    OPPORTUNITIES FOR POST-GRADUATE STUDIES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT

    Purpose of the programmeThe Bridging Programme in Finance is aimed at individuals who wish to enter one of three honours programmes offered by the Department of Finance and Investment Management. The three programmes are:

    • BComHonours(FinancialPlanning)

    • BComHonours(InvestmentManagement)

    • BComHonours(PropertyValuationandManagement)

    The programme is comprised of a broad-based curriculum to prepare students for a demanding curriculum part of the honours programmes. The curriculum includes nine topic areas ranging from business mathematics to portfolio management to fi nancial planning to fi xed property.

    The programme emphasises application, analysis and evaluation within each topic area as well as the application of integrity and ethics in a professional environment.

    Rules of accessA student in possession of any Bachelor’s Degree, related BTech degree or a related National Diploma

    Students are required to have at least grade 12 mathematics with a minimum APSscoreof4(notMathematicalLiteracy)intheNSCoraSeniorCertifi cate with a minimum D-symbol for SG Mathematics. Students with an APS score for Mathematics below 4, SG Mathematics below a D or Mathematical Literacy will only be considered after completion of the Mathematics for Diploma students offered by the Faculty of Science at the University of Johannesburg to all second and third year Diploma students interested in pursuing further studies at the University.

    Closing date for applicationsThe closing date is 31 August 2015 annuallyforforeign(i.e.non-SouthAfricanresident)studentsandthelast Friday of October annually for South African resident students for study in the following academic year.   • CurriculumThe Bridging Programme in Finance is presented on a full-time basis over one year and on a part-time basis over two years. Students can elect to complete the programme on either a full-time or a part-time basis. All lectures are only presented in the evenings, usually on a Tuesday and Wednesday from 18:00 – 21:15 in the first and second semester. Students have to pass all nine modules independently to be considered for one of the three BCom Honours degrees.

  • Language MediumLectures are presented in English. Students may however feel free to participate in the class discussions ineitherAfrikaansorEnglish.Allassessment papers are compiled in English only, but may be answered in eitherEnglishorAfrikaans.Similarly,tutorials and research papers may be completed in either of the two languages.

    Lectures and programmeLectures will be presented by full-time academics and occasional guest lecturers. Accepted students are expected to attend lectures regularly and an attendance register may be takenateachclass.Theprogrammeis not suitable for distance learning or correspondence students.

    Lectures will start early February 2016. Accepted students will be supplied with a detailed programme and timetable when they receive their acceptance letters via email.

    AssessmentStudents will complete a number of assessments throughout the duration of each module. Assessments may taketheformofwrittenassessmentopportunities(i.e.tests),aswellasclass assessments, assignments and/or projects.

    A last assessment opportunity in the form of an examination will be completed at the end of each module.

    Academic regulationsAssessment activities such as writtenassessments(i.e.tests),classassessments, assignments, and/or projects will constitute the module mark,asoutlinedabove.

    All students are required to obtain amodulemarkofatleast40%andabove to gain entrance to write the last assessment opportunity. Students that donotobtainamodulemarkof40%and above, will not be allowed to write the last assessment opportunity.

    Asub-minimumof40%isrequiredinthe last assessment opportunity, while afinalmarkforeachmoduleof50%or above must be achieved to pass a module.

  • Prescribed materialTheprescribedtextbookforeachmodule will be communicated to accepted students in December 2015. Theprescribedtextbookisbynomeans sufficient to pass each specific module. Various sources of information will have to be combined to pass each module, i.e. formal lectures, class discussions,theInternet(includingEdulink)andyourownresearch.

    The use of financial and management magazines including Financial Management(CIMA),BusinessWeekand Fortune have proven to be of great value in the past. Local financial magazinessuchasFinanceWeekand Financial Mail offer rich sources of information on issues relating to financial management and should form an essential part of any current or aspiringfinancialmanager’stoolkit.

    Application proceduresAs mentioned previously, the closing date for applications is 31 August 2015forforeign(i.e.non-SouthAfricanresident)studentsandlastFridayinOctober for South African resident students. The selection process willtakeplaceduringOctoberand

    November 2015 and students will be advised of the outcome by the second Friday in December 2015.

    Theapplicationprocessfor2016intakewill be a two stage process. Firstly, each student will have to complete the electronic departmental application formontheweb(aswellassubmitelectronicdocuments)andsecondly,submit a completed application form (includingallnecessarydocumentswhich are stated below as well as on theapplicationform)atthestudentenrolment centre on the APK campus or via the UJ online application process. Students must comply with both application processes in order to be considered for the class of 2016.

    All prospective students that wish to apply to study the Bridging Programme in Finance MUST submit the following documents before the above deadlines:

    • UJApplicationform(ifitisyourfirstapplicationtoUJ);

    • Passportphoto

    • Certifiedcopyofidentitydocument(orpassportifforeignstudent);

  • • Certifiedcopyofyour Grade12(matric)certificate;

    • Certifiedcopyofyourdegreecertificate(ifyouhavealreadycompleted your undergra- duatedegree);

    • Certifiedcopyofanofficialacademic record and certificate of conduct issued by your undergraduate university. The academic record and certificate of conduct submitted MUST include allcoursestakenbyaprospectivestudent(i.e.notonlyalistofcoursespassed).Failuretosubmitafulllistofcoursestakenmaydisqualifyaprospectivestudent;and

    • SAQAevaluationscertificateifyourhighest academic qualification was not obtained at a South African university;

    Selection processProspective students that have not studied at the University of Johannesburg previously should also complete a University of Johannesburg application form and pay the non-refundable 2016 application. This fee is required to obtain a student number and process your application.

    Failure to submit all the required documentation or submitting your application late may result in your application not being considered for the Bridging Programme in Finance.

    All prospective students will be subjected to a selection process.

    Registration and feesRegistration details for the 2016 BCom Honours(InvestmentManagement)programme will be communicated to accepted students in early December 2015(bycloseofbusinessonthesecondFridayinDecember).Pleasedo not contact the department regarding your application before that date. A registration deposit must normally be paid in early January each year. The exact cost of the BCom Honours(InvestmentManagement)programme will be advised in January 2016.
