all! A home that is not wholy his– How sad and poor and dark it is!

Oh, blest the parents who give heed Unto their children’s foremost need. And weary not of care or cost. May none to them and heav’n be lost!

Then here will I and mine today A solemn promise make and say: Though all the world forsake his Word, I and my house will serve the Lord! MEDITATION THEME: Moms Are Worth More Than Rubies

TEXT: Proverbs 31:10-31

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for

her servant girls. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in

scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders

of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idle-

ness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to

be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city

gate.

THE APOSTLES' CREED (all say)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cruci-fied, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life ever-lasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Dear Heavenly Father, you created Adam and Eve for each other and gave them the gift of children. We praise you for the countless blessings we enjoy through our families: love, belonging, safety, support, guidance, shelter, food, clothing, educa-tion, and most of all the opportunity to build one another up in the true and saving faith in Jesus.

We remember with sorrow our anger, grudges, disobedience, harsh words, disre-spect, and ungratefulness towards the members of our families and beg your mercy for Jesus’ sake. Restore us to one another and fill our homes with forgiveness, pa-tience, understanding, love, and joy.

Gracious God, on this Mother’s Day we thank you especially for our mothers who carried us into this life, helped us, and shaped us along the way. Give them a spe-cial measure of your strength and wisdom to work together with their husbands in the high and holy responsibility of bringing up children in the Lord. For all the sac-rifice, care, and devotion of mothers, may the calling of motherhood be greatly es-teemed, honored, and praised by husbands and children alike.

We thank you precious Father, for making us members of your family of believers through Baptism. Help us to live as your faithful and obedient children, secure in Christ’s love, until we are finally united together with all the saints in our heavenly home. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen. LORD'S PRAYER (all pray)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
