PROJECT NOTE FILE

General The Bridge Notes program is a Windows program that creates a Project Note File that can be included directly into a MicroStation DGN file. The Bridge Notes program helps to standardize and automate the process of including the applicable bridge notes into the bridge plans. The program utilizes a three step process (as documented below) for allowing user to automate process of creating the Bridge Plans General Notes text. The process involves the user selecting the standard notes to be included, modifying the notes as needed with a standard text editor, and then creating a formatted text file to be included directly into the MicroStation DGN file. MicroStation key-in commands are automatically placed in the text file to ensure text symbology and formatting adhere to Bridge Design standards when imported into the MicroStation DGN file. The resulting text file will also include key-in commands that will create logical graphic groups to allow for text to be manipulated as blocks in MicroStation.

Creating the Input file (.INP) The input file is a standard text file that contains the selected standard notes with the applicable formatting commands and MicroStation key-in commands. The standard notes are copied from the master standard note files that are installed with the application.

1. Enter project data and select the applicable units.

2. Select the individual notes to be included in the input file (.INP) from the three available tabs.

3. Click the Save button on the toolbar or select Save Note Input File on the pull-down menu to create and view the input file.

Editing the Input File (.INP) Some standard notes may need to be modified to reflect specific project conditions and design values. These modifications can be made in any standard text editor outside of the Bridge Notes program or the user may open the input file directly from the Bridge Notes program by following below procedure:

1. Click the Open Input File button on the toolbar or select Open Input File on the pull-down menu to open the input file in the EditPad text editor application.

2. Upon completion of editing the input file ensure that the changes are saved and then exit the EditPad text editor application.

The user may modify formatting statements and MicroStation key-in lines as needed. When modifying format statements it is important to follow specific guidelines governing the usage of format statements (see section “Using Format Statements” located at end of help document). Also, see section “Using MicroStation Key-In Commands” for documentation concerning the correct usage of key-in commands in input (.INP) files.

Processing the Input File (.INP) Once all revisions have been made to the input file (.INP) the user may process the file and create the output text file (.TXT). The output text file contains the standard notes with the required MicroStation key-in commands and may be included directly into a MicroStation DGN file.

1. Select the Process button on the toolbar or Process Input File on the pull-down menu to

process the input file (.INP) and create the output text file (.TXT). The resulting output text file should be automatically displayed in the text editor.

Placing the Formatted Text File (.TXT) The GDOT Bridge Customization of MicroStation has a cell and user command to place the note file on a sheet.

1. Place a sheet cell, BORD, in a file. a. The sheet must remain a 23" x 35" sheet. b. Do not scale the sheet to a 1 to 1 scale.

2. Using E GEN User Command, a. type in the path and the file name – g:\fred.txt b. hit the <Enter> key c. place a data point in the drawing file near the sheet where the notes will be placed

3. Fence and move the notes onto the sheet. The layout of the notes on the sheet should be as follows:

4. Centered at the top of each type of note is the note title using 3/16" text that is underlined.

BRIDGE SYMBOLS AND FONTS All notes shall be written using capital letters. If a Bridge Symbol is needed, it is accessed by using a lowercase letter or symbol. The Office of Bridge and Structural Design's Customization of MicroStation User Command for placement of notes will: • select the correct font; Font 49 is

o used for the General Notes Sheet o an equally spaced font.

• convert the symbols and lowercase letters to Bridge Symbols. The following are Bridge Symbols available.

Font 49 For example, a lowercase z will access the Bridge Symbol s/2.

Other Bridge Symbols The following Bridge Symbols are available with Font 48.

Symbol ^ (Shift 6) will access the Bridge Symbol °, degree symbol. Symbol ` will access the Bridge Symbol for the left quote mark

FORMATTING

Using Format Statements Format statements are included in the input file (.INP) in order to properly process and format the associated text to be included in the output text file (.TXT). All format statements must be encased in brackets as follows:

[format statement]

All format statements can not have any associated text on the same line as the format statement with the exception of the [CENTER] format statement. The allowable format statements are as follows: [WORD WRAP] Text located between [WORD WRAP] and [END WORD

WRAP] statements will be “wrapped” such that left and right margins of text block will be aligned vertically.

[END WORD WRAP] Terminates [WORD WRAP] function. [LITERAL] Text located between [LITERAL] and [END LITERAL]

statements will be included in output text file (.TXT) exactly as it appears in input file (.INP).

[END LITERAL] Terminates [LITERAL] function. [CENTER] Text located on same line as [CENTER] statement will be

centered between left and right margins. [SPACE] Inserts one blank line in output text file. WORD WRAP PROPERTIES [INDENT FIRST LINE = value] Sets value for indent width of first line of text in WORD

WRAP block of text (allowable values = 0-20). [INDENT BODY = value] Sets value of indent width for all lines of text subsequent to

first line of text in WORD WRAP block of text (allowable values = 0-20).

[LINE SPACING = value] Sets line spacing value for text in WORD WRAP block of text (allowable values = 1 or 2).

[LEFT MARGIN = value] Sets value for left margin. Applies to WORD WRAP and CENTER functions (allowable values = 1-20).

[RIGHT MARGIN = value] Sets value for right margin. Applies to WORD WRAP and CENTER functions (allowable values = 40-150).

The following restrictions govern the proper use of format statements:

1. Each [LITERAL] statement must have an associated [END LITERAL] statement.

2. Each [WORD WRAP] statement must have an associated [END WORD WRAP] statement.

3. The WORD WRAP property statements shown in table above must be used “outside” of a [LITERAL]/[END LITERAL] pair or [WORD WRAP]/[END WORD WRAP] pair.

4. The [CENTER] and [SPACE] property statements must be used “outside” of a [LITERAL]/[END LITERAL] pair or [WORD WRAP]/[END WORD WRAP] pair.

Using MicroStation Key-In Commands The input file (.INP) contains MicroStation key-in commands that will be exported to the resulting output text file (.TXT). Upon importing the text file into the MicroStation DGN file, the MicroStation key-in commands embedded in the text file will be executed. Including the required MicroStation key-in commands in the text file ensures that the text will be included with the proper symbology and text attribute parameters. The resulting text in MicroStation will also be arranged into graphic groups allowing for easy manipulations of logical “blocks” of text. All MicroStation key-in commands included in the input file (.INP) should be located “outside” of any [LITERAL]/[END LITERAL] or [WORD WRAP]/[END WORD WRAP] pairs of formatting statements.
