What are the chances that I would know someone where we went? We sat down in the restaurant next to Pat Keady’s parents. Pat was a director of Ignite Youth and is currently the moderator of the Emman- uel Community in Brisbane. I booked Pat last year for the Parish Leaders conference in Kincum- ber. So that was an unexpected connection and surprise. You won’t be surprised that I got talking to them. However, there were two other groups in the restaurant that I knew from their holidays in Forster Tuncurry. We live in an amazingly small world don’t you think – the Catholic part so well connected. I wonder what the other guests at dinner thought as chatter went from table to table. One of the benefits of a few days leave is the opportunity to catch up on those ‘must see’ movies. ‘Secret Life of Pets 2’ is on the list, although I have to travel north to Brisbane to my little nieces to see that one. I did see this week though ‘Rocketman’, the life story of Elton John. As a movie it is not for the faint hearted as the language is somewhat colourful. When he was off the rails, he was right off the rails – so keep that in mind should you go. What a sad childhood he had though. His mum says to him at one point ‘you’ll never be loved properly’. It was a very confronting part of the movie. No one deserves to hear such words. Sometimes we say things in simple ways (jokes, humour, judgements, for the best and worst of intentions) that exclude, demean, hurt, de- flate, undermine and we shouldn’t. I also had the opportunity to attend a ‘Spirituality in the Pub’ here in Dubbo. Here it is simply a Parish event that is held 3 times a year with guest speakers, a Q & A session and quite a bit of conviviality between members of the Parish. This one had a small response apparently – only 45 people. The two people who presented were inspirational in the work and lives they have. One has been a professional basketballer whose life has been guided by faith, and the other a young person, donating holidays to supporting refugees across the world, whose faith has informed his outreach. I was impressed with the process! The topic ‘Life Choices’ was perfect. My question to you is: could that work here in Forster Tuncurry? We would need a small committee and a pub. Tonight (Thursday) I have been invited to the 2nd Thursday of the month Parish dinner: ‘chicken and champagne’ with about 90 people signed up for dinner. Normally 130 attend, so it was a bit light on tonight. It is a very simple format with good conversation etc and goes for about 2 hours. The night costs $10 ahead and that includes drinks. I think our hall would lend itself to this initi- ative as well. What do you think? Any thoughts or volunteers who might to lead it? I love checking out other parishes. We have so much happening in our community and we know so much happens right across the church. It is great checking out the initiatives of others and ‘borrowing’ their ideas! I love it. So many wonderful and simple ways for us to come together as a community. If you are away and at Mass could you pick up the parish newsletter and bring it back for me. They are so full of ideas. Dear Parish Family,

My first night in Dubbo my mate Fr Greg Kennedy and I went out for dinner. What are the chances that I would know someone where we went? We sat down in the restaurant next to Pat Keady’s parents. Pat was a director of Ignite Youth and is currently the moderator of the Emman-uel Community in Brisbane. I booked Pat last year for the Parish Leaders conference in Kincum-ber. So that was an unexpected connection and surprise. You won’t be surprised that I got talking to them. Refugee Week – Sunday 16 to Saturday 22 June 2019

Global migration is a major challenge for much of today’s world and a priority for the Catholic Church. In words and deeds, Pope Francis repeatedly shows his deep compassion for all who are displaced. Witness his encounters with migrants and refugees on the Islands of Lampedusa and Lesbos. Witness his call for their full embrace: to wel-come, to protect, to promote, and to integrate migrants, refugees and vic-

tims of human trafficking.

The theme for Refugee Week is A World of Stories and World Refugee Day is on Thursday 20 June 2019. In a spirit of social justice the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Of-fice and Great Lakes Rural Australians for Refugees invite members of the community to think about their own story and the stories of others who have experienced the challenges of d i s p l a c e m e n t a n d m i g r a -tion. Awareness of peace, justice and human rights inspires change in com-

munities and hope for refugees.
